I’m 22, I take comments like that last statement very seriously. Great humor and so long ago. Nearly 30 years and both Johnny and Ed are gone along with the special magic that was The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson.
I don’t think I have a best film by Steve, although one of my favourites is Dead Men wear Plaid. Just the editing is top notch. Roxanne is incredible. The whole Dart Board insults routine was completely adlibbed. The Jerk was from one of his routines which he highlighted in his book 📖 Born Standing up. Just simply outstanding.
@ 3:54 you can hear Johnny roar out in complete laughter at Steve’s joke fully leading Johnny and Johnny falling into it with both feet. Steve is a complete expert in this. He did it on one of his first appearances and after Steve yelled “Well... exxxxcuuuseeee meeeee...” The camera shot Johnny turning in his chair rolling in laughter. That my friends is comedy gold right there. And Johnny did get a line in on Steve when he said two g’s and Steve snorted a laugh. Johnny was the perfect host where he would let the comedians roll with it, and let them soar or bomb. I miss Johnny... and Ed.
he did this exact same joke with Conan recently. clever move - referring back to the what he'd said about having a diary and using jokes that worked again in the future

While Carson was supposed cold, he seemed to truly love talented people, especially great singers and gifted comedians. Martin and Letterman were two of his favorites.
I was in Junior High at the time and I always thought it was "Got a condom made of stone". Does that make me a bad person? Hard to be certain, with the video quality, but I swear you can see Johnny blush a bit when Steve makes the Leno joke.
Christopher Michael If Johnny knew about that "Diary" routine, what made him even greater as the host he was, was allowing his guests(many others including Rodney Dangerfield) to do their thing and allowing himself to be part of the gag, the joke.
If I was Steve I would have freezed and quit when they said "25 seconds", he just saw an apportunity to get a few more laughs. Another perfect example of the importance of timing in comedy.
Weather he was the goofy stand up, the witty higher than thou talk show guest, the caring movie father(my personal favorite), the awards ceremony show stealer, and at times all of these things rolled up into one. In 1989 the Berlin Wall came down, there was a deadly earthquake in San Francisco, climate change was the topic at the UN general assembly. Those were the big stories which overall lead me to believe that we had a future to look forward to.

Steve And Johnny, two true greats!
Steve Martin is the funniest man alive! So original!
You got that right!
Johnny Carson is immortal. 50 years later he’s still funny.
Loved him in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Him and Candy we're so funny!
no so here, better the SNL era of a WILD and CRAZZZZZZZZY GUY!!!!!!!!
" Those are not pillows " 🤔😂
He and Candy.

So do appreciate you making these very funny bits available?? The ties from this era reminds me of those different and easier times
Humility in humor is the ultimate. And Johnny was OK with that....
Gary McAleer nk bbnok
@Dennis Vance I think it was the camera not adjusted correctly. Sluggish color.
Dennis Vance - Ha ha, yes! That was a funny bit, and Johnny took it with such good humor. Two Gs. :D
Steve Martin, great!
