that 'vase' is called a spittoon, and that's something used to spit in, including your old tobacco chews, so it would have spit and used, nasty, slobbery tobacco in it. that means that in order to get the money, the person has to reach in there and put their hand in the slobber and nasty tobacco.

That's the theory. In reality, as mentioned by Mark Twain and others, many spitters had poor aim resulting in a stinking mess all over the floor, much the same way that smokers used to carelessly grind out their butts on the floor anywhere and everywhere. Eventually there was a public health campaign to remove public spittoons and discourage the use of chewing tobacco. Remember, this was when tuberculosis (aka "consumption") was still a widespread disease which could be transmitted via spittle.

Walter Brennan was a true National Treasure. You should watch him play Judge Roy Bean in the Westerner with Gary Cooper, The Pastor in Sergeant York or Ike Clanton in My Darling Clementine to the sidekick in To Have and Have Not with Bogart, The Far Country with Jimmy Stewart or Red River with John Wayne. Villain or sidekick, he was always a joy to watch. Because he lost his teeth early on, he could play older or goofy just by removing his dentures. He is hilarious in the Princess and the Pirate with Bob Hope and looks exactly like Dopey from Snow White only older and more insane.
One of the saddest days of my life occurred when I was telling someone about a movie that I had never seen before with Walter. I was going on about how great he was in the movie and the guy says, "Who is Walter Brennan?". I truly felt so sorry for him.

Ok, Mia. You gotta see…”Support You Local Sheriff,” 1969. It’s a turn on the “lone Sheriff” story… Oh, Mia the “ Vase” is a Spittoon, a place where the customers spit their tobacco juice in it. Disgusting. In the book, by Dean Martins son Ricci Martin “That’s Amore,” explains a time when his fans would visit his house. He an Jeanne would entertain, Dean would go upstairs to hide from his guests. Once Jerry Lewis went up to see what was up? With Dean? Dean felt very, insecure. Out of place because his guests were Doctors, Lawyers, Politicians and high class people who just wanted to see him. And Love him. Jerry asked him to see the fans, but he also realized that Dean needed his “alone time.” Dean explained to Jerry, “ I just feel outta place near those people” Jerry didn’t ask anymore. So, Dean just loved his family, alone time and his Westerners on TV. So, anytime one of his friends would ask to be in a western, he was there! The Spittoon was a way to Humiliate a person, “kick him when he was down.” I grew up in my teen years in Gallup, NM mean teens would mess with poor drunks in the street, all the time. Awful deeds that they would do to victimize them. Difficult stuff, sorry about that Mia.

Walter Brennan was in about a zillion movies, many of them westerns. He had at least one major leading role, playing Judge Roy Bean in "The Westerner", from 1940. I first saw him when I was very young, on a tv broadcast of the western parody, "Support Your Local Sheriff", with James Garner. He often acted along with John Wayne, as did Ward Bond, who plays Pat Wheeler here, and who had a tiny role as a bus driver in "It Happened One Night" ("Maybe they do and maybe they don't").
Brenner has a major role in another Hawks' film, "To Have and Have Not", the first movie pairing Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
Dean Martin was very under-rated, in part, possibly because of the image he himself cultivated, but he was a singer, an actor, and apparently, a gentleman too. My father loved him because of another wester comedy, "Texas Across the River", with Martin and Joey Bishop (playing an American Indian....), and handsome French actor Alain Delon playing a Spaniard way too concerned with honor. The movie birthed a by-word among my siblings and me, the only order ever given, ad nauseum, by a military leader, played with total commitment by Peter Graves: "A-roar-HAR!".
The vase is a spittoon. Exactly what it sounds like it is.

Hope I'm the first to point out that the vase in
Rio Bravo was a spittoon, another way to humiliate an alcoholic Dean Martin. My father
was an alcoholic and when my mother first saw this movie with me, she walked out of the room in tears. She was very protective of my dad until his death in1971. She also hated the police for rolling drunks and spent the night in a d.c. jail several times for yelling at judges when she knew the cops had abused my dad. And Dean
Martin slugs Wayne for getting between him and the price of a bottle of booze. And did you notice how EVERYONE gave Wayne a hard time?
Hawks once said that a leader/hero doesn't have to do anything but lead. And when he leads, his buddies better follow or they're gone, which his why Wayne gave him 2 chances then cut him loose and Dude had to ask to come back. Colorado had to save his life to get on Wayne's team. And when Wayne kissed Stumpy
on the head, I know it was a joke, but I dare you to name another mainstream film where the star kissed another guy as a joke. Rio Bravo was remade by John carpenter as ASSAULT ON
PRECINCT 13 in the early 70's. Finally, Hawks is a sort of secret cult director whose films made
tons of money, but those of us in the cult know
that even during the McCarthy, Hawks never let
up on his comedic assault on middle class values. Hawks/Cary Grant fanatic.

@8:52- Dean Martin did a great job in this movie. He did most of his early stuff with Jerry Lewis in comedies (you should check those out, too), as well as the Matt Helm (spy spoof movies of the 60s), and of course "Ocean's 11" with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. He can be found in a more serious role in "The Young Lions," with Marlon Brando and Montgomery Cliff. You should also check out that movie !

I am enjoying your reaction, it's done very well.
There are 3 westerns I really like, True Grit, The Big Country and this.
    It's a good ensamble piece.
John Wayne, Walter Brennan and Dean Martin fit well together. You have the tension of the situation, broken at times by the interraction with Angie Dickenson, the love interest, and Walter Brennan who was great as stumpy, who took most of the siruation in his stride.
Then there's Dean Martin, he was on great form in this. There's another western he did called Five Card Stud a western murder mystery that he was also good in. On the whole I am a bigger fan of his singing he wasn't a great actor but he had his moments. I think his character developement during the story was the best though.
Ricky Nelson who was also known more for his singing was a good choice to play Colorado and played his part well. As I said, one of my favourite westerns.

That last one is less well-known, but so good! (There's also Support Your Local Gunfighter, but I feel "Sheriff" is a bit better.) Also, maybe Two Mules For Sister Sarah (more of a western with a fair bit of comedy). I'm sure there are more that I haven't thought of, or haven't seen.

Rio Bravo was a reunion for Hawks, Wayne, Walter Brennen, and musical director Dimitri Tiomkin who all worked together on Red River. The music for the song Dean sings is the main theme for Red River score. Walter Brennen was a three time best supporting actor Oscar winner. Walter costarred with Cary Cooper in four movies in the early forties: Meet John Doe, Seargent York, The Westerner( his last Oscar win) and the Pride of the Yankees.

Mia, If a John Wayne movie was filming well, Wayne would alway's put on his "lucky" blue shirt. Legend has it the whole cast had a great time filming Rio Brava. Dean Martin had only made comedy films upto this point. He earned a lot of respect from the movie critic's at the time for his performance. Rumour was, that when Dean poured the whiskey back into the bottle, it was done in 1 take. John Wayne and Angie Dickinson had large age differance between them. But their on-screen chemistry was so good that you don't notice the age differance.By using a lot of T.V. actors that were used to shooting fast a lot of good product was being finished every day. When anyone gives their list of the top ten westerns of all time Rio Bravo is always somewhere on the list. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Angie Dickenson told a funny story about Rick Nelson on the set. He had a birthday while filming. So John Wayne and Dean Martin put a huge pile or horse manure in the middle of the street. They both went to get Rick Nelson , they picked him up, carried him to the manure, and threw him in it, then sang Happy Birthday to him...lol

  • @jeffry1961
    @jeffry1961 3 года назад +3

I loved that you picked up on Dude's story. As far as I'm concerned the movies is more about Dude's story arc as opposed to John Wayne's part. It's more of a Dean Martin movie then a John Wayne movie. John Wayne is basically playing John Wayne. You can also see the influence of Leah Brackett's script. She has done a number of scripts for Hawks and they all have strong female characters. Side note Leah Brackett wrote the first draft for The Empire Strikes Back. It went through a lot of rewrites but the main story beats are in the final movie. She died before the film was completed. She has a writing credit for the movie. She was also a very prolific science fiction author. So Dean Martin's performance, Angie Dickinson's strong character as Feathers and the fact that Carlos is not a stereo typical Mexican and the strong script makes, for me, one of the best Westerns of all time. For a more nuanced Wayne performance see The Shootist with Lauren Bacall, Jimmy Stewart and Ron Howard. Also as one other commentator said the Searchers is one of John Wayne's most complex and, in many ways, a very unlikable character. And I'm done.
