Removing Scratch From Sapphire Watch Crystal

- The following video is a brief demonstration of using diamond paste to remove scratch from a sapphire watch crystal.
Key points
1. Start with a fine paste and go more abrasive depending on how deep the scratch is.
2. Buff in circular motion. Do not keep still and avoid back and forth motion.
3. Mind the temperature of the glass and the watch. If it gets too hot the glass will shatter.
4. Buff at low speed and take your time. Check progress every few seconds.
That’s amazing I was always told you couldn’t get the scratches out
I’m more amazed that it’s scratched at all
@@Nave6W me too. A titanium ring can scratch a sapphire crystal? Usually, only diamond can scratch it
@@marcnaidu5804 its likely just a scratch on the external AR coating not the sapphire itself. This process likely just removed the external AR coating (which shouldn't even be on a watch if it has dual sided ar)
I'll somthing cab be cut it can be scratched sapphire crystals are cut to size so yes they scratch if serviced many watches over 15 years lots of high end watches like rolex breguet etc they all can get a scratch on the crystals
@@Nave6Wthey said Rolex sapphire crystals couldn’t be scratched either, but i managed to chip one and scratch the 2nd in a span of 3 years, no idea how
which brand of buffing wheel do you use? Can I know the dimension and specifications? Great video
Thanks for the knowledge
this brings me hope for my hairline scratch on my Panerai i achieved during a laundry session hehe
Would like to know how long that took in real time to do please regards colin from croydon England 👍
Looks like brand new
where can i buy this diamond paste?
are there any visible circles from glass polishing? have there been any traces?
sandrogdz no none whatsoever thank god. The key is to keep moving across the glass to avoid creating swirls or hot spots
Very interesting to know, thank you!
Now, do they make a wire wheel for a Dremel that doesn't disintegrate the first time you use them?
How much time did you spend on that scratch? I just tried 0.5 micron paste after 5 mins didn't do anything that i could notice... Just ordered 1.0 micron paste.
depends on the kind of sapphire you are working on KAPPA ;)
All the Omega dealers told me that a sapphire, crystal scratch cannot be removed 🤨
It cant
Of course it can but they just want to remplace the cristal.
Same here. Seeing this, i wonder whether it's true though
In this case is the AR coating removed👍
Forgot to mask the bezel :0 but still, great video :)
i do not agree with most of the comments (i have several scratched sapphire crystals, they DO get scratches depending on your lifestyle/work/environment)
and i do not agree with YOU in one single thing :
Since when does TITANIUM (or its oxide) scratch sapphire??? it does not. it might do if theres a gemstone inside, or if you really push it HARD
you can scratch hard things with soft things if you use enough force i guess
most common way to scratch your crystal is on concrete (walls etc) and not the c itself, its the quartz stones inside that will cause scratches.
but thats just me, perhaps other folks have other exp.
I managed to scratch a sapphire crystal just by accidentally hitting a wall at my house. I'm not sure if its the antireflective coating what got the marks but it definitely looks scratched.
@ yeah i have a couple of scratched sapphire crystals around. its the c itself in my case, i dont have a single watch with ar OVERcoating (its on the inside on my watches) ... i have no omega lol
There are different types of sapphire. Crystal & glass. The glass version is not as hard as the crystal, but can be advertised as sapphire. I don't know if deep blue uses crystal or not, but i smacked my tungsten ring on it and gave it a small chip.
@@--RSL-- mineral glass is not sapphire. sapphire has different qualitys, all the same hardness. quality depends on clearness, colour etc. its artificial btw, watch some videos here how its produced. interesting stuff. its cheap now, a domed/double domed sapphire for a watch is a couple of dollars now, it once was expansive, cutting technology changed, and the scale of production made it cheap. mineral glass sapphire is nonsense. marketing. shouldnt be allowed.
@ me too. I live in the Philippines where we have rough glazed hollow block walls and I know from experience that it WILL $cratch an Rolex Datejust sapphire cry$tal 😥
Was this only using micron 1.0? Or did you then go down the microns to less abrasive in stages? :) Thank you in advance! Love the video, I have a scratch on my sapphire crystal datejust and want to try and repair myself whilst keeping costs down of not buying a new crystal and fitment expenses
Late reply **** yeah for that particular job just 1.0 did the trick but I keep on hand from 5.0 all the way to 0.25
@@TeamBryan85 remind me about the numbers ... 1.0 is LESS ABBRASIVE than the 5.0 ? or the other way round?
@@marcnaidu5804yes 1 is less than 5
Does this remove the AR coating?
If on the outside, absolutely!
What would a watch repair shop charge to do this job?
Depends on the shop. Some places will rip you off and also not know what they're doing.. others will have miracle workers and charge you nothing.
Deep blue wants $90 plus shipping to replace my crystal... That's basically half the cost of the watch brand new. I'd just keep the chipped one for a beater & buy a new one vs replace the crystal on mine.
@@--RSL-- well i would charge you depending on the ar coating you want (how many layers) sapphire is around 10bucks plus ar plus 10bucks for replacing. some watchmakers charge 20 for the install, so prices range between 20 and 40 for everything done by pros
@@The1Rausch from what I understand, Rolex uses AR coatings only on the underside.
@@Kevins-Philippine-Retirement yeah. most brands do. they use clear ar, 3 layers i guess. and ?
i didnt even know diamond paste existed before lol, can u tell me where u bought it?
Amazon
Never do that if you have an anti-reflective coating on the outside of the glass ! (For exemple on many Breitling or Omega models)
Music is too loud, can t hear you
I just freaking chipped my sapphire crystal with my tungsten wedding ring... SOB. I'm going to try and buff it out w my diamond paste, if not I'll have to send it in to get replaced. 🤬
Sucks man. Sorry too hear that. I'm passed because my oris aquis has a.hairline scratch. Unfortunately oris only deals with their service center in Massachusetts and charges around 400.00.for sapphire replacement. Wowsa
Most of these scratches are on the AR costing, sapphire crystal scratch is very rare as it’s super hard
I just had one less than a week ago. Hit the pointy edge of a marble table at hotel lobby. Left more of a nick even. Meeting when it catches my finger nail if I run it across the scratch 🥲
Thanks for the helpful instruction, but seriously, no one can hear what you're saying. At 1:25 the decision to simultaneously speak in an absolute whisper AND put loud background music over your video is not the best decision. It is absolutely impossible to hear what you're saying for most of this video. Super frustrating.
What????

You should have just replaced the crystal by a watchmaker.
Instead you’re buffing the watch with no protection on the bezel which can cause extra damage to the case.
Thanks for that I have been building , repairing and polishing/ refinishing jewelry and watches for quite some years now so i wasn’t worried about masking the bezel but for right detail jobs yea I do mask. The purpose of this video was just to show people that there is a low cost option to fix scratched sapphire.
Do you think an amatuer just happens to have all of that watch maintenance equipment on hand? He's a professional. And this was an instructional video on how to remove scratches from a sapphire watch crystal. It wouldn't be a very good instructional video if he just replaced the crystal.
It is just a Tag, so why not?
