    This is VERY important to check. I have an 05. Bought it with 18k miles. Checked it at around 26k and 4 out of 8 intakes where damaged. There is no way of knowing if there damaged unless you check, or have one fail and drop the valve. I heard on forums it was mainly 04's that where suspect and some 05's. I replaced the bad ones and I have 73k on the stock motor now with no other valve retainers going bad. If you buy an 04-06 do this immediately.

    Hello. I have a question. I have an 07 zx10r. I have exhaust gumming from my clutch case. Like where the oil fill is. It smells like exhaust. I hit my hand there and it is pulsing with the exhaust. Is that normal?

    Buy APE racing titanium retainers,valve train is the last place you wanna add mass.Gen 1 zx10r are great bikes,Kawi let the engineers build there bike.Should of consulted a mechanic at some point.Great bike,pain in the arse to wrench on.I love my 05.

    Does the problem occur only on high stress environment (track racing) or is it a susceptible to happen in normal road conditions as well with occasional highway speeding?

      My 06 dropped a valve when I was on the highway riding at 65mph.

    I've just had my 06 in for a check on this, it had 8k miles on and a weeping valve cover gasket. Asked them to check retainers and do a clearance check. Turns out 3 out of 8 on the intake had broken and ganked the top of one of the springs a bit too.
    All new gen 3 retainers and keeper, 1 new spring, all new bolts, washers and gaskets.
    Turns out the previous owner had it ported and polished to my delightful suprise.
    If I had the cash spare while it's in the shop, I get gen 3 cams put in, but I couldn't afford to get it mapped for the decat, porting and cams for a while so I'll come back to it at a later date.

      Very common issue, glad you caught it before it dropped a valve. Btw 04-10 zx10r intake ports have polished look to them from factory, check out my 06 to 08 cylinder head comparison video to have something to compare it to.

      @@everydayirace cheers brother, I havnt seen this supposed porting job but the guys I took it too are an ex BSB kawasaki team, so I'm hoping it is, he emphasised the porting and asked if I knew if this was a track bike or engine previously. I wouldn't know by looking or riding as all I knew was the thing was fucking mental. I'll go check out the video now and I'll let you know when I pick his brain tomorrow. 😎

      The way I check for broken retainers is by pulling the cams and inspecting them.

    I went the bulletproof route,...I got the heavy duty springs and Carpenter TI Retainers. I had 3 that were READY to drop,.but fortunately, I discovered them in time. Actually, if it weren't for me throwing in my Race Intake Cam, I probably wouldn't have known until it was too late. See ya on the .net sometime. Like your channel. I gotta do some research here soon,.......I did the gen2 gauge upgrade on my 05 and now the speedo has started to read 0 at all times! Ride safe my bro!

    • @everydayirace
      @everydayirace  8 лет назад

      Very nice, you spend the money upgrading instead of fixing a broken engine.
      Are you running a speedo healer with the gen2 gauge swap?

    • @bodymanruss518
      @bodymanruss518 8 лет назад

      yeah,.........and it worked for about a year,......but over the winter my Batt Tender got unplugged and my battery died, so Springtime I put in a brand new batt and haven't been able to get the speedo to read anything but 0 at anytime. I am gonna go out in the garage today, and see if it is bad wiring connection at the meter. Hope I can find the problem. I been thinking bout putting a gen3 gauge on my bike like you did,......I think it looks EVEN better than the 2nd gen.

    • @everydayirace

      2nd and 3rd gen clusters are one of my favorite. 1st gen was horrible, 4th and 5th gen isn't much better.

    inlet side was a tad smaller next 0 Almost Circular next was half n egg and then ground down ill normal, don't know how I'd share the damage pictures i have... but I'm going to do a vid when i change these retainers out and i'll show in vid how it looked on my 07 plate and obviously document this "rebuild/upgrade" this time

    Well I can now confirm that the 3rd Gen retainers are not the solution I was hoping they would be.
    Went through this 4 years ago. An intake dropped on my 06 and it was an absolute miracle but I got away with just a broken valve guide and bent valve. I pulled the head and replaced all the retainers with 3rd Gen parts. Hit the road with it again for 14,000KMs and decided I would do another early valve check since I had so much apart the last time..
    2 more broken retainers. 1 of them just BARELY hanging on. Another miracle that it didn't drop another valve.

    • @everydayirace
      @everydayirace  7 лет назад

      Dots are just markings from the factory. If you don't have any, you could have an upgraded retainers, they fixed the problem on 2007 bikes, they could've started sometime in 06 too. The main thing is no broken retainers, that means you're good to go, because if you had a bad set from the factory, they would've cracked.
      Btw what are your plans for the bike?

    • @WinstonBasset
      @WinstonBasset 7 лет назад

      There's no tracks near me so it's just a street bike. Up next is upgrading the suspension.

    • @PhilTV100

      @@WinstonBasset There must be a different that are not only factory marks. His 2006 have no dots and my 2006 have? There must be any differents. I think dots are the good ones (upgrade) and without dots are the bad 04 05 and some 06 retainers

    • @everydayirace

      extra 500 rpm isn't going to help on a stock engine. Anyways, my 06 didn't have a problem revving to 14k rpm with stock springs, and my boosted 05 has stock springs as well, but that doesn't mean that you can't upgrade your springs.
