We have all heard about the success stories of Dhirubhai Ambani, but there was one failure-Larsen and Toubro (L&T) in 2001.
In 1987, a rumor spread within L&T that 1% of the stake was taken by Manu Chhabria, a Dubai-based businessman, and was popular for business takeovers.
The then chairman, N.M. Desai approached Dhirubhai Ambani and he invested an 18.5% stake in L&T for approx ₹190 Crores! But when V.P Singh became the PM in 1989, he took over most of the stakes in L&T through LIC.
Finally, in 2001 Reliance exited its stake in L&T and sold it to Aditya Birla Group’s - Grasim Industries Limited. Dhirubhai Ambani lost a business battle for the first time in history and had to leave his position as Chairman at L&T.
