It's just that it was Neumann's first mic without a transformer and, on auto pilot, they gave it the purple badge of the tubeless mics. (At the time, they only had black (tube) and purple (no tube)). Only after a while they decided to give the TLM's their own badge color: red. So, the 170i with a purple badge is identical to the 170i with a red badge. I have compared them and they sound identical. You can even find pictures of the insides of both color mics online: completely the same.

i have vintage tlm 170 with velvet label)))(bought for $1800 5 years ago), it has a transformer, the 170R does not.
What’s the difference? Is transformerless better or worse?
