That was epic! Amazing!!!
Thanks! :) Cheers for watching.
Completely agree that Rock Hunter is a great film ,unappreciated because it's long out of print and never airs on TV. It was a favourite of Jean Luc Godard whose characters often talk direct to the camera like Tony Randall does. It's also a brilliant satire on advertising, looking forward to Mad Men whose writers must have seen it I'm sure.
Yeah, it's a crying shame that the film isn't available readily and that this edition of it is out of print. Great film, really really surprised me!
At 1:07:31 you used almost the identical words that William Wyler said to Billy Wilder at the time of Lubitsch's death. Billy Wilder said to Wyler "how sad, no more Lubitsch", and Wyler replied: "worse, no more Lubitsch films". I find it a sweetly cinical/bittersweet statement that would fit perfectly, ironically, in a Lubitsch or even a Wilder film!
The man for me was a genius. I have little familiarity with his silent movies, even if I saw "The doll" some time ago and absolutely fell in love with it, I remember I found it a unique movie, and you made me even more eager to see his other silents.
I have seen, however, a lot of his talkies, and oh my god, I can't recommend them enough. Yes, they are obviously a lot less crazy and surreal of his silent movies (based on my viewing of "The Doll" and the excerpts you showed in the video), but if one might think that, being "talky sophisticated comedies", they are films less cured on the directorial/stylistic respect, this person couldn't be further from the truth.
To be or not to be, Ninotchka, The shop around the corner, Trouble in Paradise (these four are his masterpieces, in my opinion), Design for living, Heaven can wait, ecc., are precious gems both for their brilliant and ingenious screenplays (that are always far ahead of their time and deliciously mischiveous) but also for their delightful visual aspect.
Great video, Luke! Sorry for the long comment, but Lubitsch is simply one of my absolute favourites.
I love this, and it has encouraged me to get watching my collection too 😊
Thanks! Happy watching.
Great video and quite inspirational; makes me want to get back into Master of Cinema. If i recommended one Lubitsch it'll be Ninotchka.
Thanks! :) I'd love to see all of his films, I think. I might have to look around and see what's available in HD.
Hey, had a good time watching this, didn't mind the length of the video at all👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching :)
Fantastic watching thanks 😊 Luke. I need to get into my Lubitsch set after watching that. Really wetted my appetite.
If you haven't already got round to them the two early universal sets have some great silent films I know you're going to like.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy the Lubitsch films, I'm still thinking about them. As for the Universal sets, you may or may not see them make an appearance in Part II...
Lubitsch in Berlin set is fantastic, just wish the edition was a bit more extravagant than a standard amaray
Agreed, the quality of the films are well worth a more lavish physical package.
I know I shouldn’t be laughing at you deciding to rip all 16 Blu-rays but, here I am
Laugh away sir...
