The dirty secret they're not telling you is that heavy rust requires mechanical abrasion first, and sometimes even after laser cleaning. The plasma produced by the laser converts the surface of heavier rust into an unknown grey material (carbon probably), but if you scrape it mechanically, you'll find rust underneath. I know this first hand.
Indeed, heavy layers of rust - unlike those shown in the video - require a bit more attention. Unfortunately, at this stage, oxides have pitted the surface and are now integrated into it. Initially, it is best to use a wire brush or a similar tool to gently scrape away the rust flakes. These heavy-rust cases would then require applying two types of lasers: a high-power CW laser and a low-power pulsed laser. It’s the latter that would remove the layer you call “grey material” - essentially, it contains a mix of rust and the substrate material. It is best to address rust at its earliest appearance to maintain the integrity of the part. Regular maintenance can prevent minor rust from becoming a major problem. Thank you for your input, @DreamKalibur!
So let's say we used this in a bridge maintenance type application (Girders and bearings). What would the process be like? I'm an Ironworker that's done minor bridge maintenance. We use a neumatic chipping gun to hit the rust off and repaint. Would this tool be a more effective or less effective way of doing that?
The first pass seemed perfect and smooth, then the second pass gave a rough finish. Why did they do that? And how hot does the lazer make the steel? Could it be used on thinner steel or sheet metal? Probably not.
honestly, you can do sheet metal with those. watch out for galvanized steel... those fumes are lethal. just in case, drink lots of milk when working with galvanized...
@johnnieguitar5724 - It was the speed difference between the two passes. At one point you see the laser pattern on the surface under the metal being worked on. Slower pass means more time to more time to burn the surface more thoroughly.
What the size of the rust plate in the video. And what is the cleaning speed of your 2000W rust laset cleaning? How large area can it clean per minute.
I believe the rust plate was approximately 3 foot by 2 foot. But it depends what you are removing and what you are removing it from. I have seen light powder coat removal in seconds, and also seen thick putty paint take a 2-3 minutes. Check out this video ruclips.net/video/pbfFU_4aHwI/видео.html all of our videos are timed stamped should be able to calculate a cleaning per minute with your specific application. I'm sensing that the liability issues may be prohibitive. There is a growing movement to use things like dry ice blasting, but this seems to be way more controllable, faster and cleaner. Thanks.
