Buying My First Engine Driven Welder

  • The reason for this purchase is the electric line from the barn to the other barn where I work is on its last legs. It won't run my 110v welder anymore without blowing the breaker. This is not a purchase I was looking forward to making but I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. That's life I guess.
I still plan on keeping the other 3 welders I have and when the day comes I get my own shop, they will live in there. They are still needed when I get tired of listening to this gigantic noisy welder.
    Thanks for watching!!!

Nice machine it will be a game changer around the farm. Welding cables generally don't get soldered because the cables can get very hot during heavy use. Normally hammer lugs are used. And that old tweco ground clamp is the best clamp in the biz. Sure they are a little awkward but they last forever and transfer current very well. Those stamped metal ground clamps are easy to use at the start but they don't last worth a crap. Sweet machine you will love it.

I bought one just like that a month ago, it is in like new condition. The starter has some issues but the engine runs fine, and it welds. Mine is a model 8347, built in November of 1988. Your model number, 8297, is also listed as being produced in November of '88

when you build the trailer for that welder you can use two small car wheels to coil your leads.

That's I think was made in the mid 70s the ground clamp that was on the old cable is a better choice the new one you like after a while it doesn't work too good but you got a very good welder though there's a lot you can do with

A couple of ideas for you. When you buy more protective sleeve, get enough that you could make jumper cables from the old cable. Another thing that you could do for a welding cart is use an old riding mower, take the rear out and make a new axle for the back to match the front so that you steer it and use it in level ground. Remove everything from the frame including the fenders and leave the frame bare. If you can turn the front axle around, you probably could make it operate like a wagon.

you should build a trailer to tow it behind the truck. if its a simple trailer with axles bolted to the welder no tags will likely be required since its a piece of equipment and not merely a utility trailer. at least here in Va we dont have to have tags on welders that are towed. just working lights.

Little advice, zip tie the cable on the ground clamp , and make cable rack on the trailer/cart you'll make.
If it was mine I would have probably upgraded it to Dinse quick connectors

contact Lincoln electric and they will send you the shop manual and owners manual for that machine. they can also tell you the year it was manufactured. I did that with my SA250 lincoln machine. its a DC only machine I use it for stick and scratch start tig. it has the control for a wire feeder but I dont have a spool gun for it yet.
