I've never thought to us hash browns on top of a cottage pie before, this looks so lush! Definitely will have to make this soon! Love the videos as always Adam! :) x
Never had hash browns on the top of cottage pie but I have used potato croquettes, or tatty tots to our American friends. I like the idea of the hash browns. I also sometimes use mashed vegetables, like swede and carrot or a garlicky mashed cauliflower. Not quite as cheap and convenient but very delicious. Thanks Adam xxx
i always leave the beef in it's container and break it up with a spatula (it makes it easier in the confined space as it has less space to move around unlike the frying pan).
I first came across this conundrum years ago on an episode of kitchen nightmares and Gordon was slating someone's shepherd's pie cos it had beef. Needless to say I was very confused 🤣
I am making this tonight! Although I couldn’t find hashbrowns so I’m using tater tots. I can’t wait! Thank you again for always feeding us with delicious and budget friendly recipes 😘💕💕💕
It’s funny, but several times while I’ve been wondering what to do for dinner, you bring out a new recipe! This looks really good - can’t wait to try it.
You could use instant mash, frozen mash, pastry, dumplings as well. I've made a version of this too topped with thinly sliced potatoes then baked. Enjoy 😚
Delicious as usual Adam. Right don't judge me cuz my kids love my cottage pie but I do add a tin of baked beans to my minced beef mix it makes it just more filling and like I say the kids love it 😁
I was going to say frozen mash too, could always leave in fridge overnight to defrost, saves on using electricity with the microwave, plus it'll probably cook quicker in the oven than than hash browns.
How about a Hotpot topping - Microwave a large unpeeled jacket potato, then slice into 1/2” rounds to lay on top of the cooked mixture. Spray a little veg oil over and a pinch of paprika. Brown under the grill for 5 mins.
Alternative topping: root veg mash. Use swede or cauli (or both) and make a batch for freezing because there'll be more than needed for this dish. These veg are often really cheap* and with dishes like this, they pass muster easily - the cheese and the beefy sauce make the mash little more than a filling flavour conveyor. *Look for those packs of roasting veg some supermarkets do.
Hi Adam,in Lidl you can buy from the freezer what’s called pomme noisettes or for the likes of you and me potato balls. We love them and I think they would go lovely with this dish as they are softer than hash browns ❤❤
I am glad you have cleared up - perhaps - the English pronunciation (has its own different ways of pronoucing it) of the English word 'Shire' to our American cousins as it is attached to areas or parts of the British Isles. Pleas apply your magic to Kirkudbright and almost every Welsh name. I was going to mention that Hash Browns and similar are probably more expensize weight for weight than Potatoes but you emphasised the Energy parameter. I have Potato (frozen of course) in place of the Hash Browns which are important to me for my breakfast. 🙂

Hello from America! Just found your channel. Yes, we usually use the term Shepherds pie for the beef one. Lamb is very expensive here. I love the idea of hash browns on top! I never would have thought of it. The area I come from calls it "wusta-sher" sauce.

I’m a big fan of cottage pie (from young age) and I have just started cooking this myself for my family at least once a week.😊 Everybody enjoys including all seven grandchildren. I add tomato purée and marmite to final mix, tastes great. I mash (salted) potatoes with butter, Philadelphia cream cheese and a dash of milk, layered on top of meat mix. Delicious eh. Mike P. The hash browns as a topping is a work of genius! Gonna make this tonight using lentil bolognese ive got in the freezer, with grated vegan cheese on top.

made this for dinner tonight , looking forward to having it with the hash browns on top , having 2 naughty yorkie puds on the side and some broccolii yum yum , i cooked my onions first as i like some colour on them then add the meat etc

Hi Adam. It's Michael in Cyprus. My wife and I tried this dish yesterday. What a brilliant twist using Hash Browns. We really did enjoy it and will be having it again that for sure.
Good looking meal . Wow love the idea of hash browns on this, I sometimes mash up cauliflower cheese and put that on top, especially if I'm making a veggie version for my friend, I find mash a bit of a faff to be honest and nearly always buy ready made from the supermarket lol I know I know, don't judge me! :)
I often make a batch of Cottage or Shepherd pies, then eat one and freeze the rest. (My other half is a Pescatarian). But like most, I have never tried hash browns. (I usually use frozen mash.) So, onwards and upwards, hash browns, here we came. What a great idea young Adam! PS. I often get frozen ones from Aldi for only 75p! That, half a small tin of processed peas @ 37p per small tin, and some onion gravey granules. Yum!
hello adam!! hash browns are a great touch! good video--i like to add crushed crisips to the top as well!! I'd chomp that whole thing :) Was your week terrible with the extra traffic and people in town? did you visit the queen for her last hurrah? Think charles will do a good job? As you know--i had a stroke...makes cooking difficult....
Hope you are on the mend now bro! I didn't get to visit the Queen lying in state unfortunately, but was lovely to see so many paying their respects. The biggest thing I am hoping for with Charles is his push towards combating climate change. He has been a huge influence for change for many years, so hopefully he can help.
Some good ideas, I would never have thought of using hash browns in that way, and have put my cogs into motion! In times like now, I think that the pedants can go and @£&% themselves. If it tastes good and at least makes a passing resemblance to the 'traditional' that is good enough. I would even consider using 25% pork or other 'mince' to reduce the cost. I use low, or no salt stock cubes as you can add an extra cube to compensate for any lack of meatiness when also increasing the vegetable percentage. I never add any thickener, preferring it as it is, so would be reluctant to use gravy granules. I have family members with an aversion to garlic, so I started adding an extra onion, which has the advantage over garlic of bulking out, I haven't tried it, but possibly sweetcorn and your nemesis mushrooms chopped finely could 'bulk' too. As for mash, I usually do 2.5 kg at a time, the capacity of my largest pan, and freeze any excess. They re-heat superbly if you add just a little milk otherwise they can be a little dry. Unless you wish to mash in batches, I would strongly recommend that you invest in a potato ricer.
Agree Neil, it's all about doing the best with what we have right now. Thank you again for the suggestions, and yes potato ricers are amazing, I love mine
LOVE hash browns! 😍 As an American, what are gravy granules? The closest I can think of is bouillon granules, maybe tossed with corn starch or tapioca powder, but I really don't know if that's similar to what you use. Also, I love the French accent comments between the cooking segments. Very Monty Python-esque to my mind. 😍❤️😍
honestly potatoes are cheaper than hash browns where I am. The price of 1 frozen hash brown would buy me a large sack of potatoes. The expensive part is the butter and cream, but I usually substitute them for a bit of the boiled potato water and whole eggs
this isnt just a money saving hack but using hash browns is also a massive time and effort saving hack especially when iv just come in from work

I'd love to cook this, but I'd have a couple of problems doing so:
1. I've got an electric cooker, which has a separate griller, (i.e., not in the oven, but directly underneath the hob), but there's no way I could possibly fit the baking dish under the grilling element, due to a serious lack of space in the tiny cavity provided), and the oven itself has no upper (or grilling) element.
2. None of the frozen hash browns available at my local supermarket are the same (or similar) triangular shape as those ones you got from Lidl. My solution to this problem might be to use something we Australians call *_"Potato Gems,"_* which are very similar to something that Americans call *_"Tater Tots."_* (I don't know if you have anything similar in the UK, but I imagine you probably do), and maybe these could be used to cover the top completely. They could easily be arranged in such a way as to fill in all the gaps, which might help to reduce the amount of gravy leaking up through the top. Cost-wise, they are comparable with hash browns, at least they are in Australia.
I'd be interested to have your opinion on my proposed solution to Problem #2! 🙂
It's funny because when I was coming up with this recipe I'd considered tater tots. The only reason I switched to hash browns is because they are much more readily available here in the UK.
