I'm fixing an old '79 GMC "Heavy Half"up for my weekender camp/fish truck. All it really needs is the pinion gear bearing replaced, and the Carter carb rebuilt. Maybe some O.D. paint someday. Runs great, shifts great-no slippages. By the time I get done, I may have an $800 truck which includes original purchase price. No computers on this truck, and its paid for. Love it!
I personally enjoy all of your videos and I am extremely happy about the educational aspect of your videos you are an incredible knowledge and I like the fact that you take the time to teach as well as demonstrate the knowledge that you have I'm very interested in some of the vehicles that you have and what also like more information on how I could possibly obtain one of the Rat Rods that you build once again God bless you brother and keep doing what you do and keep putting out these phenomenal videos as as I stated before I definitely get great pleasure out of watching them.
A lot of time is I'm on a outside feed, I take the life off at the pump and feel if it is pumping then quickly threed it back on and check the farthest line connected to the pump. I also run a wire up the line into the tank and twist it a bit to see if it carboned over there' I say this for the readers incase you forget to mention it as you've done these more times than I can count' Again another great video that show some one with minimum skill can take it to the next level with a friend or a motors manual and some scotch bright and a HVLP paint gun and have a classic in their yard. I love your videos Jonathan and am surprised that you don't have a week emd tv show as they are so popular now. I don't think there is much money in it but you have ten thousand subscribers and they wold watch... Hell, I would watch the reruns cause I constantly pick things up from you
I've got a 59 with a fresh rebuilt 292. I'm debating on electric or manual fuel pump. I've got msd electronic ignition. 4 barrel intake. Painless wiring harness. Your videos help a lot. Thank you. I am kind sad you are selling it. It's a work in progress I wish I could watch more of. I did my brakes when I was 16. I'm 31 now and your videos bring back a lot of memories.
The truck is coming along great, engine sounds pretty good for sitting for 35 years! Good idea on the clear fuel filter between the tank and pump, I'll have to remember that one. Not surprised that the pump is bad seeing how long it sat though. The previous owner of my project truck also had to replace the fuel pump along with ignition and brakes to keep her on the road, currently needs a radiator next just like yours... seems like those are always the main things that need attention to get or keep any old vehicle running.
New steel brake lines too ? Sounds REAL good ! That circle on the drivers side of the bed is where the fill tube for the gas tank (under the bed) was .
For those Ford stick on center caps just put another layer of two way tape or a blob of silicone will hold them on. I did this too I put VW stickers over top Ford hubcaps.
Its come'n along real well, Jonathan. Also, don't worry bout answering my comments, Ya got to many things on your plate to worry with me, my friend. ; )
I subscribed long ago bro, but, if you don't mind my sharing you to Facebook, I'll see if I can attract a few more people here. I love your videos, you have no idea how happy and at ease they make me feel, and watching you save all these cars and trucks... well, its like watching long lost family being rescued off a deserted island after going missing for years. Keep up the good work!
Coming along nicely . I think that Ford is growing on you anyway really like the look of the wheels and that motor sounds better each time you run it .
You might try putting compressed air to the tank filler to prime the system and clear out the line. Just take the feed line off at the pump and the air pressure will force gas through the line to clear out the gunk. Just wrap a rag around an air nozzle to make a seal and pressurize the tank. Same trick works to siphon gas , just add a siphon hose next to the air hose, the back pressure will start a siphon. Just plug the vent, if any.
Big old truck sixes like the IH had a lot of power. Always liked the idea of leaving one side of the brakes put together for reference cause I got CRS syndrome. I was taught put shoe with shorter lining to front.
Jonathan, before you go to the trouble of pulling the fuel pump down to rebuild it might be worth filling it with carburettor cleaner and letting it stand overnight. The one-way valves in the pump can get gummed up and stuck as the old fuel sitting in it breaks down and turns into varnish but the carb cleaner should break the gunk down and maybe free them up... For the centre caps on the wheels maybe getting some suitably-sized Ford stickers and stick them on to the centre caps after you've painted them and then lacquer over the top of them. The lacquer should stop them from peeling off for a good few years at least...
Also another source for those lug nuts is Costco. For under a buck you have it, a chromed lug nut. Yes you need a membership and go to the tire dept for help.
Since you are not going to keep the truck , have you ever tried that Lucas transmission treatment sealer and stop leak. It is good stuff. Really does work. Will soften and swell old seals and not hurt anything else.
James Sullivan As far as he has gone on this one, might as well do it right the first time. As you can see in the video, the leak had caused a streak on the under side of the floor board so it has been doing it for awhile. Mechanic in a bottle is a band aid at best, not a fix.
I did not see any streak nor on a truck that has been sitting for 35 years do I see how one could get there but I will get back to the Lucas sealer. It really does work. I have used it it is made for applications such as this where old seals have gotten hard from not being used. This is why I normally do not even bother to reply to things on the net because as soon as you do some guy in his mommy's basement wants to play gotcha! FYI Mr Gray I owned a service station for 30 years and worked for 3 automobile dealerships, I don't need any advice about mechanic in a bottle That is what set me off!
James Sullivan Mr. Gray is my dad. And the mechanic in a bottle wasn't pointed at you either. But why go through all the trouble of putting brand new brakes on all fours, but instead spend the money on a bottle of "hope it works" when a rear seal cost less and takes so little time to change out. Somebody can do something for 30 years and be doing it wrong too, not saying you are that guy.
Pretty cool, in much better shape than you'd have thought. That was some jury rigging on that tranny install. Those Ford emblems are convex BUT if you carefully cut the Ford logo out it will lie flat then!
That old truck is kinda cool looking just like it is. Just needs a good seat. Well a lot of other stuff a guy would find out probably. I like it though its cool it runs pretty good.
Try just getting some Ford Stickers and clear coat them into the cap. Hot glue should hold them caps in. Also welding a wire to the inside of the cap can also hold it. You should raffle this truck off to Subscribers for a $1 or something. I am waiting on the lbs swap van rat rod build.
good progress...l thought you were kidding about the trans cooler, same as the chain saw...too bad you can't take the outside humps off the drums while they're turning on the brake machine
Another great video How would plain gloss black wheel hub centers sound? Always learn something new each time and even though I will never use this info it's nice just to learn to keep the old brain cells ticking over! Thanks Mate!
I was taught the same thing about doing brakes one side at a time. But ya gotta be careful with relying on the other side as a reference when you're new to working on drum brakes. If the previous owner put them together wrong, you could just be copying their mistakes. Doesn't hurt to check your manual or the internet just to be sure.
I had the same problem with that tank, turned out to be small pinholes rusted into the top of the pickup tube inside the tank. I couldn't get any suction. I ended up having to get another tank.
Hey Jonathan that sure is a nice 59 Ford nice old Taylor it was a good year the year I was born how much are you asking for it sure would like to know thanks appreciate your videos
might be able to put a bunch of epoxy glue on the back of the emblems for the hubs. is the driveshaft yoke far enough in the back of the transmission? it kinda looked to me like it was pretty far out?
Dang, after seeing the fuel line to the carb was clogged, I was hoping the fuel pump would catch and pump fuel for ya. Is it normal to put a fuel filter down so low and near the ground hard to see and maybe catch a rock and break? Just asking, not second guessing cause I definitely don't know squat! Going to the next video hoping you got fuel from the tank to the carb.
Ok, if you have a mech. pump that has been sitting, sometimes it needs a little help. The check valves become dry, and will not seal. A trick is this- use a small amount of compressed air in the fuel tank to force the fuel up to the pump and through it, and out the discharge. Another way is to use the pcv connection on the carb hooked to the discharge of the pump while cranking the engine. (Not running). The engine vacuum will be enough to pull the fuel through the pump and wet the diaphram and check valves. (Just enough to pull the fuel through, clear hose helps here) Costs zero dollars to try.....
Is a center cap really necessary? I don't put them on any of my wheels because people think that it's a step in the middle of your wheel. Love your 59' though, I had a 60' step a few years ago.
save the old ones.. or drive in a computer car that can be shut down anytime they need. And how about driving a car not the other way around. Don't give up on her. Thank you for spending the time to make the vid
hot glue , it's the car guys friend , it will solve the honda cap tightness , and will hold the ford emblems on , it's how the ones on my wrecker are on the simulators , I love my hot glue gun lol
just my 2 cents worth but have tried using a rag and blowgun to push the gas up and out of the tank if your near a compressor i have had work for me sometimes the needs a little help.
i had a 57 gmc with a good pump and if you ran it out of gas you had to pressurize the in cab tank a little to get it up the pickup tube and flowing again
I can't even find a decent quality manual fuel pump to buy. The pumps from the usual suspects all leak externally, and not at the fittings. One actually had the arm collapse and break. I was lucky it didn't fall down into my brand new timing chain. I now have emergency electric pumps all set up to put in place with alligator clip leads to the battery for both my vehicles, that's how unreliable to the manual pumps are now. I guess I'll try Rock Auto Parts next.
Love it Jonathan. I look forward to your vids. I'm really glad I subscribed. I like the Dodge truck you just got too. I just got a 65 F100 myself. If you have time take a look see on my channel. I'd like to know what you think. Keep em coming. Thanks. Tommy
Why Not just convert it back to manual 3 speed again like the way, that Hank intended it 2b when it rolled off of the assembley line in fall of 1958? You seem to have many of the parts in your yard or know where to get them from! tony...1.24 pm 8/29/18

That old 59 has a lot of heart. 35 years dead and its back. I'm starting to really like this old girl, wish I had a place to keep it.
awesome, cant wait to see the ol 59 goin down the road, thanks for the videos Jonathan

I enjoy watching you work on the older models. I grew up driveing 40, 50, 60's models, they are so much easier to work on. Be safe. Peace.
Nother good job Jonathan! Appreciate your efforts, videos.
It's always a good day when there is a new Jonathan W video! Thanks, I really look forward to your updates.

Some shade tree mechanic had a field day with this beauty. Make sure the pickup tube in the gas tank is not plugged. Fuel should show in the filter.
😃I had a 63 F100 and it was a real dream. It was a 223 in it. But all hard parts were easy to get.
Thanks Jonathan! Learned some new things today.
New steel brake lines too ? Sounds REAL good ! That circle on the drivers side of the bed is where the fill tube for the gas tank (under the bed) was .
I love watchen your videos Jonathan. Thank you.

I would love to come across a truck like that in my area. Something nice to cruise around town in.

I forget to comment but enjoy the videos. Keep the good work.
i,m glad you saved this old truck, because it is a Ford.
love your videos Jonathan.
Also another source for those lug nuts is Costco. For under a buck you have it, a chromed lug nut. Yes you need a membership and go to the tire dept for help.
The air hose fitting in the transmission is hilarious!
love your videos man!
I'm a Chevy man, but that's a good old Ford.

i still do drums one side at a time. love this old one
Thanks for another entertaining video.
That old truck is kinda cool looking just like it is. Just needs a good seat. Well a lot of other stuff a guy would find out probably. I like it though its cool it runs pretty good.
the line going from the frame to the pump on those old fords would come apart inside and plug up I replaced a lot of them back in the day
Try just getting some Ford Stickers and clear coat them into the cap. Hot glue should hold them caps in. Also welding a wire to the inside of the cap can also hold it. You should raffle this truck off to Subscribers for a $1 or something. I am waiting on the lbs swap van rat rod build.
I get the impression that you like working on these old trucks.
good progress...l thought you were kidding about the trans cooler, same as the chain saw...too bad you can't take the outside humps off the drums while they're turning on the brake machine
I'm working on a 1951 Ford f1 with a bored out 49 Mercury Flathead the truck has been in the family since early sixties
Another great video How would plain gloss black wheel hub centers sound? Always learn something new each time and even though I will never use this info it's nice just to learn to keep the old brain cells ticking over! Thanks Mate!

Hi Jonathan, Super glue is good for the FORD hubcap
Damn i would keep that truck.Love it
Good ole 1/2"x20 lugnuts! You got a good deal from #ebay. I got mine from Mac's, along with a Lock Set.
Cool.. it's getting there!!
might be able to put a bunch of epoxy glue on the back of the emblems for the hubs. is the driveshaft yoke far enough in the back of the transmission? it kinda looked to me like it was pretty far out?
Should the fuel be gravity fed to the filter? Seems like your tank was plugged or not full enough.
Do you think you could machine a washer to clip on the back of the center cap?
Dang, after seeing the fuel line to the carb was clogged, I was hoping the fuel pump would catch and pump fuel for ya. Is it normal to put a fuel filter down so low and near the ground hard to see and maybe catch a rock and break? Just asking, not second guessing cause I definitely don't know squat!
Going to the next video hoping you got fuel from the tank to the carb.
Put this truck on an auction site so all the viewers can bid on it!
Good video, understand your process...has to be viable, to be worth more time or money!
I'm glad you saved this old truck, even though it's a ford!
Now that sounds like a healthy engine.
She's coming along....
You could use the Ford centers if you just put a thick glob of Goop on the inner side and press it on and let it dry for a day.
Silicon will hold both caps, an the ford to the cap too. An can be pulled apart if you want to change..
Ok, if you have a mech. pump that has been sitting, sometimes it needs a little help. The check valves become dry, and will not seal. I want this truck!!!
Leuk om naar te kijken men leert er nog wat van.
Jonathan , how about hot glue/gun for those Honda center caps ? I do like these old cars & trucks !
I subscribed a week ago
I got a 1960 f100 that's was originally was a 292 with fordomatic now it's got a 302 with a C6
Jonathan would you ever think of selling this truck to me I love it:-) :-)
Just layer up some double-stick tape for the centers.
Subed 2 weeks ago. I like what you're doing and really love this truck. Could you epoxy the caps on the centers?
Thanks for subscribing!! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos!!
the transmission looks like big c4 or called fmx
how much you thinking
hot glue , it's the car guys friend , it will solve the honda cap tightness , and will hold the ford emblems on , it's how the ones on my wrecker are on the simulators , I love my hot glue gun lol
Nice
is that a hidromatic trans?
just my 2 cents worth but have tried using a rag and blowgun to push the gas up and out of the tank if your near a compressor i have had work for me sometimes the needs a little help.
I thought about it, but I kept thinking about the 35 year old gas in the pump all hardened up and decided to spend the $24 for a new one.
i had a 57 gmc with a good pump and if you ran it out of gas you had to pressurize the in cab tank a little to get it up the pickup tube and flowing again
looked like you put both long brake shoes on left rear.
I can't even find a decent quality manual fuel pump to buy. The pumps from the usual suspects all leak externally, and not at the fittings. One actually had the arm collapse and break.
