Thank you for putting a smile on my face. I was watching three lads with new gear, the price tags swinging in the breeze, and trying to read the map whilst going the wrong way. Being a bushcraft instructor of 50 + years, you can imagine how amusing this all was to me (I'm 76 and still out there doing it for days on end). If you can, always have the tent secured to the top of the tent, this will make it easier on your back, when tied to the bottom it will swing into your legs and pull you backwards and you will fatigue fighting it by leaning forward. No need to take a mallet (surplus weight), a rock or small log will do the job. I will leave it there. The distance that you had to walk was short, had it been for hours then I think that you would have found it very difficult and tiring. Enjoyed your easy-going video ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺
I cant believe for such a small creator how entertaining and well made your content is! If it wasnt for the visual stats i would've thought that your channel was extremely popular. Keep working hard and im sure that the recognition will come 💪 🙌
Montjac and foxes ,used to scare me at first ,the more you camp, the more you'll figure things out .I've camped for 40-plus years, and i still get a bit nervous. It's a good feeling to have keeps you on your toes ,on your own is the greatest challenge. God bless you and your family and happy camping 🏕 😀 😊 🙏. Lee
@thomaslock97 Good luck brother ,just remember to relax ,and nothing can hurt you. We ain't got any predators in the uk ,we'll!, the animal kind anyway !the fear is just your instincts kicking in, God bless you and your family, and happy camping 🏕 😀 😊 🙏. Lee
Looks like you had fun, One tip don't leave open food packets in your vestibule unless you want to be visited by a fox or badger in the night in woodland. Put your rubbish in a bag and hang it shoulder height on a tree. I just bought my daughter the Hyena II and I'm really impressed you get such a good tent for £50 I picked up the Bobcat 1 for my self and its smaller and lighter to pack keep an eye out for when they go on sale.
Good shout, thank you for the suggestion especially wrt tying it up high. I was gonna put it in my tent but figured if something smells it I could be in worse trouble than if it was outside. Tying it up makes more sense though!
I’m 59 only started hiking about 8 months ago the next logical step for me was wild camping with my dog Archie. I’ve done about half a dozen wild camps so far in woods around The North Downs. I absolutely love it so does my dog. My whole pack 65l rucksack is about 28lb with all my gear. One of the biggest weights is the water my dog drinks quite a bit. I always carry a water filter but where I tend to wild camp there’s not many water sources but as a water filter weighs mere ounces I always carry it You do hear some strange sounds in the night but you know they’re all just harmless animals except maybe the odd big cat haha, it’s strange though how protected you feel with just a thin bit of material between you and the outside. The biggest problem I’ve encountered is having a leak in the middle of the night opening up the tent in the pitch black darkness.
Haha no way you have an Archie!! I’m the same with the water; easily an extra 5kg if Archie is coming along. I get through a lot of water too as a gymbro.
You gotta try some of those more natural old growth woodlands with crazy history...like Epping Forest, Sherwood Forest etc.... or if you really want old... there's stuff in Wales I think! Cheers from Canada
Miles of smiles this video is great.why you buy expense trousers you could have just worn a old pair of track bottoms I would have, any way its all about having fun good video thanks
Really made me smile this, the fact you picked your gear up on the way brilliant lol.just be careful around winter tress are called widow makers for a reason.just seen you have a solo vid so popping over now👍
Absolutely amazing Thomas. I recommend you visit the himalayan mountains k2 and Nangaparbat view point from one place moses peak Gilgit-Baltistan Barah Valley. Add this sound in your bucket list.
I’ve watched many camping videos and enjoyed them all, I wish I could have said the same for your video. The only problem I had with this was how dark it is, this made it difficult to watch, other than that it would have been a good video. Best wishes for your future adventures.
Mate i used too go camping lots it can be dangerous ..... I used too go in woods all over uk .... I have people walking round my tent at 3am in morning and shakeing my tent ... Trying too scare me ... U hear strange sounds in night every night people screaming out twings breaking etc
I haven’t heard or seen anything yet but I know everyone has their stories. If I’d have heard that barking sound in the night I’d probably have been proper freaked out!
@andywright3450 I camp in the woods many times alone and unless you are on a known trail, nobody is going to bother you believe me. Please don't take notice of most of these comments as they are bull s@@t 🫡

Great video dude! Looks like you had a great time! Question about your sleeping, what were you sleeping on? As if it was only a thin sleeping matt then you were likely cold due to the ground sapping heat away from you. Also, bigger tents might sound cool but they're also colder. Your only source of heat in your tent is your own body heat so if you have a big tent then your bodies going to struggle to heat it. Great video though dude! Looking forward to seeing more!
Cheers man and cheers for the advice! I was sleeping on an OEX Flux 5.0 which has an R rating of 3 so should've been good for this trip; I think the sleeping bag was the issue... too small to fit me proper so I had to use it as a blanket, which ofc means the heat keeps escaping. Gonna give it one last chance tomorrow (and will also be buying a foil mat to put under the flux 5 just in case it is from the ground).
Did my first woodland camp on Saturday. Heard the exact same noises But didn’t bother me in the slightest surprisingly. Just anxious about any axe murders. 🤣 and also got bitten to death. Even with insect spray and fire. But I did wear shorts and a T-shirt as was hot! Won’t make that mistake again 🤣
@thomaslock97 Hopefully without sounding too patronising... please make sure you check a range of forecasts for the mountains you are going to (not for he local area, which could be several hundred metres lower). For example websites like mwis and mountain forecast. Also factor in conditions can always change and trying to camp anywhere exposed is always a risk.
The sound at the beginning is muntjac deer barking. They are very small deer and they will bark if they sense your presence. They are harmless! You are so much safer in a forest at night than in a town cente believe me. Just be mindful of rotten trees especially in windy conditions. Aka widow makers. 🫡

Just remember we don't have any predators in the UK, the most scary would be a badger if its got young and a stag in rutting season. 👍
