Lea Solonga is literally a broadway ICON and Disney ICON. She may not be known for being a super high belter, but her quality of preformance is unmatched. If you want to hear her sound STUNNING and unlik how she usually does, react to her One hand One heart cover. It’s the just audio but trust-- it’s worth the reaction
I have been a die hard Lea Salonga fan half my life. The fact that she's a Filipina just makes me giddy to share some cultural history with such an iconic Asian woman. If I'm not mistaken she's also the first Asian woman to win a Tony award...
I was about to say this, but you got there first, so I don't have to. Basically, she was a big part of many millenials' Disney journey. And, yes, Travis, a vocal masterclass (and her name is pronounced the same way as Princess Leia in Star Wars)
Lea is a musical theatre GOAT. She participated in the 10th and 25th Anniversary concerts of Les Mis. And her I Dreamed a Dream... brilliant. And yes, she is most certainly a Disney Princess too
LOVE your reaction throughout this video. Yes, a masterclass. There is a reason the video has over 25 million views! I hope you do go down the rabbit hole and watch more Lea vids! Lea (pronounced LAY-ah) is from the Philippines, born 1971. She began performing at age 7 as a kid in a production of THE KING AND I. She has had a long, varied career: theater, film, TV, albums, and concerts. She became internationally known when she originated the leading role of Kim in MISS SAIGON on London at age 18. (The creators of the show had done a worldwide search for their leading lady and finally found Lea at age 17 and a lot of other original cast members in the Philippines.) She did the role in London and then on Broadway and won all the major awards for her performances: Olivier, Tony (first Asian actress to win), Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Theatre World Awards. Lea was the first Asian to play Eponine in LES MISERABLES on Broadway (she went into the show in 1993) and was asked to play Eponine in the LES MISERABLES 25th Anniversary Dream Cast concert in 1995 (the video you reacted to). Lea went into the LES MISERABLES Broadway revival as Fantine in 2007 and was part of the LES MISERABLES 25th Anniversary Concert as Fantine in 2010. I think Lea was one of the only performers to be in both anniversary concerts and playing different roles. Lea is the singing voice for Jasmine from "Aladdin" ("A Whole New World") and Mulan ("Reflection") - I think the only woman to voice two Disney princesses. Just some of the reasons that many Filipinos consider her a national treasure and that she put the Philippines on the map. Lea has tons of amazing videos, but here are just some of my faves. (I put in a bunch of duets because I think she sounds so beautiful singing with other people): --Discussing the first recording session of "A Whole New World" for "Aladdin" as well as a full recording by Lea and Brad Kane: ruclips.net/video/pi_Ocd9IALc/видео.html --Lea Salonga and Brad Kane - "A Whole New World" 23 years later: ruclips.net/video/TKzztvJeQjw/видео.html --Lea singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from LES MISERABLES 25th Anniversary concert (London 2010): ruclips.net/video/wHdtwKCGzZU/видео.html --Lea Salonga rehearsing "Still Hurting" for her Back To Before concert at The Allen Room, Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2013: ruclips.net/video/xSYtZRMFozc/видео.html --Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "Movie In My Mind" for the 25th anniversary gala of MISS SAIGON (London 2014): ruclips.net/video/bWys8rQ8EXI/видео.html. Rachelle Ann Go is a Filipina performer who has done a lot of musical theater in the Philippines and was Gigi in the West End and Broadway revivals. Lea encouraged her to audition for the revival of MISS SAIGON. --Lea and Josh Groban sing "The Prayer" during his concert in Manila 2019: ruclips.net/video/nqqjDr9KD1M/видео.html. This was Josh's concert in Manila on her 48th birthday. Lea had broken her leg the month before and cancelled most of her upcoming engagements, but since this was something short and didn't require travel out of the country, she kept this guest appearance. --Lea and Regine Velasquez musical medley, April 2020 (ignore the bubbles - avoiding copyright): ruclips.net/video/CiQS0hgrURk/видео.html. Regine Velasquez is called "Asia's Songbird" and considered Queen of the Belters in the Philippines. She is 10 months older than Lea (birthday April 1970) and has been working since the mid-80s. Most Filipino singers of the last 20-30 years consider Regine an inspiration (a la Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey - and Regine has sung the hits by all those women). Regine did an online birthday concert fundraising for a favorite charity of hers and asked Lea to duet with her, though they each recorded their parts separately in advance.
I saw Les Mis on Broadway about 4 times in the 1990s, and must’ve seen her each time. I didn’t know her name back then, but she was amazing. I can’t believe she’s 50 now.
I wore out the double CD set from the 10th anniversary concert. She is also the singing voice of Princess Jasmine and Mulan! Also in this same concert, Judy Kuhn is Cosette, and she is the singing voice of Pocahontas!
this is from the 10th anniversity concert of Les Mis in the Royal Albert Hall London. The whole concert is a masterclass. A little Fall of rain with Lea and Michael Ball as Marius broke me ^^
She is one of the best female singers I’ve ever heard and that includes legends like Elaine Paige and Keala Settle. Lea definitely has her diction like a machine gun accuracy and can do it at a mouse whisper or a full belt and still get it absolutely perfect !! A true Masterclass and one to always go and see whenever you can as live just takes it up a few levels !!! I first saw her on her debut in Miss Saigon playing Kim in London, her West End debut as well as the debut for the show too so tons of pressure all round and she hit it out the park !! She might have only been about 18-19 at the time but she is was fearless and powered her way through every emotion you could think of and by the time they hit my fave song The Last Night Of The World …. I was in tears !!! She had broken most of us by that point and her story was ours and she was pulling us along and willing for a positive ending for her and her son …. AMAZING !!! I’ve seen her a number of times since and she just keeps getting better all the time …… can’t say any more as I’m off to wipe the tears down and sink into the anniversary Box set for Miss Saigon that has her and Simon Bowman, her lead as Chris on that West End debut reunited for this special album and evening …… 😭🥲👏👏👏👏👌👌👌👌🍷🍷🥃🥃🎼🎵🎷🎷🎷🎷🎶🎶❤️❤️🐾❤️🐾🐾🐾🐾🥃🥃🏴🏴🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼NMHRK NMHRK NMHRK
She is my favorite female singer. She does the best performance of this number hands down. it's a singing lesson by one of the best. She was the first Filipina artist to perform this in the show (Les Mis). She did Reflection in Mulan and is the Princess in the original "Aladdin". I believe she is the only double Disney Princess. She was also the first Filipina artist to win a Tony for "Miss Saigon". Listen to a song called "Two Words" she sang to her husband at her wedding. Also her cover of "Someone Like You" and "Don't Cry for Me Argentina, and best of all "Movie in my Mind" from "Miss Saigon". Jim Hester
You were so right when you said, "Words cannot describe what we just listened to", or words to that effect. It doesn't matter how many times you may listen to this MASTERPIECE, your feelings will remain the same. As the video continues you are made aware (by your heart) that you are listening to greatness. I have made it my choice to tell everyone about this performance and in many cases I play it for them and, like you and I, they are stunned (another word you used which, if you could only use one word to describe what we heard, it would be 'stunning').. Thank you, Travis, for your heartfelt reaction.
This song sung by Lea Salonga really affects me it make me well up inside. I had the pleasure of hearing her live about a month ago in Canterbury England and WOW ! she blew us all away. An amazing talent & yes she sung for Mulan :)
I was watching Travis's face at 5:00 for his reaction when Lea really turns it up. There's a number of 'First reaction' vids on RUclips and it gets everyone that way. Incredible power for such a young-looking girl.
Lea is the very top of Broadway stars. Beginning with her starring role in Miss Saigon, everything she has done since is just perfection personified. She is very much known for her careful and clear diction as you noted. Also, the amount of emotion she puts into her performances is just amazing.
As everyone else has said she is a Broadway legend and Disney icon .. for Aladdin, Mulan singing voice, les mis, miss Saigon and many more Broadway roles.... she ihas been a Broadway star since 18...... she is also a voixe judge in te Philippines
You are correct: she was the voice behind Disney's Mulan and Princess Jasmine in the movie Aladdin. She is a recipient of two awards for being the star of the Broadway show "Miss Saigon": the Tony Award for Best Actress and the Lawrence Olivier Award. She is an international star.
Legend!! She's beyond AMAZING!!! I first saw her in Miss Saigon playing Kim...then again in Les Mis. Both times she was FANTASTIC!! Incredibly beautiful vioce. She also sings some Disney princess songs. Watch her in Miss Saigon she's moving!!
Great reaction Travis! Les Mis has been my fave musical since forever ❣️ This concert is amazing!!! The past few years, a newly written musical has become a BIG fave though. Hadestown. What a masterpiece in musicality, storytelling and casting 😲👏👏👏 Please react to something from Hadestown 🙏🙏🙏 A Tiny Desk Concert is a great intro to the musical with a few of the songs performed. Or try whatever you find that seems to be highly viewed.
No performer has ever affected me the way Ms. Leah Salonga has. It’s pure magic. It’s like a cake without the icing yet it is the best tasting and most delicious sweet you have ever tasted. I have never heard anyone tell a story the way she does when she performs. She is one of a kind really. Love her the most !
She was a complete unknown, and still a teen , when she won the search, they had for Miss Siagon! You should check her out singing in that! Yes, she sang Reflections , Mulan, and also i think , in Aladdin. She is so beautiful and has a simply gorgeous, rich voice! Vickie from SE Pa
You need to see more videos of Lea Salonga 😆 She is a force in musical theatre, not to mention the singing voice for 2 Disney princess: Jasmine and Mulan. Almost very vocal technique that you want to perfect can be learned from her. Huge respect for this talented woman 👏👏👏
So aside from Kim in Miss Saigon which deserves its own reaction. After playing Eponine in the 10 Anniversary Concert of Les Mis. She played the role of Fantine in the 25th Anniversary of Les Mis and SLAYED it. ruclips.net/video/wHdtwKCGzZU/видео.html
I love how crystal clear her voice is! Such a beautiful but sad song. The lyrics feel way too close to home for me! 🥲 Thank you for the great reaction! 🙂
Yes, she sung REFLECTION in the original Disney animated musicale film MULAN. She is also the original PRINCESS JASMINE in ALADDIN. She is also the original KIM in MISS SAIGON in both West End London and Broadway New York where she won the Best Actress in a musicale in London - The LAURENCE OLIVIER AWARD and the TONY AWARD in New York.
She is the singing voice of Mulan AND Princess Jasmine. She is also the original Kim of Miss Saigon. She is a Tony Award winner and an Olivier winner. She is the GOAT!
I'm leaving this comment not for the video creator because I'm sure he already knows by now, but for those coming here to watch the video. Salonga is now in her 50s, like me, and she started her career in Broadway when she played the role of Kim in "Miss Saigon," a role that she was cast in when she was 17, 18, and for which she won a Tony.
Lea Salonga is a damned goddess. This whole performance is beautiful. It's the Dream Cast concert for the 10th anniversary of the musical, and it has all the best performers of each part. Colm Wilkinson, Philip Quast, Ruthie Henshall, Lea Salonga, Michael Ball, etc. It's well worth a watch, even just on your own. (heh)
And oh man, if you're going to start doing musicals, I'd suggest finding more by Lea Salonga from the musical Miss Saigon, plus of course I have to request some Hamilton, but if you want just the mainly singing parts of it, I'd really suggest a double reaction of "Helpless" and "Satisfied" as they blend into each other and if you only did one, they wouldn't have the same emotional punch if you hadn't seen the other. There's also "One Last Time", "Hurricane" and "Burn" for good measure. "Defying Gravity" from Wicked is also good.
Dude, you have to watch the full 10th anniversary concert special of Les Mis (better than the 25th, imo). It is amazing! They cast their "dream cast." Yes, Lea ("Lay-uh") is a beast. She set the bar for Eponine.
Truly that performance is a masterclass! Any video of Lea singing is a masterclass really. She's got incredible singing technic and that is why she is PHENOMENAL. Please react more to her. Lea's performances are a feast to the ears!!! 💯 If you want more musical theater stuff from her, you can react to her concert performance of Don't Cry For Me Argentina from Evita through this link: ruclips.net/video/LLOnWWrGSaA/видео.html If you want a more recent performance, she sang Burn from Hamilton here: ruclips.net/video/_6QPUaWtLe0/видео.html
I am going to keep bugging you until you check out Kevin at age 17 at Carnegie Hall in a program called from the top. He plays the saxophone and you will learn a lot more about him. By the way he also speaks Mandarin. He is super smart as well as super talented!!!!!

Lea is a BEAST! She’s so good! And yes, she was the singing voice for Mulan as well as Jasmine in Aladdin!
She originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon at 18 and was stunning.
I have been a die hard Lea Salonga fan half my life. The fact that she's a Filipina just makes me giddy to share some cultural history with such an iconic Asian woman. If I'm not mistaken she's also the first Asian woman to win a Tony award...
She's the singing voice of Mulan and Princess Jasmine in Aladdin. So you have heard her before if you ever watched those
