They get paid many times more than the poor people of Nepal. There are also sherpa owned companies that underpay their fellow countrymen just as much and are even worse if it comes to security and good order.

He was known to be in fair condition, but would likely be losing a few digits on one hand to frostbite. She was kind enough to take my call, but expressed no love of her mate’s lust for adventure.

Knowing when to turn back because of unsafe conditions. Recognizing your body is on the brink of exhaustion and turning around even if the summit is just 300 meters away has everything to do with experience and awareness. Not to mention the countless other examples I could use. Nobody can control an avalanche. But experience will teach you to recognize hazards that are within your power to overcome.

Mountaineers climb not for recognition. When it takes every ounce of your being to reach the top, that is when we truly feel alive. It’s not selfish, it’s doing what we love to do. Mountaineers climb, Race car drivers drive, Test pilots fly, Astronauts go to space. I could keep going on and on about things that people do that put their lives in danger. People put their lives in danger every single time they get in their vehicles because you never know when you’re going to get in a deadly car accident.

It doesn't sound like the 1st lady needed rescued the 1st incident. And the 2nd when she broke her ankle, it sounds like she got herself down (probably with help.) You've gotta be able to aid in your rescue. I don't think it sounds like she's inexperienced or a risk. Serac's fall, ppl trip or fall. There are so many that shouldn't be on the mountain, but idk if she qualifies. And yes, the Sherpas are the heros. I hope that becomes more well known. It's ridiculous that 1 client requires 3 sherpa to ascend. I don't count that as much of an accomplishment. Ppl who climb solo or with a partner who they share duties with earn more of my respect

  • @MshAhmxiO1

Sherpa is synonymous with expert mountaineer guide. Seems ignorant to impose a judgement on the woman (re: comments). Any professional that we hire like a surgeon, professor etc we might respectfully say "my ____" with implied respect. Also she would not want to name the hired expert who left her in a precarious life/death situation, showing reserve. People are so quick to assume without "knowing". It's a good thing to broaden our quick judgments with other perspectives imo. FYI The Nepal government collected $5.08 million in revenue from Everest alone spring 2023 climbing season. Let's hope improvements, to counteract negative impacts, will continue through calls to specific needed action.

I watched a documentary about the sherpas recently. It was suprising how much infrastructure the sherpa have in place to make it easier and safer for the hundreds of climbers to make the climb. They have many ladders permently placed across dangerous crevis's and steep slick areas to make it easier and hopefully have fewer deaths. There are ladders and also ropes permently placed in the most challenging areas. The brave climbers who where the first or very early climbers if Everest had none of the infrastructure when they made the climb. This is now adventure tourism and people shouldnt have to die to try to save them... because of their desire to feed their inflated ego

It should be supervised and manned throughout the day/night and closed during snow storms. If anyone is gonna rent the mountain out, they should pay a small monthly rent for it.
