- January was the start to a busy year of touring and gigs for the Allan Holdsworth Band. For the initial West Coast gigs, they played as a 4 piece band, with the addition of Dennis Hamm on keyboards. This is a short clip of some exclusive behind the scenes rehearsal footage, shot at S.I.R. in Hollywood. Virgil Donati is on drums, and Jimmy Haslip on bass

Holdsworth playin planet x PURE EPICNESS
What songs?
@@raymel4534 pretty much all the songs they are playing on this rehearsal lol....mainly from the beginning of the vid before they start playing road games album stuff.
Allan is the man, he has everything: great note choice, awesome tone, sweet technique, bitchin' phrasing. When i need inspiration i always come back to his work, he's just so great.
Allan is on a completely other planet musically
Virgil, you're incredible man. Dream Theater missed out. This is some epic playing.
I'd rather listen to this than Dream Theater any day.
No, he is just a technician who obviously did not know Allan Holdsworth’s material.
I smashed the like button so hard that the impact broke my laptop and reduced my arm to a bloody stump; leaving a crater behind in the wake of destruction.
Amazing practice btw.
LMAOOOO!
global temperature instantly rose by>1º
Dennis blew my mind with thundercat, so melodically in tune and the Rhodes is perfect.
I had the privilege of seeing this version of AH at Yoshi's in Oakland. Don't think I missed a tour since 1989. RIP the master. Virgil was INSANE !!!!!
Genius works best when it isn't self conscious imo. I believe every time someone starts to think about how great they are, whatever they are doing suffers. Allan just does what he does; I think he views himself as a regular guy, which makes him much nicer to talk to than someone who believes they are awesome. I have been lucky enough to speak to him a couple times; no weird ego trip going on; he's just a very nice guy.
This is Such a valuable insight to the casual, personable, professional that Allan was and the respect you all shared as a band. rest in peace Allan. Condolences to you Virgil and band. What a reflective time this must be and god speed moving forward with Allan as such an historic contributor, influence, mentor and colleague to yourself and us all. :-(
Dennis Hamm: "If the drums goes for ten minutes..."
Allan: "You want to change the key?"
Priceless.
@Emilio Abel By 'girl friend' he means 'person he stalks' ..on Instagram
interactive composition. for everything else there's mastercart
@@jaixzz haha nice
OMFG I wanna hear Allan playing Desert Girl.
Allans music will always be loved by the enthusiasts. True genius. RIP
I have a ticket on my wall to a show that will never happen.. Allan and Virgil 7-8-17.. So close so far away.. Keep playing and we will keep listening.. peace
A brain superior to what? Allan speaks about how he decided to approach the problem of music, and it is quite methodical. He literally taught himself to fluidly execute almost every combination of pitches in any grouping of notes. His genius was to imagine such a thing would be useful, but his ability to show such genius comes from actually following through with the idea. This is why I chalk it up to curiosity and discipline. Either way, brilliant! Thanks for your comment.
"His genius was to imagine such a thing would be useful, but his ability to show such genius comes from actually following through with the idea. This is why I chalk it up to curiosity and discipline." - I work in a world of fast-paced engineering and this statement holds true in that environment everyday. I like the wording. succinct and meaningful.
i read an itw with Allan from the Secrets era and he said, speaking of Vinnie Colaiuta, Jimmy Johnson, Chad Wackerman..., that "these guys don't need to rehearse, i'm the one who needs it!"
Sonic quality produced by 4 people in such rich and complex music is miraculous. What a document! Honey for the soul.
The hands of Holdsworth hold the tone
It is sad to see this new generation of "shredders" who no tone and no touch, just over-compressed flailing, so clueless. It is really sad. Guitar culture is lost now, "modeling pedals" easy way, no work ethic and yes it sounds terrible, not musical. Guitar happened. It is gone now. Thank you Alan and the handful of real players, musicians.
Snoo Lee no it isn’t.. things change there are still great players and music. Change is good and to a lot of people right now we’re in the “golden age” the fondness attached to your memories is clouding your judgement. Eunoia at it’s not so finest.
@@snoolee7950 allan has literally used up to 6 yamaha magicstomps at once for a live concerts
@@snoolee7950 Yep no one has the same musical depth or feel. Just players of fast scales
I remember watching this video years ago and looking forward to listen more of Holdsworth with Donati, and now I came across the same video to once again say RIP to my favorite guitar player ever. I hope you are resting master.
Dennis is so great. It's awesome seeing him go up the ranks with these caliber of musicians.
RIP. There will never be another Holdsworth. Such a unique and alien sound.
His playing came from a level of Consciousness no other Human has ever tapped into before or since his passing. Notes from GOD himself as a gift to Allan and the musical world.
sonority & dynamix - instruments no louder than the dialogue - bliss😎
Virgil, just one thing; You're The Man!
R I P MR. HOLDSWORTH !!!
Yes, we ( Dialog Project ) opened for them at their first show of the 2012 tour at Brick By Brick in San Diego. They opened with Fred. Great show.
This was a Revolutionary Band
Miss Allan. Those s90ES keys are good. Still got one as center in our studio.
This drummer's fantastic- I love the fill at 2:51, simple but fits perfectly.
This footage is priceless. Magicians at work. Very refreshing for musicians that think this type of material just happens :) RIP Allan Holdsworth!
Thanks for this clip Virgil! I saw the trio in Detroit this same year
I don’t know why but for some reason when I hear what they are playing it makes me think of old video games that has that jazz feel to the music, not quite sure what games it specifically reminds me of but for some reason those are the vibes I think of when I hear this! Definitely takes talent to play technical stuff like this
Sounds great! Allan Holdsworth was on another level.
Awesome memory; thanks for sharing it!
love to see him playing the Planet X tunes!
Fantastic! Thanks Virgil!
Thanks Allan!
Thanks for the post !! Very good to see and listen to your rehearsal, your creative thoughts brought to life !!!!
Great stuff this is what we all love him for the man was so out there..l was lucky enough to see him twice in Manchester.
The most Mind Bending guitarist ever. There are a lot of fast young players with more ability today, but not as much talent and vision. Allan was a one of a kind from his first gig to his last. The Best of the Best! RIP Allen. Thanks for playing Bloomington in 1984.
Nice to be able to see a clip of a great band at rehearsal. Thanks for the peek!
Thank you very much!
So awesome and authentic!!!! The perfect rehearsal :) I wish that all the rehearsals would be like this one
Thanks for sharing Virgil.
Donati composition. AH plays a couple guest solos on the Quantum album as well.
This is marvelous to watch.
Priceless!
Geniuses at work!
Amazing!
“On the record…it’s really fast!” - Jimmy Haslip
I love the 4 piece, great clip!
Great musicians and pros. A real pleasure watching them work. Could watch a couple hours of this.
Awesome! thanks!!
I've watched this over and over. And there's one word that sums it up....mesmerising!!
Saw this line up at Yoshi's SF 2014. Met the band back stage. Talked about our local breweries with Allan...I never knew he was a fan! Gracious and lovely man, as were all his band mates. I will never forget this night.
Awesome thanks for posting this!
thank you Virgil. very generous of you. I learned more from this clip than I have from several instructionals. I play and love the guitar and drums equally and have enjoyed your contributions to AH's world. God Bless Allan!
That is exactly as I remember him. I believe his greatness is the fruit of great discipline and great curiosity.
Please make an entire DVD out of this! It would be brilliant and beyond educational!!!
Please release more recordings of rehearsal sessions. I would buy them just as surely as I would buy the finished album.
the immaculate conception
Alan Holdsworth was on some " Next Level Shit " = Monster Guitar Player. Met him at bar in NYC . . . nice guy - too. R.I.P. Legend - there will Never be another like you.
wow so cool! thanks for sharing!!!
Can you, like, release this whole rehearsal like an album, like? Can we have it? Cuz I'd just buy it, like that. And I think there are many, many ppl who'd do the same.
Instant buy.
where do I pay , loved that guy ...Allan

I am willing to pay double. Yes please. And on a non monetary note huge thank you along with the purchase
personally I think it's great as the best rehearsal vidclip ever seen. - audio quality excellent - made my day😎
sounds really cool with keyboard. also great to hear planet X tunes with haslip/Holdsworth . wow. nice :) Congratulations Virgil!
I saw this tour at King King in Hollywood. I stood in front of Allan in disbelief, as usual. Great gig, you all were amazing. Allan made mistakes. I can attest he was part human for a few moments. Underrated. Humans at their best.
OmG i love when dennis hamm is in the mix too. This guy has something special!
You're probably hip to this already, jolly. But yeah, Dennis: ruclips.net/video/1XFMuU5Y2A8/видео.html
Love it..
Dude on the keyboards is killin’ it
Damn, this sounds billiant. Wish I got to attend one of the performances.
So fucking sick, it's ridiculous. I love this album. This is so cool to watch.
Nossa ! sem palavras para Allan Holdsworth
I have love for Holdsworth.
Viendo imagenes como ésta y saber cuando hay gente que dejó de estar entre nosotros que ya no le volveremos a ver me apena muchisimo... un fuerte abrazo para la familia de Allan y Virgil.
RIP Dear Allan.
You're like comes round like every couple of centuries
great !
Alan's tone is just perfect. Creamy, thick, no sharpness at all.
I miss you Allan !!!!
Freakin awesome
Very nice!
I need about 12 hours of this.
Virgil and Allan i love you.
Saudades do Alienígena Guitarrista Allan Holsworth, Anjo Celeste seus Arranjos e Improviso, Saudades Eternas.
Whoooosh! ❤
Much of the world will never know what we have lost
Superbe musique composée par Allan Holdsworth et interprétée par d'excellents musiciens!
Really glad your doing so much creative stuff virgil. Dt wasnt creative enough for you imo.
His note choice and phrasing is ammaaazzzing..
REALLY SCARRY HOW GOOD THEY ARE.
cool. saw you guys in buffalo a few months back. was a great show.
Allan still alive !!
In case anyone is wondering, there is also a re-working of Mr Spock from Tony Williams Believe It album.
What an insane band! Such a shame there's no official live release from that period, especially when looking at the setlist! At the 0:39 mark, in the bottom left corner, the set was:
- Fred (Tony Williams Lifetime)
- Letters of Marque
- Texas
- Water on the Brain
- ????
- Looking Glass
- Pud Wud
- Desert Girl (Planet X)
- The Thinking Stone (Planet X)
- ????
- Mr. Spock (Tony Williams Lifetime)
- Devil Take the Hindmost
- Red Alert (Tony Williams Lifetime)
- Proto-Cosmos (Tony Williams Lifetime)
- ????
I can't tell what the '????' songs are since the quality of that frame isn't that good...
thx
Rest In Peace, Allan.
Holdsworth, Donati, Haslip and Hamm... I would really like to see them live! I hope they will make a record (studio or live)!!!
Thanks for the kind words; love your avatar!
The thinkin' Stone!!
sick drum kit
Classical musicians take note of what you can really do!
Me most days - "I'm a musician. I have skills and 40 years of experience".
Also Me Two Minutes into this - "I don't know shit!"
