I was visiting family in Ireland about a week ago and heard this on the radio. I've always loved Irish folk music and I thought that this sounded beautiful. I forgot to take note of the song and have just spent about an hour searching for it. Now i'm probably going to listen to it for the rest of the night!
unreal song, the coronas wont release a single of this song because they do not want to have financial gain of a song so good that is not their own,..top respect,.any other group would be milking it for all its worth
I'm really looking forward to hearing these lads in 10-15 years. They are good now but strike me as a band that will be utterly, utterly brilliant with a little bit of age to them.
Paul bradys version is orders of magnitude better than this. While this guy can somewhat sing, his voice sounds whiney to me. Personally, I don't think the song suits him as I feel he doesn't relate to the words at all.
Tá The Coronas thar cionn! Tá brodúil orm leis an Coronas, tá siad banna ceoil go hand mhaith agus cheap me go bhfuil gach duine in Éireann brodúil freisin. Maith thú Coronas, maith thú. :)
Absolutely class ... im not saying its any better or worse than paul brady's version as both acts bring their own unique style to the song .... it drives me mad that these lads get no recognition outside of ireland !!!
Yea....this has a hauntingly beautiful rawness about it that tugs at the heart strings. It's really the 'mist that does be on the bogs in the morn' like' but it is very very good of it's genre.
Search lakes of pontchartrain tutorial and go to the one by PGRating. They play it the same way as in the tutorial but with a capo on the 3rd fret on this version and one on the fourth when the play it live :)
The Lakes of Pontchartrain is an Irish ballad about an unfortunate immigrant from Ireland who is given shelter by a beautiful Louisiana Creole woman. He falls in love with her and asks her to marry him, but she is already promised to a sailor and declines the offer
It was on one fine March morning when I bid New Orleans adieu And I was on the road to Jackson town, my fortunes to renew I cursed all foreign money, no credit could I gain Which filled my heart with longin' for the Lakes of Pontchartain I sat on board a railway car beneath the morning sun And I rode the rails 'til evening when I laid me down again All strangers there, no friends to me 'til a dark girl towards me came And I fell in love with a Creole girl on the Lakes of Pontchartrain I said, "My pretty Creole girl, my money here's no good If it weren't for the alligators I would sleep out in the woods." "You're welcome here kind stranger. Our house is very plain But we never turn a stranger out on the Lakes of Pontchartrain." She took me out to her mama's house and treated me right well The hair upon her shoulders in jet black ringlets fell To try to paint her beauty I'm sure would be in vain So handsome was my Creole girl on the Lakes of Pontchartrain I asked her would she marry me. And she said it never would be For she had got another and he was off at sea She said that she would wait for him and faithful she'd remain Waiting for her sailor on the Lakes of Pontchartrain So fair thee well my bonny old girl. I may never see you no more I won't forget your kindness in that cottage by the shore And at every social gathering a golden glass I'll drain And I'll drink all health to the Creole girl on the Lakes of Pontchartrain
No offense to those who love Christy or Paul's version of this ( I love them too) but this fella sounds like he might have been the one who was there. His voice has a quality that recalls some of the American singers gets collected by the likes of Alan Lomax.
The body of water at lake Pontchartrain is even in elevation from one land mass to the other. If there was a deviation in elevation from any given starting point upon the surface, the body of water will flow. The claim that you live on a globular earth neccessitates that every body of water you have ever experienced is declining in elevation in ALL directions from you WITHOUT FLOWING. DISCLAIMER: No claims are made here in regards to certain knowledge of earth's full dimensions.
I worded the comment quite poorly in hind sight. I just feel that they as a band have so much more potential than what they show. Almost as if in an effort to hit "mainstream" popularity they have remained in the one gear and haven't released full potential. (An accusation made of KOL before "come around sundown" was released. Personally this song is a favorite and Moore's and Brady's versions would be the main versions. But as I always say, different strokes!
@broderz1 you can download it, i think you can get a copy emailed to you from the bands website... well thats how i got it anyway through the free song on the mailing list. i have in the past emailed them for some recordings and they have sent them to me. just email the bands manager from the contact page on their website, his pretty helpful. or just send me a message with your email ill send it on to you... if i can :D

You must be joking, Christie Moore, generally over-rated IMO, but Paul Brady's version cannot be bettered, certianly not by this.
We all love going to our Mammy's house for a cupan tae !
They recorded this in 2010, but Paul Brady has recodings from 1978. Paul brady's is the better version in my opinion. With Andy Irvine. Check it out!
The best version ever is by Christy Moore...
