Every time I thought he was already in it I hear the turbos spool up even higher
came to comments to basically say the same thing.. every time i thought he was WOT , the throttle got wider opener..lol
Catalysts are required today for gas sterndrive engines up to 500 hp. engines. Lambda (02) sensors are utilized mostly to keep the engine operating in the vary narrow band that makes the catalyst most efficient. The precious metals used in the catalysts are expensive, so maintaining tighter control improves durability while allowing the manufacturer to load the catalyst with less metal. Ensuring the boat is set up, trimmed and loaded correctly has a much greater impact on fuel economy.
"Until our patent lawyers give us a green light, we're not allowed to comment on the details, but it's amazing," Fred Kiekhaefer.
They are our quad cam, four valve 1350 sterndrives which feature twin turbochargers.
Fantastic. Merc has hit a home run with those 1350's. The 50 is a beautiful machine.
OMG this is amazing!
1). Nothing to correct regarding the turbos. In the boat, all one hears is wind noise. For this video, the camera microphone had a direct shot to the four turbo intakes, so the turbo whistle recorded on the video is exaggerated.
2) The engine block, heads and inlet air are closed loop cooled. The heat exchangers, exhaust manifolds and turbo hot section are raw water cooled. Other than the actual heat exchangers, most of the cooling system is integrated into the castings.
3) Includes M8.
Smile... Spring is around !
Awesome. We'll check it out.
Love the v8 and the classic deep v combination
That sure beats the hell out of driving the overseas highway.
Til you fill it back up...
Wait, you got the money AND the yayo?
120 mph at 6200 RPM.
AWESOME BOAT&PERFORMANCE !!
COOL CAIP ;)))))
Good point, Bob.
Wow! That power package is quiet for a gas powered boat in fact one MTI cat with the same turbo DOHC 9litre/1350 package ran so quiet(World offshore-KeyWest'11) I swore that boat was running Lycoming turbines,it had the speed like a turbine too!
I found at first it was trimmed to low but boy! That thing must have one heck of a hull design to be trimmed that low and using all of the power to the water and still give a good ride! Nice!
I have been boating for 30 yrs and I am always amazed how far behind the times boat motors have been...The turbo concept makes so much sense for boats, along with fuel injection, etc. Are we going to see 02 sensors anytime soon as standard equipment, I wonder?? How hard is it to re-design an exhaust header or manifold...? why not make the most efficient running motor possible, since boats are horrible in-effecient by nature.
Got to love those whistling turbos
Sweet Jesus, what a ride!
One partial top off to be safe, although we could have gone all the way. 1350's get 25-30% better fuel economy than 1075's.
just awesome
Cost depends on a number of things, new vs. used; the size of the boat, the size/power of the propulsion package(s) installed and optional accessories included.
Well naturally
Sweet ride, even though it may seem quite to some, I'm sure wearing hearing protection would be a good idea.
Poker runs are organized recreational boating events with hundreds of boats participating. They are not a race in which the first to the destination is the winner. Card stops and a lunch stop are involved and there are many "no wake zones" along the way. It was a full day with friends enjoying a common passion for performance boating.
Awesome crazy sick fast
Holy smokes!....52 feet and 150mph!
What a rocket!
Insane power,
The same for piston aircraft engines. Until today pilots have to concern about mixture settings and complicated procedures for startup and finding best mixture during cruise..... and if they use fuel injection, its mechanical and mixture settings are still necessary... dont understand that... do pilots learn to fly because its so interesting to set mixture for the engine ?
50Cig and 2700hp...Very Cool!
Can't wait to see the 1350s run in an Outerlimits 40-43SV!
Can you say 160-165mphin a V-hull?! :)
I know if you pair exhaust pules correctly in the exhaust manifolds with equal length runners and use a divided collector on the manifold, you get better spool when paired with a divided turbine housing ... this is no secret in the auto racing world, nor are variable geometry turbine housings on the turbo's.
Tom Gentry was right! His Turbo-Eagle engines powered many boats to record speeds and Gentry himself set a few, unfortunately it cost him his life back in the mid90's.
You know what they say, buy a Fountain and smoke a cigarette!
How long did it take to go from miami to key west on that boat? Time?
every time i thought he was WOT , the throttle got wider opener..lol .. ugh i hate things that make me feel poor ..though i'm not .. but i'm not doing marauder good..lol.. i'm looking at buying a '79 Cigarette Awesome with twin n/a 650 hp each mercs.. i have a bi-turbo V8 Audi and a bi-turbski V6 Audi ..so i naturally love the engine on these 1350's .. always thought it would be fun to repower a 25'-28' boat with a couple bi-turbo 4.2 Audi engines.. 450hp - 420 TQ stock.. 575 hp/610 TQ with a '93' tune ..light and good on fuel, 7500 redline.. be a fun experiment.. i saw someone repower a 18 foot boat with a 3.0 6 cyl Audi diesel ..went 49 mph ...lol
@jayboat Thanks, Jay.
Holy $*!t that's awesome!!
I know those are turbo motors but they sound like turbines...lol Very cool and quiet at idle, low compression, all boost, is great around the dock. I think Mercury made a smart move with these motors.
You race that guy with that black boat called the candy man that tops out at 90mph!🤣
I was thinking more that o2 sensors help create the 14.7-1 air to fuel ratio..giving the most effecient burn possible,,,cold and hot.,,light or heavy load. We don't run emissions on boats in NJ yet so not too concerned about that, our season is 3-4 months. Your right though...set up is important,,but I think all aspects of fuel economy add up, not just one thing. Turbo's are the future, no doubt.
Gentry,,that name sounds so familiar. Did he race Unlimited Hydroplane...I know he built some fast boats, I have heard his name being annouced at boating events.
1 million dollars!
Awesome video. I have 3 questions.
1)The turbochargers seem to make a very high pitched shriek at upper throttle, almost to the point of unbearable. Are you working on correcting this?
2) There is a video of Fred Kiekhaefer discussing this engine and saying it is aluminum block and heads. Does the engine used a closed loop cooling system? What does this cooling system look like?
3) Does the listed weight of engine ~1720 lbs include the M8?
You ask to many questions! Just enjoy the awesome sound!
Most gasoline marine engines still don't have 02 sensors to this day...the water intergration is the issue on a good reading I guess...
I wonder how big of a wake this boat cuts
How long did it take??????
Five a d a half minutes
Probably ran a little faster on the return trip after offloading all the coke and heroin.
Hilarious!
Move them thangs.
'Cause that's where the deal's goin' down, man.
lol
butlerproman 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
is that the pbbunny kendra at the end or am i seeing things
How long it took u from point a to b?
Finally something that beats sex..........
Hell yes!
What took so long?
1:26 was that boat standing still!?
That think is making my 3 liter 18 footer kinda puny. VERY PUNY!
can i ask how much do one of thos boats coast cause i realy want them like brand new how much and i went to key west tooo i stayed at the key west in and took a 70 mile boat ride to Dry Tortugas that was fun
Put it this way each engine in it is at least 250k so just for the 2 engines your at a cool half million 💸
I would love to be in the other boats as this guy goes zooming by at 120 mph . If the cigarette gives a wide berth to the other boats then he is not hurting anyone . it is a big ocean for everyone .
nicee one menn if i had one i will use it once a year cuz of the gas!!
how fast were you guys going
is that the bang boat!!
Good gravy...
That cost a bob or two?!
Almost two
how long did it take?
what was the top speed of that turd?
@5:36 is that Kendra?
Just imagine a Cessna 172 can go this fast or faster on 7.5 gal. per hour.
same with most cars
+David C you compare Pearson with apples !
A 172 doesnt have the drag an ocean does. Thats why they only need 180hp and not 3000 to propel a 15000lb boat.
No kidding. My point is why tear up the marine environment so much? Personal enjoyment without regards to how that effects other life is reckless and nothing to admire.
Wayne Duszczak Your an idiot! No animals were killed!
Thats a toy for real man!
What is the speed limit in those narrow canals, i think you went little too fast;)
Lots of drag, between aerodynamic loses and drag, its hard to get a real efficient setup.Turbo diesel would be the way to go.But I'm not sure by what you mean by behind the times, marine engines have 02 sensors, fuel injection etc.The most efficient motor in the world can't overcome all that drag abpove and below..Nano technology may allow new types of coatings or large scale 3 D printers may be able to print a more efficent surface coatings on the hull, more aerodynamic boat designs
watch at the end of the vid
bad ass...
Ya that sure sounds like a supercharged engine to me. A supercharger wishes it could sound that good.
In how many hours did you make it to key west
wakeboard time
that's scary shit
QC-4v's have no idea.
Driver came bald to Key Eest
No my hat !!!
Now I need a kleenex!!!
Nice, check out my channel to see these in a 48' cat! I also have footage of the engine running because I put a cam inside the engine compartment in one of my vids
do u have to fuckin switch geras on these boats?!
CranioUomo No gears in a powerboat, they are direct drive.
Check out speedonthewater for news Outerlimit's new 1350 SV52.
LUV IT...ME WANT
Can't have
These motors are SC = Supercharged NOT Turbo'ed.
they are twin turbo each
lets say yours lol
Yet again, a bunch of dudes on the boat. Where are the girls yahomos?
I love fast boats but this guy gives a bad rep. to the performance boating industry.
