  • A day trip to Transnistria, which broke away from Romanian-speaking Moldova after the Soviet Union collapsed. Russian soldiers stopped the fighting in June 1992 and are there still, preventing Moldova from reuniting the territory. The 360,000 people of Transnistria maintain borders not recognized by anyone except fellow ex-Soviet breakaways South Ossetia (Georgia) and Abhkazia (Azerbaijan). Western governments say it is off-limits for tourists, but our day trip from Chisinau told a story of peace and stability.
