After the Meiji restoration they became really big and really heavy because of the prohibition of carrying swords turning them into self defense weapons
Some were even outfitted with knives and there is at least one registered case of one kiseru pipe outfitted with a percussion pistol

The channel Ask Seki Sensei demonstrates this in one of the videos. Eventually such pipes were rounded up and confiscated by the constabulary.

@@velazquezarmouries that's amazing I'd like to see a surviving example because I'm rather curious how that works mechanically .. the 2 unique weapon kiseru I've seen in private collections is ..a heavy brass ball tipped club kiseru like others shown in RUclips and one that had a very sharp knife hidden in it that pulled apart and was like a filet knife ..long sharp and thin probably 27 cm overall .. it had a fishing net scene on it's lacquered bamboo center silver tip and bowl both of a shorter ferrule style ... probably an excuse. .." Oh it's for fishing "

You should include the Tabako Bon which was usually a wooden smoking kit with a kiseru. They usually had a copper bowl that would hold smoldering coals and a bamboo ashtray. The bon itself might be simple or it might be ornate with drawers and handles.

Sir. I have question about pipes.
I am from Mongolia. And we have metal and wooden pipes antiques from the 13th century. Tabacco came from americas in 15th century. So wat were the mongols smoking back then? This story is very interesting because shamans do rituals to bring ancestral spirits into the body of the shaman and we have conversations about past and present. But i have heard from multiple cases where the spirits complain about the stuff they smoking cuz its not as strong as back in the old days.
My assumption is they been smoking cannabis or poppy?. Please give me any pointers where to research. Thank you.

In fact Kiseru was intended for cannabis, tobaco came later.

You said that this pipe was the only way to consume tobacco in Japan for several centuries....... this is not true. Snuff was also consumed in Japan. Even more so than pipe tobacco.

Kiseru were later also used as cigarette holders. I've also heard it alleged that, before tobacco, kiseru were used in the countryside to smoke something else which is coincidentally very popular in Amsterdam and grows everywhere (except Antarctica) like a-ahem-like a weed... Obviously the Tokugawa regime was very intolerant of recreational drug use so, if it actually ever was, it has been lost to history.

The ones for cigarettes are a lot smaller but likely came from lack to access of the type of tobacco needed for the Kiseru which is finely cut like hair. European style tobacco took over the whole market and was almost killed by the cigarette """""""tobacco""""""" industry. Luckily there has been a large resurgence in pipe smoking and people learning that pipe tobacco and cigarette """""""tobacco"""""" are very different things with entirely different levels of health risk.
The highest nicotine content you will get from pipe tobacco is like 7% while the lowest possible for cigarettes is 12% so even if you are heavy pipe smoker that only smokes the strongest stuff you will still objectively be healthier than someone who occasionally smokes the weakest cigarettes. It is unfortunate they are regulated almost the same
