Ohhhhh so you’re one of those people that wants to tell everyone a song is a cover, but you know it comes off like a douche to just come out and say it directly. So you do it in a passive way. Nice.
David Gray has devastated me ever since I first laid my ears on him. It was 1998 and I was 18 years old. I was an emotional wreck, and I still am in many ways to this day. I had heard Babylon 1&2 on the radio. I'd just received a free trial of Comcast cable, they had a music streaming channel that just played random songs. I'd just put on the Folk channel, and it played some various Folk heroes Dylan, Donaven, and so forth. Well, David Gray came on and his Babylon 1&2 came on back to back. I thought to myself, "Ooh, I know this guy and these songs, I've heard them before." Then, Say Hello, Wave Goodbye played, and in that moment, I was just utterly devastated. I mean, I was destroyed at this man's talents. I've never looked back since. The next day, I went out and purchased every David Gray album available at that time. I've never looked back since. I have three wishes/dreams in this life: to see David Gray live (more than once), to meet him in person, and to tell him in person that his music has saved my life multiple times, and changed my life!
White Ladder - memories of my 2 year old son dancing in the den and listening to this wonderful album. Some of the best memories of my life. Thanks David Gray!
100% agree, although I did like Ed Sheeran way back when + and X came out. Ever since Shape Of You came out though, I’ve kept David Gray as my fav singer songwriter. Ungodly Underrated musician.
I watched Ed at TITP around 2016, just him and loop pedal. Boring. He’s too good. He can right great songs for other artists. Not the best singer. Lewis Capaldi a worse singer. David is a rounded songsmith and musician. His drummer is a icon. Unknown to this TikTok generation. ✌🏻 A song written about ladies of the night.
I was 13 when White Ladder was released. Shaped my later teen years and has been the soundtrack to most of my life since. This has always been my favourite track on the album and it sounds as good today as it did all those years ago!
Met David Gray on the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne, this must have being 2008/2009 we stopped for a chat after I commented on how cool his jacket was, a very friendly and lovely man.
It’s not often that a cover of a popular song in a different genre succeeds as well as this sublime version. David Gray has taken the bitter and bitchy original by Marc Boland to another dimension altogether. The lyrics are still just as cutting but wrapped up in a devastating regret and sadness, especially the section at the end of the album version, ‘we were born before the wind, who are we to understand’ ❤
I never knew this was a cover. I always thought this was his original work. Which makes it weird when I just went and listened to it. It has a Depeche Mode and Human League feel to it. Completely different vibe. I like it.
As a singer, song writer he is up there with the greats, but so over looked is just how great a guitarist he is He could step on any stage alone with a mic and his acoustic guitar and still sound amazing with no backup Not many musicians can do that. That's part of his brilliance.
Thank you lol .......I had pink floyd playing the other day & my 18 year old son popped his head through the door & asked who it was playing ......my work as a parent is complete ✌🏻
Saw this man live in Sheffield, what a voice and what a night, great performer with some beautiful songs. Lyrics to this years love is on our bedroom wall ❤️ Thank you for the moments, David ✊
This song is pure genius. He is so enormously gifted in myriad ways. We're so fortunate to be alive to hear his poignant and beautiful music. Thank you, David Gray, and thank you, Virgin Radio UK for posting!
Went to the white ladder tour first time round, can’t wait to see him again. Was only 15 that time, great to enjoy his music as an adult. Love this cover.
One of the best songs ever written... Thanks Softcell❤

@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 yes I am the one who always knows everything better and makes himself important

This is incredible, David Gray is a better performer than Ed Sheeran, more emotion in his voice.
100% agree, although I did like Ed Sheeran way back when + and X came out. Ever since Shape Of You came out though, I’ve kept David Gray as my fav singer songwriter. Ungodly Underrated musician.
david is in a completely different league altogether
💯% there is no comparison between David Gray and Ed Sheeran.
Can’t compare him to any of those 🤣
I watched Ed at TITP around 2016, just him and loop pedal. Boring. He’s too good. He can right great songs for other artists. Not the best singer. Lewis Capaldi a worse singer. There’s something about his voice (and his rendition of this song) that kind of just breaks your heart, isn’t there?
Very melancholy.
Exactly
True.
Holy krap I'm a 53 year old man in tears at this but I have seen alot of life's ups & downs
45yo woman. Same crying like a baby, so many hello and goodbyes
To this day the best cover version I’ve ever heard ……..👏👏👏👏👏
Amen x
You are so right my friend, this is a fantastic version of this song, and I loved the soft cell version, but this beats it hands down.
The best no questions asked 👌
Big time. This is a hell of a song by a hell of a performer.
IMO, better than original.
David gray is the fucking man, start to finish, your’ll never get a better smoother more genuine voice than this man right here
I was 13 when White Ladder was released. Shaped my later teen years and has been the soundtrack to most of my life since. This has always been my favourite track on the album and it sounds as good today as it did all those years ago!
A Soft Cell song originally x
@@adamski101 but a better version than soft cell
I doubt David agrees
@@adamski101 About ladies of the night
same .
My son inalaw died in September 23, this was one of last songs he played. He was a massive fam, I miss him dearly.
That’s awful my condolences please 🙏
It’s always good to to have a beautiful song attached to a beautiful soul and memories
May he rest in peace and peace to you aswell .... beautiful song to have as a memory
So sorry for your loss 💙
His drummer is an icon that most kids of TikTok don’t know. Legend ✌🏻
Who is it?
Clune
Craig McClune aka Clune ... 🥁
I dont usually love covers as much as the original but his voice suits this song so well!
His voice is perfect for this song
So good to see David is still doing it, and despite looking older (as we all do now) that his voice is still as smooth as silk as it always was
Met David Gray on the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne, this must have being 2008/2009 we stopped for a chat after I commented on how cool his jacket was, a very friendly and lovely man.
Fantastic must have been a great experience ☺️
Just can’t sing absolutely shit singer very dark very depressing.
What a flawless live performance!
This is far better than most auto-tuned album recordings for most modern artists.

original is Marc Almond (soft cell) not Marc Bolan (T-Rex)

@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 David Gray completely reinvented the song, they’re so different - I’d add a Pet Shop Boys esque dynamic too I too
We were born before the wind is an allusion to the Van Morrison lyric
Come on! Marc Almond ... not Marc Boland! And in any case it’s Bolan, not Boland!
As a singer, song writer he is up there with the greats, but so over looked is just how great a guitarist he is He could step on any stage alone with a mic and his acoustic guitar and still sound amazing with no backup Not many musicians can do that.
That's part of his brilliance.
Saw him right at the start with Babylon and last time was last year ‘22 , still amazing, moving and brilliant as ever.
Pure class lets all wave🫶with thanks❤
I'm crying it's so beautiful 😢
Clune! He is essential to the sound… a master on the kit. Seeing these gentlemen together again gives me hope.
Would love another upbeat ( maybe white ladder 2 ) with these three guys ! Good joyful music is hard to come by but these guys do it very well
Absolutely 100%
Clune…….god isn’t he good. The prime drummer of David Gray forever. One of my fav drummers growing up.
@@Joelster-og4pf I agree, Clune is a human metronome!
Always been my favourite cover of this song. 🎶
This song is beautiful piece. I have a moment that connects me well. I parted a love in Sacramento. Both of us had tears flowing.
I did ho visit again. We stayed friends. Though we always said Hello and Waved Goodbye.
My desert island save disc. Emotional performance.
Bigup to Mark Almond for writing this!
His full version of this song is the stuff of legend in folk.
Just found this wow took me back in time what a great album and performer a whole suitcase full of emotions attached to this song amazing!
Just awesome 🤩 soft cell classic 80’s anthem
So happy to see Clune on drums again with David
Children......this is what real music sounds like!......the end!
Thank you lol .......I had pink floyd playing the other day & my 18 year old son popped his head through the door & asked who it was playing ......my work as a parent is complete ✌🏻
Well said ..
Brilliant , one of the best versions I've heard
Highly underrated performer.
Although I don't understand this song it is beautiful and this version the best.
Already been said , but I agree , for me , the best cover there has ever been takes the original to a whole different level
Different class one of best acoustic performances
This is so much better than the recorded version!
Saw this man live in Sheffield, what a voice and what a night, great performer with some beautiful songs. Lyrics to this years love is on our bedroom wall ❤️

Brilliance Throughout!!
Name a better cover? Actually name a better album....I will wait!! Amazing artist
Best cover, bush covering Fleetwood macs landslide, will top this & am a david gray fan, checkout landslide by bush on rooftop
Shipbuilding Elvis Costello.
Still one of my favourite albums. Always had a thing for David. Love his head wobbles ❤️
I love him and his head wobbles, too! 😊
The head bobble is one thing, but when his drummer gets going, that's another story.
Such as great version, I really thought it was his song. Big shout out to Soft Cell. 👏
Same for me, I've only recently heard the Soft Cell version on played on the radio and was shocked to find out it wasn't written by David Gray!
@ADAMH0 really written in 1981 !!
I always have this debate about how a cover can never ever ever be better than the original.....but this is. Unreal and so glad he put it on the album
You should listen to handbags and gladrags by rod stewart then listen to the stereophonics cover
brilliant.
So good. Just like I remember it. Same drummer - I always thought that guy was fantastic.
What a seasoned performer. For me and I hope many others, take white ladder to bed for the time of your life.
Getting joaquin phoenix on the keyboard is huge
Wtheck?
The best singer ever!
One of the best voices in the game
Holy sheet, his voice has improved in just sound alone
Brilliant cover so moving does the original version an honour
I'm completely in love with that voice, it cut into me like a double edged sword and leaves my guts on the ground
Awesome 👍
One of the greatest covers of all time
And Clune on the drums. ... he's just awesome ... ! ! ! !
White ladder was and still is a top album.
Should be a much bigger star. So underated i first saw him at glastonbury 2000 was brilliant.
Superb 👏
superb voice ....same as it was years ago, danced to soft cell back in the day!
Brilliant version.
I can always rely on this guy to fall back on no matter what mood I'm in. Great artist with huge talent.
First note he sang garnered a like. True musicians.
Amazing
Thank you for a rendering of this song full of yearning and deep emotion. Its how I always hear it.
