  • In this little walkthrough I talk about Sequences. It is important to add elements of modulation and randomisation to keep a sequence interesting and dynamic over time. This can be achieved easily with STEPIC by Devicemeister.

Stepic is an awesome step sequencer, the only weak part I think is the chord functionality, since you don't hear the notes while building the chord and it offers no help to build them. It pairs well with Stochas (FREE) which has a better chord function (to me, by both sounding the notes out and having predefined chords which you can easily select Inversions from when entering them), and with its (up to 4) layers and poly note functionality at any step, goes some places that Stepic does not.

a couple of other devices in a similar vein for stochastic note generation are TATAT by K-devices (VST) and Stochastic Midi for m4l. But one of the best is the SIG (Stochastic Inspiration Generator) which is a eurorack module. Its a bit easier to dial in the note probability on the other devices but then you lose out on the added control over the octave jumps and the ability to ratchet (unless you then add additional devices to the chain).
i wish Stepic had a probability function for parameters other than the gate on/off. It would be useful to have the divider or octave change on a percent chance in addition to the gates.
and if they added outputs so you could route CV out from the modulation lanes, it would literally run every eurorack patch. currently using CV Tools after it to have it control eurorack oscillators, but then limited control of dynamics as stuck with just a gate out (so no velocity).

There is a quite similar open source plugin that can even do more called Stochas. It's from the Surge Synth dev team. If you don't know it already check it out, I think you might like it a lot. You can add weighted random notes, conditions (i.e. if a specific note is played in the current step, only a limited set of other notes may be played in the next one).

I love the tip for controlled randomness. Any sequencer that can do multiple steps with randomness could also make use of that tip. I also really like the idea of changing the step length for automation sequences without randomizing the order. I've seen tips for doing that for multiple pitch sequences but I don't like the potential combination of notes that can result from that, but it makes a lot of sense for parameter automation.

Thank you for your videos, Martin! Answering to your question on 8:00 - yes, there are other sequencers, where you can do these weighted random notes. Bitwig's standard arpegiator can do it. And the other thing is Polygrid, it's not a sequencer, but allows you to build your own in a modular way (generative if needed).

I guess in VCV Rack you could find a sequencer that allows for a randomization like this, well not exactly but similar. Actually to my opinion the sequencers in VCV (or rather: the VCV module repo) are its most intersting part, the sound is rather weak… but you can route MIDI out of it and control your favourite outboard synth.
