I bought one of these a week ago. My 120lb girlfriend can use it to split soft rounds without much fuss and is far easier on her shoulders than a maul or hatchet. It goes through knotty soft wood easy too. And it works fine for chipping around large hard wood rounds as well. For $25-$30 this thing is an easy investment. (Partially bought because of this reasonable review ya did)

I'll be buying one for myself. On some knotty wood, my splitting maul will chip wood away at the knot instead of splitting through it. The slide hammer will go through the knot area for a full length split. Also, your idea of 'keep it for a couple quick splits' makes a lot of sense. Thanks again!

I just bought a 10ton hydrolic like yours at your feet there, last month, but will definitely buy one of these units you demo'd here. I usually buy my wood but have started collecting discards. I've used axes, and a maul but this tool looks like my next go to. I'm 66yrs old with multible joint injuries. I thumbed up at 7:00mins, and really appreciated your comentary at the 19:00min mark. At first I though your video was gonna be too long but was worth the time watching. Thanks.

Have it by the fire pit and if you need to spilt a piece or two of fire wood or a round or two, you don’t have to get the maul or wedges everything you need is in a single tool. Regardless of whether you use this device or a splitting axe, he demonstrates the correct way to attack a big round. By peeling the edges off, you are going with the grain instead of against it. This technique even works well when splitting gum.

Our only source of heat was two wood stoves that my brother and I were responsible for getting the wood split and stack in the summer and keeping the stoves lit and going in the winter. So I’m happy you noticed the technique. If you look through this comment thread you’ll see a comment from my brother who said “these would have been nice to have when we were kids”. That’s because my dad had us splitting wood with railroad spikes that we could get (back in the day) while walking down the tracks. I wouldn’t split a cord of wood with this tool, but I keep one out at my wood pile. It’s handy and convenient. If I have a round or 3 to split instead of going to the barn and getting wedges and sledges, I’ll just use this. Thanks for the comment. Have a Merry Christmas.
I have this tool out by my wood pile. I use it to split rounds when I get home from work and only have 15 or 20 minutes of time to throw at splitting wood. It’s a single tool so I can just grab it ,start spitting and stay upright in one spot with very little bending. Plus I don’t need to aim I can just put the wedge were it needs to go.
I bought one of these a few years ago and it only took about two minutes to realize that this thing was going back to where it came from.a splitting maul or maybe a good Judi chop would be ten times better 🙄
Well I was splitting a green Black Cottonwood round, which is a hard wood. I’ve used it on knotty Fir and it seems to work fine. This isn’t a tool I’d use if I had a lot of wood to split. But if I had 3 or 4 rounds big or medium and didn’t want to drag a bunch of tools out, or swing a maul. This is a good grab and go tool. For 20 dollars it’s a good deal.
It doesn't work worth a hoot on hickory or red oak. I tried it but now about the only thing I use it for is breaking the bead on 4 wheeler and lawnmower tires.

The pipes seem have plenty of play between them and don't need to be lubricated... Adding oils or grease will only attract saw shavings and dirt which will accumulate inside the unit and likely be a PIA down the road. Maybe a "dry" graphite lube would be better, but I still don't see any advantage on a loose fit. I think sanding/smoothing/polishing the finish on the splitting wedge and then coating it with a long lasting Teflon based automotive wax (rather than a furniture dusting spray) would make the wedge slice like butter and make a really noticeable difference, as that is the only real "friction" within this design.
A safe alternative, but not for me....Give me my 10 ton mechanical splitter like you have in the background. Split big rounds into quarters, then put on my HF 5 ton electric to finish up. I agree, work smarter not harder...I am still splitting and burning fire wood at 73, learn more every year! HA HA

You could just grab this one tool , split split the rounds and be done. I know I really enjoy splitting and stacking wood so I hope your still splitting wood 83 or even 93. Thank you for watching.
Seems like a huge waste of time. But i can see a benefit, if someone is too old or has an injury and cant swing an axe or a maul with wedges. This just looks like it takes way too much time just to split one small piece. That log could have been split im a few seconds with a good splitting axe.
After 20 cords of wood you will visit the orthopedic surgeon for repetitive strain disorder, or fusing of the wrist. Buy a log splitter, it's cheaper than the surgeon.

If you could swing a maul it would pop that short straight grain wood with one hit instead of twelve whacks with the slide hammer
A heavier hammer on the slide and a taller slide would probably make a big difference. Larger for the men and smaller for the women and children.
