They now have two models of this same radio. The newer one has no trim pots on the board. But it does 12 meters in addition to 11 and 10 meters when you jumper it right. Of course since you made this video FM CB is now legal in the US. Great little radio. I have the old model for CB and the new one for my ham bands. It’s wattage out and receiver sensitivity is almost flat across the bands. It is certainly worth the $60 price!
So, I can get these for $49.00 new. I was thinking about picking one up to use as a 10 Meter beacon to replace my aging, modified Cobra that I'm currently using. The question is how much true output, unmodulated power?
@@Possumliving WOW! Thanks for the quick reply! 8 W dead-key sounds perfect. I've been using a modified Cobra 142 for the past three years at about 6 Watts. The Cobra occupies too much space. For 49 bucks and free shipping, this seems like a good option. I'll go ahead and order one. Thanks again for the reply, I couldn't find the info anywhere. 73
Regarding the explanation of 10m FM starting around 3:00, 29.6 is primary calling frequency with 29.5 as a secondary, and there are tons of repeaters on all four outputs: 29.62, 29.64, 29.66 and 29.68, with their inputs all down 100 kHz. There are even a few inconsiderate operators trying to split channels on 29.61/63/65/67, but I don't usually hear them. But without CTCSS and transmit offset capabilities, there's little ham use for this radio on 10m without SSB.
It is limited, no doubt about it. But with FM simplex on a few frequencies and AM on a few more frequencies (starting on 29.000), I think it's worth the $60 shipped that it cost me.
So I just bought one but my question is how do you use say 29.695, from what I've tested it uses the HB band Id presented in back of manual, and it only goes up to 28.395 ? I'm confused
In the default out of the box 10 Meter mode, channel bank HI is 20 channels from 29.600 to 29.695. If you desolder OP2 and solder OP1 it follows the same frequency set as the Stryker 10 bank export radios, where the top frequency is 30.105. In that mode, bank LE channel 3 is 29.685 and 4 is 29.705. .695 is one of the skipped frequencies and since this radio doesn't have a plus 10 function (although I wouldn't be surprised if there is a mod to add it), you can't get there. The closest you can get is 29.700 which would transmit outside the amateur band. But it can reach the commonly used 10M FM frequencies; for example bank IE channels 35 through 40 are 29.605, .615, .625, .635, .645, .655 which when used with the minus 5 toggle gets you .600, .610, .620, .630, .640, .650 all of which are common FM freqs. If you want the full channel set and no skipped 10M frequencies, a workaround is to add a couple of SPST toggle switches to the case and connect them to ground or open OP1 and OP2. That way you can toggle between the two modes.
Whats a dummy load? Im just starting out in radio world. I bought a uniden bearcat handheld scanner , a baofeng bf-f9v2+ handheld with a bigger antenna and a magnetic antenna for the roof of my truck when using it in there. I have to still take the test so i cant talk on it yet. Also have a cobra cb in truck with a huge antenna that cost more than the cb lol and a red devil power microphone. And added one of those little meters to it. Just learning as i go. Dont no anyone in the hobby. But great video thanks for telling about your knew radio. Sounds like it does alot of different things. Can you make contact with other countries with it if you did that soldering thing to that chip? Thanks for sharing 😁
A dummy load is just a high power, non-inductive resistor that you use instead of an antenna for transmit testing. All it does is present a 1:1 swr and absorb all the power so it doesn't transmit on the air. Since it cannot be 100 percent effective, enough signal gets out to hear it on a receiver that is in the same room. As for making contacts with other countries, it will do that right out of the box during band openings. One of the SSB radios would be better for that though, since far more people are on SSB than AM.
@@Possumliving thank you for taking the time to explain the dummy load to me. I really appreciate it. Thats cool you can talk to other countries right out of the box. Thanks for the teachings 😁 have a great weekend .
If you long press the rfg button it cicles between "E" and "P". Any idea what's that? The second letter on the band selection screen changes accordingly. Any clues? Thx

Thanks! I didn't know they had a new version; I'll have to check it out.
Awww, that lil radio is cute like you!
It's amazing for the minimum cost of this radio that it has SSB. I wish the Stryker SR 94 HPC and SR 25MC had SSB.
This one doesn't have SSB. AM and FM only. It's still amazing for the price, though.

I still mess with the 11meter cb band .
AM, SSB or both?

This radio can't do the 10 meter calling frequency of 29.600 Mhz but can come close to 29.605 Mhz.
It has a -5 control to get you there.
@@Possumliving In that case, I'll get one and try it out. Thanks.
@Johnm Hold the RFG control for more than 2 seconds until the display shows "P." To revert, do the same until it displays "E."
Fcc is processing FM legality as I saw this in 2021 believe it has totally passed and implementation is beginning
Yeah, I've been watching that. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Fm is legal now

It's a 5khz function.
@ pardon my ignorance. What is it for?
Main purpose would be on 10m since hams typically don't use a 5khz offset like Cb band
@ got it! Thanks for the replies!! 73!
Where can you parts for it ?
I got a Lincoln 2+
I've thought about getting one. How do you like it?
@@Possumliving I love it. I use it for my base. Works great
Anyone figure out how to get the scan function to work?
I think you hold the up or down button on the mic for a couple seconds.
