    How about that! An old roller pulling a "tribute to Fred Dibnah" green gypsy wagon!
    There are so many reasons for a yank from Massachusetts like me to envy the British love of old machinery. One is the opportunity to watch a vintage steam engine trundle by one's drive,, and another is the honor of seeing an American pickup with nearly 8 decades on the clock in the possession of a family who truly cherishes it.
    During the pandemic, I discovered th BBC series on the irascible but fascinating steeplejack, Mr. Dibnah, and back in 1970, I had the honor of restoring a similar (1941) Dodge to yours for my Dad, so your adventures with the "Blue Dreamy" are a great comfort to my memories of him.

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  2 месяца назад +2

      Yes fortunately lots of people are fond of old machinery around here. Mr Dibnah was a legend, I was fortunate enough to meet him at a steam rally a loooong time ago. I had his "life story" book with me at the time and he kindly signed it for me, taking up a full page in Victorian-era handwritten script (plus an oily thumbprint) in doing so.

    Thanks for running to catch the steam roller. Quite a rig. Good to see the Dodge out and working. My '52 Dodge pickup had steel sheet welded into the bed covering the wood. The previous owner used it for hauling wet cement! Those olde Dodges are workhorses. Harley's olde bicycle had white on the rear half of the fender. As a kid, I remember Raleigh bicycles in the 1950's and '60's had the same treatment on the rear fender. Was that a British thing?

    • @oldclassiccarUK

      I think the white on the back of the mudguard may have been a throwback to when bikes were used during the blackout in WW2 but I could be wrong. I know cars had their wing edges and bumpers painted white to help them stand out in the dark during blackout conditions in the war.

      Yeah many good times spent there, sat around drinking tea and talking about old things. It's not often that I run, as you are aware, but the clinkety-clanking of an approaching steamer will get me into 2nd gear, if only for a moment

      I've known it 20+ years and it was full of amazing stuff for a long time, although a working classic car garage it was kind of a hub for likeminded old-car fans. If I'd had deep enough pockets and was a bit younger I'd have considered buying it probably.

    Hi 👋 Harley's bike certainly takes me back in time. My cycle was a 1950s one , and i rode to school on it. I think mine was a Raleigh make. I would put my school satchel on the back rack. I would make sure to avoid pot holes in the road as the seat wasnt very comfortable. I felt all the bumps. Lol 😆.

    Thank you for a more off the wall view of things. It made for a more interesting video. Your Youthful Assistant's new purchase of a Co-op Bicycle in reasonably complete original condition was of interest. Watching him peddling it round reminded me as an ardent rider of these stirrup braked devices. That as manufactured they were always over geared in bottom gear. So the best way to treat them is with a nice new chain & a bigger sprocket to fit on the Stermey Archer rear hub gear. A couple of extra teeth turns all the gears into usable ones. I also see that in a shed you have a Raleigh Popular Bicycle, fitted with the all weather chain case & no signs of any high tensile steel label on the front of the down tube below the seat. My one has a large frame & you need to be over 6ft to ride it. Also, it only has a minimal chain guard & you can pick it up with two fingers spread apart. It has the normal 28" wheels for 1.5" tyres. You can easily find out if your one is similar by picking it up. I think they stopped making them in the early 50s.
    My one also has the 3 speed Stermey with the dynamo built in. Properly geared, they are very nice to ride.
    Sad to see that one of the channel's favourite old garage buildings is being sold. I assume the land will be re-developed. At least you got your spare parts.

      Thanks Mervyn, it's always fun to go out in the old pickup and talk about old stuff back here. I don't know a great deal about the old Raleigh, although it's never struck me as being particularly light. As far as I know the garage has sold, to a non-garage business but my understanding is that the building will remain in use.

    I started with dragging old Push Bikes out of local hedges and fixing them up for fun, ( it was the late '60s ) and as soon as I could I moved up to old Mopeds, Mobylettes, Raleigh Runabouts even the odd NSU Quickly's then the Motorbikes showed up. I still have a few old Motorbikes (5) and a old Car. Love the hobby and although my family thought ( Knew ) I was a bit potty I would not change a thing. Lovely to see the Standard.

    Now what are the chances of a Steam Roller and Living Wagon just trundling by as you were filming? Wonderful stuff, R. I. P. Mr. Fred Dibnah. It was worth collecting the spare axle for the Dodge, always useful to have such a thing as of course they aren't something you could just order from your local car shop. Likewise with the Nuts and Bolts and screws. Now here's a question for you: Harley mentioned Kilometres, I am not aware of any part of the USA that uses Kilometres so why would your Speedometer have such markings? Anyway a great video Rick and please don't sell the Standard. Steph from IDAC has just bought a Standard 10 in good order apart from some rust spots. Although I did not mention your name I did tell her I subscribed to another channel where the creator had a Standard 8 so you can't sell it yet, at least not for a good while! :-) 👍👍

    • @oldclassiccarUK

      I usually spot maybe one or two steamers going past every year, you can hear them a mile away so there's usually plenty of time to nip out and watch them go by. This time it was a bit rushed, just lucky I was already outside with the camera. I saw something about the Std 10 you mentioned but haven't watched anything, it seems like it'll be at the NEC so I'll keep an eye out for it there.

      I think it probably had an oil bath chain case at some point, but as they make removing the rear wheel a bit more involved (say for a tyre swap) I think it'll probably stay as it is for now. Thanks for watching!

    Having the gear change on the handlebar makest the CWS a bit posh. My first bike (which I inherited from my grandad), had rod brakes like yours, but had the gear change on the crossbar. Could be a bit of a liability if the gears slipped.

    Whilst I appreciate the OLD stuff and that people go on about pat and ena, you really should replace the glass on the truck for safety if for no other reason., and it would make a great video.
    0 to 60, sometime when the truck feels like it.
    Why is it the young like to contradict and pretend they know better, it's really annoying, do that on you own video's.

    Excellent video Rick, that old garage needs to go to a sympathetic new owner, perhaps the present one can put some sort of covenant on it. The car in the showroom area looks like an old Vauxhall from the mid thirties, I was at a small autojumble at Cranmore station just over a week ago and picked up some pub ashtrays and a Pitman Press book on Vauxhall Light Sixes from the mid-thirties, as well as some of the the flowery English of the period there's an amusing picture of a bloke demonstrating the jack complete with the obligatory fag in the mouth! Hang on to the Standard and get shot of the moneypit Jag!

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  2 месяца назад

      I think the garage has sold now, not to a garage business but at least the building will survive I hope. Yes that was a pre-war Vauxhall, quite a temptingly-original example it was too. The plan for the Jag is longer-distance trips, not something that the Std is really geared up (or down...) for.

    Nice one RJ.
    I wonder how many times Harley has had to jog back to one of your vehicles after taking drive by shots. Harley was perfectly correct when he said it isn't an activity we see on other RUclips channels.
    CWS does indeed stand for Cooperative Wholesale Society which was the name it had when I was a kid before it became the Co-op and completely lost its way. Cycling Proficiency badges and certificates were the must have thing to get when I was at school and in fact my grammar school wouldn't allow anyone to use their bikes to go to school unless they had passed the test. It was widely promoted at most schools. With some of the cycling antics we see today it currently wouldn't go amiss in the 2020's.

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  2 месяца назад

      Ha yes he has done the RUclipsr jog on many occasions, he did the cycling profiency course when he was at primary school a few years ago, so it's still a thing, I remember doing it too then going on to a further day out which was more of a competition for the region I think it was.
