nothing to do with organizers they could not do anything about this if it starts rain all it takes is few minutes and normal safe dry road can be disaster touch of wheels anything and you are sliding forever
Damn it... Roglic and Evenepoel can't catch a break this Spring... they jjust have the worst possible luck :( I swear Pogacar has the highway wide open in front of him for the Tour at that point... :(
Why can't we have a yellow/red flag system like F1? Yellow flag, slow decent when it rains, breakaway gets their time gap at the top back. People will die with these endless horrible crashes. This has to stop.
To clarify, i mean that say there was a 1.30minute lead when the breakaway was at the mountain top, that is restored when the peleton is down safe aswell. So all parties just go down carefully and at the bottom the correct lead is restored
I understand the impulse to find someone to blame but I don’t think this crash was caused by aggressive riding and not sure there was much that could have prevented it. The road was just too slick. The peloton was taking the descent as slow as they could but you could see from the footage that they literally didn’t have the traction to stop on the decline.
this IS part of the sport, cycling is a risky sport and they all know it and do it willingly. nothing should have been neutralized either. It's not the breakaway fault for others crashing. Let them keep going and get the win and the leader's jersey. It's all politics to keep the big names in the top positions on GC.
In F1 they use different types depending on road status. Something to think about. Crashes in general 1) Better clothing 2) Less participants 3) Less communication distractions 4) etc
Goodyear actually released specific rain tires for cycling recently, they’re effectively Pro only at ~$600. I think we may see more of this type of thing, however it would be a logistics nightmare for teams as unlike F1, they don’t use the same wheel for every condition, so they would need to add an additional set of wheels with those specific tires to the team truck just in case. Which would be a minimum of 16 more sets of tires/wheels.
@@hansschotterradler3772 They won’t mandate anything. It’ll just be that teams who have specific rain tires will likely have an advantage in those conditions and it will force others to follow suit.
@@hansschotterradler3772But a rain tire would be worse in dry conditions than a normal one. Look at formular 1, they have much less grip in corners when it's drying up so they have to switch back asap. There is no perfect solution.
@@greniermatteo2905 Is that why ? Because it seemed to really only fall on the left lane where the surface is different. Looks like some sort of patch up job with only slick tar without the pebbles to make asphalt, hence the smooth shiny surface
I am wondering the same thing. Did someone spray soap on the road? I remember a few years ago, in the opening stage of the TDF, one of the sponsor floats was a laundry detergent company that was blowing soap bubbles out the back of the float. It was raining, and riders were going down on straight roads without warning.
That road looks to me like it was surface dressed some time ago. This is where they spray the road with tar, then sprinkle chippings over the tar & roll them in. Over time, the chippings can come loose and get swept away by the traffic. This leaves behind a surface that is just smooth tar. The resulting surface is extremely smooth, very slippery when wet, and also has the reflective properties of a mirror. It happened on Lenton Lane in Nottingham a few years ago. A few months after the dressing was applied, all the chippings were piled up in the gutter and the bit the traffic drove on was as smooth as a baby's bum. As well as having zero friction, in low sun, or at night with car headlights, you were completely blinded by the reflection off the road surface.
Irresponsible of the race organizers to not protect the riders. If they know the road conditions are so poor, so slick, and there are fast descents, they need to postpone. To endanger the riders like this is unethical.
Looks like new road surface and it's wet. Problem, the oils in the tar react with the water bringing it to the surface. These guys are going very fast on thin wheels.
Does the medics on the teams use some types of spray or applications on the bruises on the cyclists to destroy the bacteria from the asphalt on the road
Many country roads in France have only around 10cm of asphalt past the white line on the road, so there's no typical "shoulder." Then there's grass and then, worst of all, a deep trench another 40cm over. Many of the riders went into this trench and crashed really hard. Shame.
How could one permit race on such surface? Race committee is supposed to check roads used for race? Possibility of rain also could be predicted by looking up weather forecast.
I think they should cancel the rest of the Dauphiné And probably the tour de france also or better yet.... Let's cancel the rest of the racing season! Because someone could get hurt You know.
Super stiff carbon fiber bicycles and wheels don't offer much of a compliant ride. It doesn't absorb road irregularities as much as steel framed bicycles, so crashes will happen.
It would have been a miracle if Primoz escaped it 😢
Not even possible, but he is a judo master
Wow. That was just a blink of an eye and then everybody had been on the ground. That was so scary.
Pogacar will benefit the most on TDF when Jonas, Remco, and Primoz suffer from crashes this year.
Just put an asterisk on the TDF winner this year.
The same happened when Tadej got hurt last year. Thr steering wheel always turns the other way eventually.
With the super high speeds involved, the organizers need to be extremely aware of road conditions.

There's too much pressure on the riders. Everybody is always riding to the limit.

My thoughts is having wet tires and inter tires if it should go on rather then the flag when watching the vid

That's kind of difficult in cycling because it is not a closed circuit, you travel across regions with different weather conditions.

This is ridiculous; perhaps they should simply require rain tires at all times. Or mandate a certain tire spec that works better in these conditions.

What the hell is going on, did someone spread oil on the road surface
Indeed there is an airport not far away, with the rain the oil comes up and the road becomes an ice rink

Disc brakes
Every crash is Primoz Roglic between 😮
You can see clearly that some riders fall just because they touch the brake a little harder than normal and the disc brakes stop the bike roughly.
Wishing you all a quick recovery...🇿🇦
Fresh greasy tarmac in combination with water makes it like icy road.
17 percent descent, oil, rain, 90 kph. Last man standing. This sport is about pain.

This is professional bike racing. Pros take on the risks associated with the conditions. They can elect not to start

Debride, irrigate, antibiotic cream and protective layer.
One was in the sewerage..band aid please
Scrub with brush, iodine and antibiotic cream

Fresh rain on asphalt draws out the petroleum and oils until it rains enough to wash it off.....thus a very slick surface
Massive!!! Asfalt...
Polka dot cyclist did admirable job avoiding riding over Roglič's palm.
That was not Roglic. That crash occurred in the breakaway
A bit strange to see littering at 2:25 by a Visma rider. Any comments on that?
They were in a designated area for refuse. Organizers have people (volunteers, I think) who clear those areas once the riders are through.

how can you lay that kind of asphalt there, unbelievable.

They all commence to wreckin, as they say in NASCAR.

At this point it’ll be news when primoz doesn’t fall on a stage
It seems like pros are able to sustain crashes like this with relatively few injuries. Is it because they’re so light?
