Spielberg was interested in doing an animated film version of Cats in the 1990's for his short-lived animation studio Amblimation. However, after the back-to-back failures of the movies under Amblimation (only three were made, 1991's An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, 1993's We're Back! A Dinosaur Story, and 1995's Balto), the studio went defuncted in 1997 along with the animated Cats movie. Had Spielberg made the Cats animated movie, I feel that it could have saved the animation studio. At least it would have been a thousand times better than the 2019 Tom Hooper movie that we got in 2019. But there's always the 1998 direct to video film that Universal made.
I always liked how just when the old and unloved Grizabella has hit rock bottom, the kindness and innocence of Jemima, being the youngest kitten of the tribe, is the one to first show compassion and forgiveness, followed by the older kitten Victoria in taking initiative to welcome Griz back into the tribe. This is what I'd love to see Cats as: a full-length animated film where they really are quadruped felines. You did brilliant with this short animation that captured the spirit of the musical in a whole different way. ❤
This is insanely good, and deserves WAY more views than it has. Absolutely fantastic, and it is such a shame that they never adapted the musical in a style such as this.
Ugh!! Jemimas voice always gets me!! You animated her so well!! She’s my favourite of the cats. She’s so cute and sweet. And her being the youngest kitten, she’s unbiased and curious and it warms my heart!
I just saw the youth version of this musical and I almost cried watching the actors sing the song. Both my cousins were in the musical. My family were all impressed.
ohhh, this hit me square in the heart. Victoria coming in at the very end to stretch out and headbutt Grizabella is such a beautiful interpretation of what happens in the musical. gosh....ive been a CATS fan since i was just a wee lad. i got to see it at our local civic theatre, and that absolutely cemented it as my favourite musical (the lion king is up there too). but when the recent movie came out, i was horrified. this was nothing like the beautiful choreography and costume and makeup design that i knew from the musical. it was almost like a parody, framed as a genuine attempt. it was disgraceful to this musical that holds such a special place in my heart. but this.... this healed a little part of me that the recent movie had all but stomped out. thank you. this was beautiful.
This is so beautiful. Excellent work and gorgeous motion. The character designs are amazing, you can really tell who is who. I love your art, thank you, and please continue creating.
While I understand that adapting this musical into a feature film would be no walk in the park because the musical doesn’t tell much of a story. It’s really a series of different songs and dances with a little hint of a story. So while that works on stage, not so much on film. But recently I watched the 1973 feature film version of Godspell. As I observed, it too doesn’t tell much of a story. It was really a series of musicalized versions of parables from St. Matthew’s Gospel but toward the end it briefly retells the Passion. Whether you enjoyed the movie or not is your opinion, but I think what made it work on film was that it used a framing device. After a short prologue, the actor that was first in the role of John the Baptist, pops up in certain areas in New York City and asks a selection of people to join in the Baptism. The people decide to leave their ordinary responsibilities and then go to Central Park for the Baptism. After that the entire city is empty until the end. What if a movie version of Cats used a concept from Song of the South. Try to picture it; the movie starts in live action and an old timer, possibly Old Possum, telling the different poems to a child. The different stories would be told in 2D animation. Anyone else thinks that this concept could work? What are your two cents
I find the lip-sync to be a little off at times, but other than that this is very well done. You know, the 2019 movie would've gotten much less backlash if it was more like this.
this is BEAUTIFUL. absolutely stunning, from the animations to designs to the direction of the camera. thank you for giving cats fans a tiny little taste of heaven
This was just beautiful! The artwork and animation was just pure gold and I loved seeing all the cats' reactions and interactions! I would love to see more like this from the musical! Pure gold
Who are all the 'background' cats depicted? I THINK I'm seeing: First cutaway: Jennyanydots, The Twins (had to look up their names but Coricopat and Tantomile it looks like), Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffeles, and Munkustrap Second: Demeter and Bombalurina (maybe?), Bustopher Jones, not sure on the two hiding kittens. Third: Cassandra, Skimbleshanks, Mungojerry and Rumpleteazer Hard to do in the wide shot but I am pretty sure I see Victoria (the white kitten) and the sleepy cat could be old Gus
It's Plato in the first cutaway with Tugger and Mistoffelees rather than Munkustrap. Munkustrap is later beside Old Deuteronomy. In the very wide shot, I think Gus and Jellylorum are in the top right. Victoria is definitely the white cat. I think Tumblebrutus and Pouncival are the two similar looking cats in the circular windows(?). The black cat is potentially Exotica. And not sure who the cat in the top left would be, or whose back of the head we're seeing lol
Found this video while watching a stream about these two song artists beefing. I'm so glad I did, because that stream was stressful. Btw your art is super smooth and detailed, I love it alot ❤️
Yoyoyoyo Tää on vitun kova!! Like woah, män, muistan ku piirsit viel jtn animekoirii ja nyt teet jo tämmöst taidet like hhaaa... Oot sä nii kova äijä pippe
0:41 The smile on Grizabella’s face when Jemima acknowledges and sings with her... It's so touching
confession. the original musical never made me cry. the way you portrayed everyone else beginning to listen to her has me BAWLING
oh nooo!! But also thank you!! 🥺💕
This is what the film adaptation should've been! An amazingly well made animated film!
Same with all Broadway musical
Fun fact there was a planned 2D adaptation of the cats musical, you can find the concept art online

Love so much, this was my childhood comfort musical. Love the Tugoffelees pairing too. ;D
Thank you so much!! Also yes!! It was a must >:)
What we got: Rebel Wilson improv and James Cordon crushing his balls.
What we could have gotten:
This is insanely good, and deserves WAY more views than it has. Absolutely fantastic, and it is such a shame that they never adapted the musical in a style such as this.

The way the sunlight creeps in behind her. GORGEOUS 😭
This version always gives me the chills. Elaine Paige sounds phenomenal.
I just saw the youth version of this musical and I almost cried watching the actors sing the song. Both my cousins were in the musical. My family were all impressed.
I will never get over Helen Massey's angelic voice. Also always knew your art style would look gorgeous animated!
Thank you!! 🥺

The two hiding kittens are most likely Electra & Etcétera 🐈🐈
@@alejandrocervantes3624 I can see that!
I'm pretty sure at 1:23 from left to right: Munkustrap, Old Deuteronomy, Victoria, unknown.
@@KeiFoxThe unknown one may be Alonzo. Mainly because of the black patch over his eye.

I'm going to try one day to convince Andrew. Lloyd webber to make an animated version of cats
Is Fox Fires 2 coming out yet? Not pressuring you just asking
Cats should have been a 2D animated movie like The Lion King.
I thought this was a Warriors animatic at first 😋
What we could have had.
if they use real cat or animation cat like this in the movie.. i totally cry.. cat have the saddest expression ever
