Would you be able to do an A/B comparison with a U87? Really fascinated by the TLM170

Done. I've never done an A/B mic test before. That was fun to set up!

i have vintage tlm 170 with velvet label)))(bought for $1800 5 years ago), it has a transformer, the 170R does not.

What’s the difference? Is transformerless better or worse?

I also have a 170 with a purple badge, but it doesn't have a transformer, hence "TLM": TransformerLess Microphone. It's just that it was Neumann's first mic without a transformer and, on auto pilot, they gave it the purple badge of the tubeless mics. (At the time, they only had black (tube) and purple (no tube)). Only after a while they decided to give the TLM's their own badge color: red. So, the 170i with a purple badge is identical to the 170i with a red badge. I have compared them and they sound identical. You can even find pictures of the insides of both color mics online: completely the same.
