Blaine was my papaw Florrie was my great granny and Willie was my great uncle. Im the little tow headed boy sitting on the porch. I well remember sitting listening to him play the fiddle and watching him pat his foot and trying to pat my foot in time with his. This brings back so many good memories from my childhood. I wish things were still that simple.
We had some good times. The picture, either I or Sandra (my wife) took. It's on the cover of an old (1979-81 -shs) Tenn Folklore Society Journal. I have a copy somewhere.
@@citicoron hey Ron Williams! I'm trying to get in touch with with Russ Smith. Looking to get some answers about Blaine, he was married to my great grandmother and had 2 kids.
@@kourtneyhoot5338 Here's the link to Russ Smith's RUclips page: ruclips.net/channel/UC5u71vc1DbI4A_3cG-xqtQwfeatured > Blaine had more than 2 kids - about 11 I think. I have a couple of phone numbers and email addresses of one of his sons, a daughter, and a daughter-in-law. Please email me at asprecords@epbfi.com and I send you those, if I can fine them.
Thanks! I wish we had recorded more - we just tried to record the more obscure, rare, local tunes. I still hear from some of his family through Facebook. Blaine's house is still there, remodeled with new siding, etc; and they named the road after him "Blain Smith Rd". Don't know why the "e" is left off his first name. Maybe I spelled that wrong, too! It's on Flat Top Mt in Bledsoe Co.
gotta tell you: so inspired by this song that me, my bud new on fiddle, and our homie charlie hunter down in birmingham alabama spent a whole night with whiskey and steak playing it. we learned it quick with the good teachin of mr hunter as well. he already knew it. i heard him playing it once and was so in love. i asked him what song it was, i came home, found your page, and your amazing recording. so inspired. i could post the video of me playing just to continue and contribute the song's history! now i cant stop playing it. im 5000 of the 6456 views of this video lol. just wanted to share. great and important work you're doing.
It wasn't until a few months ago that I realized I had misspelled Willie Branan's name on the LP! (I had it spelled as "Brandon"). And Blaine, Florrie, nor Willie ever mentioned it. (All of them were quite kind to us - we did sorta look out-of-place) Link to: www.jubileearts.org/PineBreeze/PineBreezeBrochure4.pdf for pictures and the story of the Traditional Music Project at Pine Breeze Center. One of Ella Hughes relatives actually pointed out to me my misspelling of Willie's last name. (Ella was a wonderful ballad singer, singing ballads dating back to the 1600s and passed through her family). Since I've retired, I don't see Blaine's children and spouses much, but it's been great to read the family's comments on RUclips. I am indeed fortunate to have known these fine people and enjoy their company..
Willie Branan is my sons Willie Branan Jr.,Clifford Branan , and Larry Dale Branan's father. Florrie Stewart is their grandmother and Blaine Smith is their uncle. Pictures and music at Florrie's house at Hendon Tn. near Flat Top.
Willie Branan was the father of my 3 sons Willie Branan Jr.,Clifford , and Larry Dale Branan. Florrie Stewart is the mother of Willie Branan Sr. and Blaine Smith is my sons uncle. Sorry made a mistake in the earlier one.
MR. Ron Williams , my sons would like a copy of the Blaine Smith old Chattanooga 1977 album. we need about 10 albums. Could you suggest how we could get them?Thank you , I am on Facebook as Anna Mathis or message me .Album # 2.
Anna Mathis There's no problem with me burning CDs of the recordings. I've done about 50 for Blaine's family over several years.. Just call me : 423-364-0528 (cell/text) or 423-875-6497 (home). Since you're family, I'd charge about $15 to make ten copies - just my cost for materials. There's a couple of tracks that weren't on the LP that I'd include.
They've been sold out since 1980. I have three copies. I can burn a CD of the LP and copy the inner booklet of liner notes and album covers - or, I can use www.wetransfer.com to send you .wav files of the audio tracks, jpeg of the artwork, jacket covers and inner booklet, if you're interested: asprecords@epbfi.com
