SANTA TERESA, COSTA RICA 20 YEARS LATER! (TRAVEL GUIDE)

- Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
- It's been 20 years since I have been in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica and as I know a lot can change in that amount of time I guess I wasn’t full expecting it to change so much! Santa Teresa, Costa Rica is located on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula and is known for its surf and laidback atmosphere. It seems over the past decade the word has gotten out of how beautiful Santa Teresa is and tourists and foreign investors have been flocking here. So in this Costa Rica Travel Vlog we will be showing you around Playa Carmen, Playa Santa Teresa, a bit of Mal Pais and up to the Montezuma Waterfalls on ATV. I will also be talking about my experience returning after 20 years and a little of how this development has affected the locals, which is always something you should keep in mind when traveling, supporting the locals.

BEGINNING to realize that the bus trips, as opposed to more expensive travel (taxis and planes) truly gives you a valuable experience wonderful sight-seeing experience.. Notwithstanding the occasional downsides... ALSO it SMART as its frugal 💪 Saves the bucks for the "splurges.." 🎊
Absolutely!
Costa Rica was the country that opened it's door to me after leaving my native Cuba. The people were so welcoming and kind.I lived in Alajuela for 18 months. I hope you guys get to visit there during your stay.
Thank you so much for sharing! It’s a great place with such wonderful people! We wil definitely check it out! 👍🏽
🇨🇷❤🇨🇺
Very true … support locals, without them you would never get to experience true culture.
You know it!
Love you guys! That Waterfall looks AMAZEBALLS! 😍😍
Love you too!
Morning Country Collectors. What an awesome experience for Adam to see it again after 20 years. I couldn’t imagine how much it would have changed in all that time. Scary to think of how the next 20 years will impact such a beautiful spot.
Another beautiful video. Thank you once again for bringing us along. ❤️🍻
That’s so true. I hope the don’t let huge hotels build on the beach and keep it “smaller”. Thanks for being here!
Miss you guys!
I am going to Costa Rica in a few weeks with my family. thank you so much for this video. it really helped me! and I appreciate your interest in the planet and recommending to bring business to the locals and to "give make" not only to take. I loved that guys. THANK YOU.
You are so welcome! I’m glad it helped and hope you have an amazing adventure! 😃
$35US per bunk per night for a hostel? that is steep for 2 people! no Air BNB options I guess? I usually pay less than $30CAD for the Air bnb's I stay at in Mexico. although right now I am staying at my girlfriend's mother's house in GDL for only 4000 pesos for 5 weeks! and $1800 a month for a quad? thats more than double my monthly accommodation budget. bonkers. I would hate the dusty dirt roads in that place...
Yes it’s one of the most expensive places here. CR isn’t a budget destination. You can get dorms for $10 in other places and take the local bus 🚌 to save $$.
Great stuff !!!! I've been to Jaco numerous times, surfing the beaches south. Love your politics !!!!!! Aloha
Hi Steve! Thanks!
PURA VIDA amigos great adventure and content .also Adam you 20 years ago you came here with another novia (girlfriend) 🤐😅😁everything was changed here.pura vida and take care amigos
Yep!
Good morning. Thank you for sharing another wonderful experience with us. The beaches are beautiful. So nice to see some of these countries taking more steps to help keep the oceans clean. So looking forward to seeing your next video. Take care 🙂

Beautiful area and I’m so glad you got a little political 🥰. Social justice anywhere is so important ❤️🙏
Hi Nancy. Yes you are so right.
Thanks for bringing those topics up at the end I think some travelers overlook.
You bet!
You guys are awesome! Gracias por siempre tener un contenido A1…
PURA VIDA 🦥
Muchas gracias Ester!
❤🇨🇷What a Beautiful Message.
Keep the Pura Vida alive. 🇨🇷❤
❤️
Looks beautiful there and you look like you are having so much fun!
Hi!! Nice to see you! Yes it is very pretty! CR is full of natural beauty.
Wow, what a fantastic travel vlog! It's incredible to see how much Playa Carmen, Playa Santa Teresa, Mal Pais, and Montezuma Waterfalls have changed in 20 years. Your perspective on the development and its impact on the locals was insightful and thought-provoking. I appreciate how you emphasize the importance of supporting local communities while traveling. The ATV tour looked like an amazing way to explore the area. Thanks for sharing your journey and experiences with us. Can't wait to see more of your adventures! Safe travels!
Thank you so much! We appreciate you !
Lovely places! One of my best Costa Rica memories was going into a local art shop that sold paintings by several different artists and we liked one in particular and the shop worker was so happy because it was one of his paintings. It's hanging in our home now :D
Aww I love that!
excellent, very helpful video ! following now too.
🙏❤️
Sorry if I missed it in the video but what month was this that you visited?
🤷
Excellent ! Great idea to leave Mexico to show us other beauties around this part of the world! we live in a greedy world and thanks for your wisdom which itsa right on!
Thanks for joining us!
Rome2Rio is my best friend when traveling! It's fascinating how the endless march of time changes places. Ah that food all looks delicious. Making me miss CR. Playa Carmen is gorgeous. Vroom vroom, riding those ATVs looks like a lot of fun. Miss those beaches. Reminiscing man I feel you when I go back to places after several years. Oh Playa Cuevas looks amazing. I gotta mark this one down. Ooo haunted island! Let's do it! Oh I love that hike up the waterfalls. Do it Heidi! Backflip that rope! Oh Arroz, I love Arroz. What a great adventure guys.
Thanks 🙏 for your support!
It’s amazing how much things change but don’t change in 20 years … it’s nice to know they have grown so much but the beauty has not changed
👍 Absolutely!
Amazing vlog thank u 🙏🏾 im going next week
Hope you enjoy it!
So awesome that you’re back there after 20 years! Traveling the globe with the love of your life seems truly magical! Love watching both of you as you grow through all of your travel experiences! Thank you for sharing your lives with all of us!
Kelly we love having you. Thanks for being on this journey with us!
@@TheCountryCollectors what was your favorite place in Mexico?
More beautiful areas, and that beach you stopped to look at with white sand, wow! The waterfall was great as were the little "falls" you passed while walking toward the large one. Costa Rica sure is gorgeous.
Hi Cindy! Yes I know it seemed very u touched. Just gorgeous! Thanks for watching!
That banana beach restaurant is very cool. Great vibes. I am a big fan of the Atv rental and being able to tour around anywhere. Just think in 20 more years they will have those roads paved 😁👍. Great tips and trick as usual
Thank you 🙏
20 years is a long time, I think it depends on the will of the locals and the number of tourists who come to visit the country, it brings in money and it helps the country's economy develop, Costa Rica is a beautiful country and it deserves this, thanks for all the tips to visit it !
Well said! Thanks for coming along! ♥️
Hey guys! Thanks soo much for the wealth of information in the video. My girlfriend and I live in Playa Del Carmen and are visiting Costa Rica right now for a couple weeks. and decided to visit Jacó.. it was a little too busy/touristy for us, so now we took your advice and are heading to Montezuma on the Nicoya peninsula for a few days. Thanks again! Keep up the awesome videos! ✌️
That’s awesome!! We hope you enjoy it! I know you will!
Don’t go in March or April… so hot
👍
Costa Rica is one of the countries that I always wanted to visit. Thanks country's collectors for providing fresh perspectives of this beautiful country!!
Our pleasure!
I'm from Costa Rica and is nice hearing people saying good things about us, ticos and my country. Nice video.
Thanks! 😃
Hope you’ll head to the east coast- my daughter spent two months in Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo and absolutely loved it- very laid back and right next to national parks with sloths and many other incredible animals :)
Oh yes you know it!
Love your videos, all of them. My daughter is in Santa Teresa right now so I had to make sure I watched this one!
🙏🙏🙏
How long are you staying in Costa Rica for? Hope you go north to Nicaragua next, love watching your videos!
A couple of months. We would but drones are illegal so we can’t.
Thank you guys so much for bringing us along on another fantastic adventure… what a beautiful place .. I also loved the rustic side with the nature reserve… so relaxing. You both gave fantastic advice and recommendations of things to do in the area. Another place on our bucket list for sure. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it Tammy! We will stay in Montezuma next time! But I’m not sure if you get the sunsets on that side!
Amazing video which is motivating my family and I to visit. I spent a week in Mal Pais about 20 years ago and can't wait to go back. What month did you visit?
🙏❤️ not sure
Aww guys that atv drive was inspiring!
So beautiful!
We miss you Luis. How have you been?
Out of all the places the country collectors have traveled, this place seems like the less appealing to me. I would rather go to Manuel Antonio again. It’s closer to San José, and it’s not as dusty and as hot as this place appears to be.
👍
Costa Rica or maybe just Santa Teresa is just like Siargao in the Philippines. Lots of foreign tourist who are now residing on the island starting up their own business. It is now so gentrified. It's quite sad to witness.
Yes we were in Siargao maybe 5 years ago now. If there’s a balance, and if the people moving in are doing so for the rights reasons and supporting the locals and living in harmony I see no problem. But when it’s purely for greed and nothing is going back to the local community it’s an issue.
Sorry I am late today!
Glad to see you now
Thank you for the beautiful videos. I have a question. Manuel Antonio Beach Is the most beautiful beach in Costa Rica. Or is there a more beautiful beach than this one, and is Costa Rica safe? Is tourism in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador safe or not? Thank you.
Your welcome Alix! Beauty is a very personal thing so I cannot say for sure that that beach is the most beautiful beach in Costa Rica. What make a place special for you? As for the travel
To those other countries you would have to check the local government websites and Facebook pages to get a more comprehensive look. Safety is import so definitely look into it. When we traveled to this places years ago it was wonderful but things can change. Have a wonderful adventure! 👍🏽🙏🇨🇷
@@TheCountryCollectors Thank you for the answer and information. I wish you the best of times
Another beautiful place. Thanks for bringing these spots to my home.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am loving the beautiful waterfront areas - it's like every beach you go to is even better. The atv ride seems like a fun way to get around as well - I've actually never been on one as an adults before. I would be cool to go to that island in low tide - almost like a secret passage way. And swimming in the waterfall would be another great addition to the day - nice tour!
Thanks so much!
Nice video! Would you go back again!? Sensed mix feelings on it but in general positive.
❤️🤷
Another great video.
The sunsets in Costa Rica just can't be beat.
Pura vida is right!
You got that right! It’s an amazing country with so much natural beauty! Thanks for coming along! ❤️
i need to go to santa teresa!!
👍
wow - there are a LOT of women (non native?). seems to be a great play for groups of women to travel solo or without men.
Lots of single men and women traveling here. Great place to meet people.
Very true … we belong to the earth … very important to be taking care of our oceans and nature
100%
👔🗣Tks Guy's 🥁🎶 Luved Guatemala Lake 🇬🇹
It’s our pleasure!
Hello friends i sow in português i think they know português. Kkk
Oh wow
Some of those trails are definitely for younger people It's a little dangerous for older people who aren't sure of their footing
I think for all people these rocky paths can be dangerous. You have to go slow and wear good footwear for sure. 😊 Have a great day!
peepers peepin
Keep them peepin Allan!
Costa Rica is very nice! Tropical birds everywhere! We were in La Fortuna, CR and we loved it!
Only thing Costa Rica is much more expensive for sure. Most of the prices are the same or even more than the US. That was a shock to me.
Hi Lisandro! Yes it is such a wonderful, rice and diverse country. And you are right about the prices we have been shocked quite a bit too! But hey it is what it is! It was funny the other night our hostel host was saying when he went to Mexico and ordered food he got the bill and saw it was $3 and he was like there is no way it is only this much. He couldn’t believe it. He says he hears how expensive CR is all the time but it’s all he knows because he grew up here.
@@TheCountryCollectors omg LOL! We also heard similar stories about Costa Ricans going to Mex and finding out it is super cheap!
But the People in Costa Rica are super nice and wonderful! And that’s what maters the most.
I just feel super bad that they have to pay such high prices!
Yes especially on imported goods. I wonder how much their cars cost. And obviously I didn’t mean to say it’s a rice country lol but they do love their beans and rice! 😊
So beautiful! Thank you again....
So, did you sport a man-bun when you were here 20 years ago???
Inquiring minds want to know😂
Haha no actually this is where I shaved my head for this first time in Puerto Viejo. Had a huge head of hair and got sick of it so shaved it all off and have been doing it since.
@@TheCountryCollectors right on brother👍🤣
Very beautiful vlog. The falls looks so nice. Great capture of the place and very informative. It look really nice surfing place. Road to 100K subscribers, full support here. Keep safe always.
Thank you so much 🙂
Bella Costa Rica.
Súper bella!
Santa teresa and the península are so beautiful! Did you visit Nosara?
No we didn’t make it down there!
I appreciate your closing statements. We all need to be a bit more conscious.
Absolutely
I can just imagine that it all changed so much in 20 years!
That beach looked great and nice that there was a life gard.
Lots of dust!
And who needs TV with such views!
All the best!
Thanks 🙏
CR is quite expensive in comparison to where you have been prior.
Yes it is.
Love your videos. Really get the itch to travel when I watch you guys. 👍🏼
Thanks David! Any plans for travel in the near future?
@@TheCountryCollectors yes, hopefully Mexico City this year 😊
Which one did you like better tamarindo or Santa Teresa?
ST and the surrounding areas
Love it you guys! Surfs up.
🏄♀️
Visiting a place after 20 years, it certainly would have been great visiting these places after so long and seeing so much has changed. Nice vlog.
Thanks for joining us!
I would love to take surf lessons. Sadly I'm afraid of the deep unknown! It's silly but true! Also wow that's amazing a wild horse just walking along the beach!! Moped looks like the way yo go even off roading!! What an amazing video as always. Another great tour to add to the saved list!! Thanks for sharing your adventures! So glad you took us along!
Thanks for joining us!
We were just there in mid March and i'm thrilled at your synopsis at the end of this video. Mind you this was our first visit but you can see what is happening here before your eyes, and we did'nt like it. The un-checked growth, the pricing out of ticos, there are so many large homes being built up the hill and those are not locals they are expats. The one place we stayed on our trip to Costa Rica owned by a foreigner was here. After that we were mindful to give our business to local families and businesses. I'm worried that so many of "US" will go there and make there like here or so many other generic destinations altered by visitors and expats.
I know. Something needs to be done to prevent this from happening.
@@TheCountryCollectors Portugal has just closed down its “golden visa” program because foreign purchasers caused such a huge increase in housing that the Portuguese themselves were displaced. Let’s hope more governments do the same.
@@Poet1952 to me its more than just housing, its really cultural death, you walk or drive through Santa Theresa or other Nicoya Beach towns and its all, Yoga retreats, sushi resteraunts, surf shops, and any number of other businesses owned by someone who moved there and having zero to do with Costa Rican culture and food. Presumably the things people visit a nation for. I always say i want to get to Cuba before McDonalds and Starbucks do and this is what i mean.
❤
❤️🙏
Another great video and wonderful experience of travel. It's so nice to see the changes and how beautiful that place.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The road networks are much better than 20 years ago
Oh yes I’ve noticed that for sure 👍
You guys know how to have fun thanks for showing us around.
Our pleasure!
ST has really changed in 20 years. Montezuma is pretty much the same as 20 years ago. Less building, still busy, but a bit more authentic.
👍
Omg!# than you for taking me my lovies!!!! ❤ I just loved the journey. The 20 year revisit...
Heidi your beautiful spirit shines thru...every Time! Adam ..you too! What and adorable couple to travel with!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sandy! Happy Sunday! You’re so sweet! Thank you 🙏
Hello! Listening to Adam talking about his trip 20 years ago just reminded me of that 90's Sublime song: "me fui a Costa Rica para tomar y surfear, platicaba con la raza 'cause they know who we are..." ¡Saludos Country Collectors! ✌️😎
Love that!!
Hey guys, as always fantastico. The town has a very 80s Key West hippie style. At the end of the day, the most important question was answered, yes Adam deserves a chauffeur. but my wife and I kept thinking, ah, guys it's getting darker, ah guys, it's getting darker, lol. Please be safe, and enjoy.
Aww thanks for worrying about us! We appreciate you both! We made it back in the dark but took it slow.
Hi Heidi and Adam! Super interesting vlog. The food looks amazing! Are you staying in hostels because accommodation is that much more expensive than other countries? Or is there a lack of short term rentals? Enjoy your journey! Looking forward to next week. Cheers from Lisa in Winnipeg 🇨🇦 ❤
Hi Lisa! Yes because it is expensive. Much more than Mexico and Guatemala and surrounding countries.
heidi had a mask. how did adam do with all the dust?! *cough cough*
It wasn’t that bad actually because there weren’t other people around kicking up the dust. Just got on his back a lot while he was the passenger.
I like the dirt roads too but that dust had to get tiring
I’m sure it does wiping stuff down all the time
What’s your money cost to travel the way you do?
We budget $1200 a month.
The food looks so yummm
Love me a casado!
❤ when I was there, I took a chicken bus from San Jose to Manuel Antonio beach an amazing ride! And that was in 1981 😳 seeing all the development and crowds makes me realize what a beautiful gift it was for me to see that country back in the 80s
Oh absolutely! What a gift indeed! Thanks for sharing.
I hear you Adam. Went through the same emotions going back to Pt. Vallarta after 30 years, crazy eh? Thanks again for bringing us along, cheers you two, hasta luego.
Yeah it was shocking to say the least. Glad I got to see it back then and same for you in PV.
Another great travel video (and hello Costa Rica!) Absolutely loving the beaches around CR. And raising the plastics awareness to reduce its entry into the oceans. Every bit helps. It i interesting to see the increased costs for travel, food and accommodation. It appears to be more expensive to be in Costa Rica than other countries in the same region, my purse strings had a little ticket price shock with the cost of accommodation. But sometime syou jjust need to reach that little deeper into the pockets otherwise we would never leave our own backyards. We are loving your travels through CR, keep on having an amazing time and thank you for taking us along with you!
Hi! We’re so glad you’re joining us here! And yes… it’s definitely not a budget travel destination. It’s quite a bit more pricey than the neighboring countries but we’ve come to realize you just have to accept it or worrying about it will ruin your time. 😊 Hope you’re having a great day!
Wow, so beautiful and thank you for sharing such a beautiful magical place. What is the best time to visit Costa Rica and I heard they have some beautiful mountains and to visit. Stay safe amigos😊
Thank you! Dry season is Dec through April! Yes 🙌 gorgeous highlands!
As always, your content never fails to bring a smile on my face. Another beautifully crafted video of Costa Rica. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Oh snap first comment of the group 😅
Pura Vida guys! Love restaurants in Santa Teresa but the road is brutal!
Thanks for being here!
Santa Teresa is so beautiful, the situation with gentrification is really hitting hard here, I can tell you that me and as many locals costarricenses we have to strain our selves from visiting these places because of how expensive they’ve got 😢 you will mainly see foreigners visiting
😞
$35 per bunk - is that the norm there?
Yes it seems to be!
That’s my kind of adventure, off the beaten path. Was that the going rate for ATVS?
I think you can find some $60 ones too
#costa #costarica #santateresa #puravida #countrycollectors
Thank you 🙏
So cool to hear how it has all changed since you we’re there 20 years ago. Especially the hostel. Love the quiet beach you went to 💕
That was gorgeous!
Good morning my beautiful country collectors, happy funday 😊
Hi Tammy! Good morning!!
So much beauty and wildlife! It is really crazy to see a place grow so much over the last 20 years! Great to get your perspectives on where to go, what to eat, and how to stay safe. Thanks as always!
Hi Elisabeth! It’s our pleasure. We are so glad we can share our experiences with you! Hope you had a great day!
Love the drone shots they really give such a unique perspective that you don't see from the ground.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow!! What a difference 20 years makes!! Always good food!! Love the ocean!!🌊 Beautiful beaches!!
Thanks for watching!! Love you!
Love u too!!
Another fantastic video! We enjoy following and supporting you two in your travels ❤ You’ve inspired us to take the time, spend the money and just GO! Safe travels!
Yessss we love hearing that!!
Work hard play hard! You deserve it!
oh my! now its on the list for sure. theres a place we went to 18 years ago in mexico. didnt buy land then ..now its all developed... dodged a bullet on that and got something off the path in another small pueblo 6 yrs ago. dm me for details, would love to host you two. need to rewatch for the bugs. hugs in advance
Nice work! Happy for you. You talking about Sayulita and SP next door?
@@TheCountryCollectors was going to do sayulita 18 yrs ago. got a little casita in lo de marcos 90 paces from the beach 6 yrs ago instead. very quiet. mas tranquilo
Oh wow an island cemetery… what a beautiful final resting place ❤
I know, it’s so unique.
Free waterfalls that’s amazing … “chasing waterfalls” love it
