    Of course I think Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley is the perfect place to retire. It's a vibrant community which accepts everyone, the beauty of this area is off the charts, it's affordable, there are plenty of activities and there is sunshine almost every day. I love it here and I feel this is where I am meant to be. When I started to plan my relocation, I found your channel and your video's affirmed that this is where I belong. Love you guys and keep up your great videos!

    Great talk between you two and watch him make lunch. I retired in Phoenix Arizona as that is where i have lived since 2003. It is hot outside now. I have family here. I don't feel like traveling at all and left snow blizzards in north dakota in 1978. I was in southern california from 1978 until 2003. Phoenix doesn't have much rain either except for monsoons july until Sept. Usually rains late in the day with thunderstorms but i just wait it out until it's over as i am retired.❤ yes the beach is cooler with clouds wind in mornings especially. I did love seeing the ocean alot in long Beach. Waiting to see next question.

    Hi Steve and Jim! What a blessing it is to absolutely love where you live ! We retired in San Antonio Texas because 2 of our 3 children and our 2 youngest grandchildren live here. We are so blessed to be so involved in our grandchildren’s lives. We have a special bond. We would not have chosen to live in such a populated city that has rotten weather most of the time otherwise. Haha

    Hi Steve and Jim. Thanks for your great videos. I am a 63 yo man who lives in Chicago and I can't take the winters anymore. One more slip on ice and I will need knee surgery. I have been looking at videos on Palm Springs for a couple of years and at the same time looking at mobile homes in the over 55 communities in and around Palm Springs. I like the affordability of these homes and they look quite attractive inside and out. One thing I worry about is the extreme heat in the summer. I know I will stay home in the a/c, but I hear horror stories of tires melting on peoples cars etc. I also fear going to a new place and not knowing anyone. So I have to work out some of my negative thoughts and eventually jump on a plane and visit the place to see if I like it.

    • @steveinpalmspringsca
      @steveinpalmspringsca  Год назад

      Hi Richard, lol, I've never heard of anyone's tires melting, but it does get pretty hot in the summer. Usually its a very dry heat, which I love and my favorite time of year here is the summer. Most people who move here get used to in after a year or so. I wouldn't want a job working outside in the 100+ degree heat though. :-O And the nice thing about the 55+ communities is that most have large gay populations and they have lots of activities and opportunities to meet the neighbors and make friends. And there are so many gay clubs and organizations here that it's easy to make gay friends if you want to. Good luck with your search.

    Thank you, Steve!❤ Friends and family have always been top of the list for me as far as where I wanted to end up living. If that was not a factor, probably a little farther north like the Carolinas. Although no cities there are a draw, it would be cooler. I live in north central Florida. There are many beautiful places in the world; it would be hard to choose.

    Great video! I currently live in Pomona, CA (work at the Claremont Colleges) I've always loved Carlsbad, CA, my grandpa lived there and the area has always been a center of whatever I've been into. The older I get, the more value I see in living in a gay community. I love Palm Springs, vacation there at least once a year. Admittedly, I still have a lot to see of the country and world, but areas around the periphery of la like san diego, coachella valley, ventura have a lot going for them.

    @campingalan Год назад +4

    Hello Steve and Jim!! Whooaaa...this is really an informative video!! Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us during that huge decision of when and where to retire!!
    We are approaching that time too. My wife and mine's kids have left home (the youngest gets married in 1 month). My wife tagged along with me to some not necessarily garden spots of America, so she got to pick where we moved to when we moved out of NC (that was my last duty station when in the army). Fortunately, the area that she picked had been on both of our radars for decades (Ouray CO). At the time, I was a contractor overseas, so we could live anywhere in the world. After leaving the military (I was just a gun slinger there; no technical skills such as finance, medical, engineering, etc), I took up flying and flying for a profession.
    Finances were kind of influencing when we would ultimately retire. I called it the Big 3-- pay off house, pay cash for both kid's college, and modernize our car fleet.
    We achieved all 3 of those in November 2022.
    We had did a couple of reconnaissance trips to Mexico to consider living down there, part time, for maybe the 6 wintery months of the year, ultimately.
    My wife and I were, ironically, in Palm Springs, on one of my work trips. We were having a nice outside dinner at El Patio on the night of the Villagefest. I brought up that we should start planning the next Mexico recon trip for the Spring of 2023. This led to that, and before you know it, we shifted our wants to an "in the US", and most likely a desert southwest location. That would mostly be either a Tucson or CA desert-ish spot.
    The general plan (we were 55 then) was to keep working for 5 more years to refill the bank account a bit. We also have a modest travel trailer, so we could easily travel.
    Well, then came this April 2023 camping trip to Palm Springs. As I daid before, the day we left Colorado, my wife found a very modest mobile home in on of the parks in Palm Springs that had been remodeled; and we decided that we wanted to look at it.
    And, I should add....the things we were wanting in a retirement place are access to shopping and amenities, decent medical facilities, culture (live music, museums, art, architecture), community activities, and nice people.
    So, this led to that, and we shifted our look to condos and houses. Of course, the price point skyrocketed. And, we found a condo that worked for us that is a few blocks from downtown Palm Springs. We put in an offer that I somewhat disnt think would be accepted, and it was. Out of this process, I feel a bit bad as my wife wanted to check out Tucson too. I have been there multiple times, she hadn't. I know the desert there is stunning. But, it also doesnt have as much going on with regards to city activities. And, Palm Springs also has San Diego and Los Angeles 2 hrs away....Vegas 4 hrs , etc.
    So, some of our considerations were a bit different from yours. Specifically, LGBTQ+ wasn't really a consideration for us as we are straight. But, probably deep down it was meant to be as I feel it adds a wonderful dynamic to the area; and I still have yet to not talk to a nice person in Palm Springs. So, I feel Palm Springs' openness to inclusivity makes it a much friendlier area; and I really look forward to immersing into all of the communities there.
    And to talk about the desert. I grew up in Panama, and then headed to Boulder CO for college. That first year, I acquired a book that highlighted national parks in the desert southwest US. And then I read a book by Edward Abbey called Desert Solitaire (ha...he probably inadvertently destroyed the Moab UT area by bringing it to the view of the US hehehe). So, I have since been infatuated with the deserts in the US!
    So, the purchase of this Palm Springs condo was somewhat completely not planned for; specifically the finances. I probably have added a couple of years to my work requirements as this condo completely dominates my retirement pension. Basically, I need to try to get the mortgage paid off as soon as I can. We will still have HOA and land lease; but I do want to get that morgage eliminated.
    With regards to Palm Springs and what we like about there---- the natural beauty, relatively clean city, very nice people, lots of activities, hiking, great central location to other CA metro areas, etc. And, I will be on the hunt to listen to live music when we get there.
    The road ahead for us, there in Palm Springs-- we will initially visit when we can. I will probably look to bring our condo into the market for some light renting too. I have to be careful as it is financed as a second home; not a rental. So, I need to get some more equity into it. After we quit working, we will begin to winter there. I'll also use it as a base camp to continue exploring the west coast. And then the last component is moving there full time. I fully expect that one of us, or both of us, lose enough mobility that we can not maintain residence in Ouray, CO. So, we'd look to be more full time in this condo, at that point.
    Have a great weekend

      Hi Alan, that's so interesting to hear your thought processes on retirement too. As for Tucson, I have friends who moved there a decade ago and they hated it and ended up moving away. I guess everyone has different experiences, though. I'm sure it's a nice place for many. Have you ever thought of starting your own RUclips channel? You have so many interesting experiences I bet it would be interesting. Maybe if you need a hobby after you retire. :-) Thanks, as always for sharing and hope you two have a great weekend too!

      @Steve & Jim In Palm Springs Hello Steve. Thank you for the nice complement.
      Hmmm....I do watch a lot of RUclips. It started while I was overseas and we would have limited things to do in our free time. Yes!! I have definitely thought of doing a RUclips channel. I guess my biggest reservations are my perceived lack of creativity; which then leads to my thoughts of not exactly knowing what the theme of the channel would be.
      So....here I am.....pondering away hehehe.

Your video walking through " Tramview" community led us to drive out to PS and take a look around at what might be available in the area for us to possibly move into after I retire next year. We found the "Royal Palms" community ( 55+ off of Date Palm drive) and met a couple of great R/E agents that helped us find a great home! Looking forward to moving out there soon! Hi Steve and Jim, we bought our retirement home early as well. We moved from the hustle and bustle of the city to the country. We had purchased a camp house right across from the lake in 92', then in 05" we bought our retirement house 15 minutes from our camp and sold the camp to family. They were enjoying it as well plus being family, I left all the furniture and didn't have to deal with that. I retired early in 08' and paid off our house the following year, much to my husband's dismay! We also have a ranch home but we have a finished basement. So you could say it's still a 2 story, lol.
    If you guys don't mind, seeing as how you guys sold your new construction house only a year later, did you lose any money on that deal? The reason I ask is because my friend bought into new construction and had everything they wanted, then got transferred a little over a year later and they lost a chunk of change on the deal. Have a wonderful weekend, peace...

    • @steveinpalmspringsca
      @steveinpalmspringsca  Год назад +1

      Hi Stacy, sounds like you guys have been very smart about your retirement. We really lucked out when we bought our first home here. We bought right before the housing market started skyrocketing. We owned it for three years, but only lived in it full time the third year. In that time it doubled in value, so we made quite a bit of money on it when we sold. If we had waited and sold it a few years later, after the crash, we would have lost money. It's all about timing when it comes to real estate purchases. That's sad about your friend. Sometimes situations like that are just out of our control. Hopefully they made a profit on the next home.

      Hi guys, I use a SONY ZV1. It's outstanding at picking up voices, which helps because Jim speaks very, very softly! :-O If I used my iPhone you wouldn't hear a word that he said. The only problem I have with the Sony is that it's microphone is so sensitive that it also amplifies all the other background noises. It's not a problem in a quiet room or car, but on a busy street or restaurant, etc. sometimes the loud background noise can overpower whoever is speaking. What camera do you guys use? It seemed to pick up your voices and not the background noise when you filmed at ACE.

    I'm from Southern California but I'm living in Seattle now. I know for sure that I don't want to retire here. Growing up in Southern California my family would go to Palm springs on the weekends because the drive was so short. My question is how long did it take to adjust to the heat???? As a younger person the heat never bothered me but now that I'm older. I'll going to be 54 this Sunday uggggg, I have a hard time dealing with the heat.

    • @steveinpalmspringsca
      @steveinpalmspringsca  Год назад +1

      Hi Lori, because I spent so much of my childhood here the heat never bothered me. In fact, the summer is my favorite time here in Palm Springs. I love the dry heat. It's the humidity that I can't tolerate. :-( Most everyone I know, who didn't grow up here, but moved here later, seem to have gotten used to the heat in a year or so. Plus, in the summer you mostly stay indoors or in a cool pool. And it's only a few months of the year.

I like my townhouse that I live in and where it is located in the city where I live here in Canada. I can easily walk to any of the stores in the area. I live right on the edge of where all the stores are. I have thought about moving, but everything now is just so expensive, especially homes. For now, I think I will just stay where I am living. The city I live in is mostly gay friendly. But, after being retired for awhile, I might change my mind and decide to move somewhere else. Where that would be, I don't know.
