Zookeepers fight to keep animals safe at Kyiv zoo as Russian invasion of Ukraine continues

As the invasion of Ukraine continues, animals at a zoo in the capital Kyiv have been caught up in intensifying attacks by Russian forces. About 50 staff of the zoo have been living together to take care of about 4,000 animals which have been shaken by the blasts and continued shelling that has become the norm since February 24, 2022, at the start of the invasion which has now entered its second week. Ukraine is also struggling to help people caught up in the violence, and has called on Russia to allow humanitarian corridors for besieged citizens. The United Nations said more than 1 million refugees had fled in just seven days.

animals are innocent, the only ones pure of heart and they deserve our love and care because they give pure love and are the only ones who never betray, I hope you can protect and save them!

This zoo is awesome really ! . It's just beside my University and I was planning to visit this soon as in march. Now they're fighting hard to keep them alive 😭

Throughout all this madness, I totally forgot about the animals that will suffer too by the hands of man. House pets, zoo animals, and the natural living animals which did nothing but exist have to suffer.😭
I have birds at home and know they can be quite fearful of loud noises and wake up very easily to noises and so been thinking of the poor birdies of Ukraine :( why do humans gotta be so destructive

We must remember that non of these helpless creatures deserve this. Holding these heroes in my heart and so many other animal rescue groups that have stayed behind. If the Russia invaders harm these creatures and those protecting them you will see true outage.

I remember those zoos in Palestine's and those animals are always under threat. Now makes me wonder what ever happen to them. Have they recover. But yes in war, even animals are not safe

😭 People can evacuate but not animals. 🙏 I'm so glad the zookeepers are still there but for how long and will there be enough food? What about all the poor farm animals too? I've never been so happy to be VEGAN! If anything happens, I'm not going to care leaving vegetables behind. Pets and animals are a whole different isdue!

The battle for Kyiv happens in the next few days. There is no way to get in or out from there for now
The Unbelievable Courage. It comes without thought. Strong people in Ukraine knowing they Leave no one behind Not even the magnificent animals and birds and reptiles of their own. Zoo. Any explanation why dont just relocate the animal to neighboring country until ceasefire?
how are they gonna relocate animals in the middle of a war, you need special transport and equipments, theres no way they can relocate an elephant or gorilla that easily. Relocating animals is a difficult task.
Some of them are relocated, for example there are some Kievan tigers in Poznań, the city where I live but moving these animals is difficult for the reasons someone else mentioned here.
