Fence Post Foam Archey Target

- Check out the entire story on greatoutdoordi... This was an experiment to see if I could make a functional, yet inexpensive foam archery target out of fence post foam. Easy to make, but needs some tweaking in order to stop higher poundage bows.
I'm thinking it's your shape that's the issue. Why not use a cardboard box that holds two bags of the foam? It will be thicker and have a large flat area instead of a smaller rounded area.
A few months ago I read a lot about DYI archery targets. Found a very good solution blending stopping power and light weight. Bought a Morrell target xxl bag, broght it to my country Colombia and filled it with around 120 used polypropilene wooven sacks. They are cheap and usually used for sugar, floor and you can find them by dozens at bakeries. Used this target with a compound #50 Bear archery bow and it has been around 4 months receiving 500+ shots per week. Measures 1 m x 1 m and weights only 8 kg.
Your kid asking questions cracked me up. I was joking with my wife that she would be asking the same things if I were the one making this video lol
Buddies would get aggravated when their kids asked tons of questions. I loved it. I can’t tell you how many times I didn’t know & we would go on an adventure to find out.
@@brotherscoyote haha you’re a good dad. And great vid btw. I’m gonna try making a target from the Sika post fix
Great idea! I'm gonna try this with a large moving box and a 2 or 3 bags of post foam. Might throw some burlap on the front of it or something for a little more structure too, or keep the first one simple to see if that's enough
Yes, that's exactly what I did. 2 years ago. Still shooting at today. Gonna make 3 more in different shapes and sizes.
Building a fram and using spray foam works too! Just build a frame 5 x 7 or something and use plywood and about 7 cans of Walmart special spray faom to fill it in. Let dry and Wala 😁
We use kingspan cavity insulation cuts we get off the building site.
Spray foam works but. You do really well with that likes. Same gear really but you can mold it or just fill a sack with it .
👍🏻🇺🇸🏴🇺🇸🏴
Thanks for the info. I'll have to look into that.
I know they are getting harder to find but grocery store bags make a great archery target. You'll need a rubber made style tote. And a lot and I do mean lot of the bags. Place a some rope inside the tote, then place a drum liner in the tote. Now start stuffing the drum liner with the bags. Keep stuffing and start standing on them to pack them in really good and tight. Once filled tie the drum liner and than tie off the target with the ropes. If done right it should stop an arrow from a 70 pound compound bow.
shipping pellet come warped in cling wrap its good stuff
A came across these floor tiles for kids on amazon have like jigsaw 🧩 shape a bought four packs of them six in a pack then cable tied all six together in a stack and a have four targets out of them the cost was only £10 for the four packs as well am shooting a 40lb and a 55lb at 25 yards been perfect for me especially in this lockdown in the garden stay safe everyone
a wooden box frame with a horse stall mat back and a picture frame front with grain sack (or like) material stapled to it (for ease of re-facing). maybe 5-7 packs of the foam, but larger and the horse stall mat stops all. great idea!!
Use a trash can for a larger target mix old plastic grocery bags packed in the solution for a more dense product, drive rebar in the bottom to stick in the ground it won’t fall do not shoot low at the rebar.
great idea! to attempt to answer your issue about maybe having more density to provide better stoppage, how about closing the 5gal bucket with its lid? that way when the foam expands, it will be compressed into a smaller area (assuming that the foam doesn't need air exposure to harden). if that doesn't provide enough compression, then maybe try 2 foam packets in the same bucket at the same time. you may have to secure the lid on the bucket as i'm not sure how much pressure the expanding foam will exert on the bucket's lid.
There is a chance it will get stuck inside the bucket, unless a heaver duty bag was used
Voices sound like Alvin and the chipmunks lol love it keep doing projects like this man
Nah man, that's what we really sound like, lol. Thanks for watching & commenting.
Nah man, that's what we really sound like, lol. Thanks for watching & commenting.
How about FLEX SEAL spray to coat the whole target with. Or DIP-IT, the liquid rubber.
This may sound crazy but maybe try stirring in cheap kitty litter or even rubber mulch for landscaping. Just a thought 👍
It's funny you say that. I am literally working on a video right now with one of the ideas you mention. Once it cures, I'm going to film the results, and upload everything in a follow up video (whether it works or not). Thanks for commenting (with what I think will be a good idea), and keep an eye out for the video.
@@brotherscoyote I'm not into archery. I'm into "shooting" and I'm always looking for the "holy grail" of targets. Right now with the price and shortage of ammo, I'm making my own lazer targets. I shoot air-soft, BB's, pellet, lazer, and the real thing. But strictly for practice I'm constantly trying new things out.
Your video gave me some ideas and I enjoyed it. I'll be watching for your next one for sure. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍
One more thing. You may want to try STALL MATTS also called TRAILER MATTS. They're thick rubber matts for floors. They are 4 x 6 foot. They are self "healing".
My buddy just got into cross bows so we're constantly exchanging ideas . I have 2 firearm pages up and am trying to do videos too. Just "how to" kind of things like that. I don't usually do this sort of thing but here's my email address. I'd like to stay in touch and exchange target idea if that's OK with you. Thanks, Rolf
@@rolfhogfeldt7645 Thanks man. I'd love to stay in touch. I would highly recommend that you edit your comment to take down your email address, or you're gonna get all kinds of strange stuff. Best of luck to you, brother. Can't wait to check out your videos.
@@brotherscoyote . I thought about the email address when I replied. I also took your advice and removed it 👍
Use old punching bag, preferable a kick boxing bags. Fill it tightly with random plastic wraps or plastis bags. It's light and tall. Repairing large hole with spray-form and duct-tape it over and over again. Works for me tho.
About to do this but with multiple layers separated with layers of a garden weed stop fabric. Thanks for the 💡 idea
Or form gym mats 6 of them 2'x2' are only 20 bucks and can put one then 4" foam matt then 4" foam and so on
Pour it into a nice large square box and then stuff old clothes or cardboard into the foam before it dries. I’m going to try this thanks for the brain power
Great idea. If you give it a try, let me know how it works, and roughly what speed & weight arrow (broadhead v. field point, etc.) it will stop. Thanks for the comment.
Use pillow stuffing. I did the same and it worked wonderfully, and I could just spray foam filler into the target to repair it when I finished.
Dude, good idea. I might give that a whack. Do you just smoosh a bunch of the stuffing into the void you want to fill, then pour the foam in? or do you mix the stuffing with the wet foam somehow, then put the mixed stuff into the void? Will it stop arrows from a compound bow (roughly 65-70lb hunting set up?)
@@brotherscoyote have the stuffing baled and drop it in right after before it can expand.
You may have to brace it down.
I like using a barrel or bucket just because it's easier to get the stuffing in a round container.
Look up DIY Sportsman and his home made target using old clothes. That’s what I use and they are hard to beat. Thanks for sharing your experiment.
I've used old close in a corn sack before, and you're right. It works great for field points, but not as well for broadheads (plus, my Simmons get stuck in the clothes, lol). I'll look up DIY Sportsman. Sounds like my kind of cool. Thanks for watching, and for the tip.
Thanks!
Word.
What about just fastening a chunk of 3/4" rubber stall mat to the front, back, or both? If the mat is enough to serve as a backstop on a higher poundage bow by itself, it seems like it would be a nice compliment to the foam.
Maybe mix 50/50 with bean bag beads
find some sheet plastic wrap that a factory or store would use for securing cartons on skids ,its just like very cheap plastic dropcloth. and stuff it in a cardboard box 2x2x2....works great and costs almost nothing. I use a 45lb longbow with field tips
That's the world largest muffin bake.. Yum
this should be more like, '' don't do what i do '' but make a wooden box and filled it with blankets or carpet layers and use an outdoor tarp ...this target box will last 100 times longer than this fence post foam would...
It probably would; however, I wanted to find something that could also refill used 3d archery targets, as well as acceptably shoot single bevel broadheads. I have several bag targets constructed as you've mentioned, and they do work really well for field points (except that I used a left over rice bran or deer corn bag). This was a test, and figured someone else might be able to learn from and improve on what I did in the video. So "don't do what i do" is correct.
I don't know maybe foam Insalation in a can (stuff it) it's called. Looks like your getting ready for bow season. Cool vid
Yeah, I've tried Great Stuff. It's not dense enough either.
What about shredding cloth and mixing it in with the foam while it's liquid and expanding? Or rubber chunks like they use on playgrounds.
I'm liking the way you think. I might try some of that.
@@brotherscoyote yeah I'd be curious if it turns out, I have seen a lot of people use just clothes or plastic bags but I think that and the foam mixed would be less likely to deflect. Let me know!
Place a board one the top.and weight it down ,that should make it more dense
Hang it so it swings and absorbs some of the force. I’ve used great stuff expanding foam to extend the life of my targets.
what if you mix HAY with it? right when it's liquid throw some hay in and mix. do you think the hay will catch on fire?
That sounds like a good idea. Not sure if it will catch fire. It gets pretty hot. Either way, it sounds like it would be fun (either got a better target, or a really cool fireball).
@@brotherscoyote yah thats what i was thinking. You know what else i was thinking, because the hay will make it more hot, it might even foam up and harden quicker due to the extra heat. I dont really have the place to try this since i live in the city, but i think it will be a cool video. Also trying it with other stuff that others have left in the comments, and comparing the results
Curious how much that cost you? I'm looking to fix my home made target! it's dimensions are 48" x 48" x 12" Deep.... I tried stuffing with plastic and clothes without success at 305fps arrows! Lol Curious about utilizing a blob target mentality? How much would it take to make those dimensions? and Cost?
How about using a square mold and having layers of cardboard in between making a multi layer sandwich..
I dig it. I might try that. Thanks for commenting.
Do u think it would’ve held up better if u wrapped it with duct tape
Do you live in munchkin land?
How many shots did this target before it was garbage ?
Wrapp in cloth or packing plastic or both
I thought this was howtobasic for the first minute.
good idea
Thanks. It needs some tweaking, but it's a start.
Can you give me a brand this produck
Is this a asmr video lmao that shit gave me tingles
Have you tried using rock wool?
I've never heard of rock wool. Please fill me in.
Rock wool is what some people call asbestos fiber insulation. I wouldn't recommend it. Wood wool, (excelsior) however is great.
is the food of ray in star wars hahaha
I'm using a 3 folded bed as my target for only 25 dollars.
what poundage is your bow set to?
Practice on something else besides animal targets. Shoot premade foam blocks or cheap walmart 400 fps crossbow speed bag for $30.00 on clearence. Will last much longer with a bow shots as opposed to crossbow shots. And it can take the punishment of 60 # compound with routine punishment. I shoot at 3" orange sticker dot circles with my 2004 Hoyt TX2000 at 6 yards to 30 yards and its good enough for me. Aim small hit small. No need to buy expensive consumable targets.
If you are going to do this make a square form.
I don't conform to society's rules! Live dangerously, my friend!
good gril loy
Can't talk?
Would not stop a crossbow
No. As done in the video, 4 of them would not stop a crossbow.
Turn it sideways/longways. No way you'd get a pass through until you had shot it many times.
gay. less than a hour that thing will be nothing but litter and pollution all over the fukn place. If ya want a DIY target, ya get some hay bails. Theyre better and theyre biodegradable too. Common sense. Even more common sense wd be to not be a cheapskate and get a fuckin real target for 40 bucks especially if you have a real bow LOL.
Mr. Voice of the People: I like to try new things to see if they work. More a curiosity than anything. I have a family with financial obligations, my budget is devoted to their life, not my hunting. I save $ wherever I can. I have plenty of $40 targets that work just fine. I wanted to see if I could use this material to fill some 3D targets that would be expensive to replace in full. Didn't work out on this one, but figured I'd help out others who might have considered doing the same.
Pour a lot more of this stuff in a tighter square box with same bag liner. Close the lid and let it grow.
You not talking is very awkward and weird
