I’ve been right there with you, I’m very scared that this new DK’s reveal is gonna be another Tropical Freeze reveal scenario. I just wanna have a new DK announced without everyone shitting on it 😔
My only fear is that this whole time this new DK game the internet has been hyping up to be turns out to be Mario vs. Donkey Kong 3: Return of the Minis.
I don't know why everyone says 2D platformers need to "evolve" into 3D. It's not 1996 anymore. They're different genres with different strengths and weaknesses, and there's room in the industry for both. Personally, I hope the new DK game is 2D. A Tropical Freeze sequel with King K. Rool is all I ask for.
Legitimately, I would be over the moon to see anything Donkey Kong related. And if they do bring back the Kremlings like the rumors are speculating, I might cry
if the general thought of "IF 2D I GO SKIP IF 3D I STAY" is going to stay, then it will kill the franchise or at least take a major blow. Nintendo's mindset of "if it doesn't sell well then throw it in the trash" just seems to stick even if it's not prominent, I am honestly scared of this new game when I seriously didn't think i would've before. I love this franchise so much and i truly want the best for this franchise, let's hope this ends up being a good outcome...
The funny thing about the initial reception to Tropical Freeze reveal over Metroid Prime 4, is now they just chucked us a 2d Metroid outta left field and everyone ate up and i haven't seen the same level of desire for prime 4 since lol. As for DK itself, I will live either way. I like my 2d games, i don't care for the "take series and make it a big open shiny 3d world and explore" trend on its own much. Buuuut, I agree with you that DK could be a more fun take. As well as the larger scale allowing for the larger Kong (and hopefully Kremling) family to show up again after so long. But a new 2d game would be sick regardless so i wouldn't be mad
10:22 I could swear that’s a Lanipator scream. Anyhoo, these videos always have a way of bringing me back to Planet Earth, and this one was no different. Whatever happens, I’ll be sure to keep my expectations in check.
My expectations in 2021 are extremely low. I'll take anything that isn't absolutely abysmal (insertcyberpunkcommenthere). A new Donkey Kong game, no matter what form it takes, is at least *something* to look forward to this year, and I'll be happy with it either way.
I fine with whatever gameplay they go with but it makes so much sense for Donkey Kong make his return in a big 3D game if Nintendo truly wants to make the series a pillar IP again like he was in 90s. Luigi’s Mansion 3 pushing nearly 10 million units sold is an impressive feat for that series and I want to see Donkey Kong do that.
Been thinking the same thing here. Im even worried that the outcry would be bigger if it is a 3d dk because of oddysey 2 apparently being written in the stars as a thing that will exist. A 3d dk game coming out and no sign of oddysey 2 could have its own problems.. either way, ive been following dkvine and dk rumors for a bit now since 2018 and im gonna hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
As a person who is a fan of a lot of popular underrated classics (Sly Cooper, Darksiders), I am being CAUTIOUSLY optimistic about this E3. I want another 3d DK game but I have doubts but who knows. Nintendo knows when to throw some surprises and I'd rather have my expectations low so I can jump up and down but also not be disappointed if nothing comes of it.
I'll be honest, if the rumors of a new donkey Kong come to fruition, I'll be happy with what they make, being a dk fan since childhood wasn't really so big for me until I discovered your videos, I really started to reignite my passion for the series. I also do love the references that donkey kong has been making to it's previous games
As much as I want a 2D DK game, I think 3D would be the best choice for a more likely to sell game to the general public. Then having another 2D game after that would be the best bet. I think if a 2D game releases, It would be awesome for longtime DK fans, it wouldn’t draw in enough sales since only a small majority of people have played DKCR and Tropical freeze. (Both are absolutely perfect games tho)
We did Donkey Kong in 3D before. It's called Donkey Kong 64 and it's been panned A LOT over the years. After all of the criticism and backlash it faced I don't think fans are WORTHY of a 3D Donkey Kong title. HOWEVER, if Nintendo wanted to do a 3D title in the vein of day; Breath of the Wild or Pokémon, I'd be ALL for it. People complained too much about DK64 over the years and weren't excited when Freeze was announced over Metroid Prime. I don't think Nintendo wants to put creative time, energy, passion, and money into a project that doesn't excite the community. I'm old school and LOVE Donkey Kong, but it seems he has no place in modern gaming. He's becoming Crash, Gex, Earthworm Jim, and so MANY other forgotten gaming relics of the past. He still resignates with me because of Nostalgia; I played Country with my grandma a lot, but just doesn't appeal to modern gamers any longer. I HOPE they can release a stellar game we can all get excited about, but I fear its TRUELY up to the FANS if DK stays or goes.
Oh my fucking god he used the DK Mug I can’t even describe how immersed I am in this video right fucking now I don’t even think i’m going to be part of this reality I must disap
I think a 3d crash styled dk adventure could be cool, as I don't see the type of tight precision platforming dk is known for working in a more open 3d adventure. Linear 3d levels however could be a whole ton of fun tho, it would also allow for them to do 2d segments as well much like crash does.
The problem is that Samus Hunter doesn't understand that when you 2D game with 3D graphics the environments are "3D environments." the worst thing is that if there were no leaks at all people would probably be excited, or at least less disappointed.
To me, DK getting a new game is something to celebrate. Will I be disappointed if it's just 2d not 3d? sure a little. But if the game is just as good, if not BETTER than DKCTF, then I couldn't have asked for more. Unless you add Kiddy kong as a playable kong. Let's fuckin' GO.
When Al uploads, my day gets 100% better. In fact he has convinced me to get into other Nintendo franchises. I plan on getting into the Kirby series after I finish Danganronpa
Thanks for the fairly nuanced opinion on the new donkey kong game! I think you did a good job of explaining what you feel Donkey Kong needs but how we should withhold judgement stylistically until we know how the game PLAYS and if it's GOOD. The world needs more conflicted people that can accurately pinpoint specific pros and cons rather than broadly state issues, it helps us actually progress and get better products. I personally think as long as the game has some sort of flourish (3d or some new mechanic or gameplay style) it'll show that the team put hard work into the game and that this isn't just the same thing thrice. I do think it NEEDS that hook, though. Nintendo does need to generate hype somehow for this IP to satisfy non-Kongers' incessance, and it would be nice to have a Switch game in 2021 that doesn't feel hacked in half or is a port. TL;DR : Jungle Beat 2 when?
Look as a lifelong monke fan who has grown up with DKC2 and 3 on my grandmother’s SNES and DK64 as well as having played the rest of the DK games later in life my take on 2D vs. 3D is…. As long as the game is good, I honestly don’t care
Absolutely hate how prevalent the idea that 3D platformers are inherently better than 2D platformers is. It reminds me of the trend in movies where ever since CGI became mainstream, it was seen as superior to 2D for whatever reason. But also yes I want a 3D DK also LOL. Hope they will 2D DK games alongside the main 3D ones. I somewhat miss when Nintendo had their home console and handhelds separated, because that would allow much more condensed quicker 2D releases on their handheld, and the bigger production 3D games on the home console. Great video!
I am hoping for a Donkey Kong 64 sequel too only where all Kongs can obtain any collectible if they can reach it, but if we get Donkey Kong Country 4 with Kremlings, lots of animal buddies, a nice aesthetic/theme, Bonus Barrels and (semi)turn-based co-op, I'd be happy with that too. Perhaps the most exciting possibility would be mixing the two styles, like maybe certain areas shift from 3D to 2D in more confined spaces with essentially identical controls between perspectives or in bonus barrels. So the momentum, coyote time 2D DK requires would also be possible in 3D spaces for advanced maneuvers and in 2D DK would have access to his gun. If it is 3D Donkey Kong we need New Donk City as a level that reuses part of the Odyssey map where Mario and Pauline will give you missions, but that also has it's own new exclusive area as well.
I think what Nintendo is potentially doing with Donkey Kong is what they and Hal are potentially doing with Kirby. I think Hal announcing a 3D Kirby right after Star Allies and the response to it isn’t a coincidence. Hal also said they are aiming to make Kirby a household name which is seems to be Nintendo’s goal with DK.
"oh noooo they should have been working on Mario Odyssey 2" as if Nintendo hasn't been pumping out Mario constantly since Odyssey came out. Throw DK a bone. I had a great time with Odyssey but I know I'm not the only one burnt out on Mario. Mario fans can live another like, 2-3 years until a new 3D Mario.
One idea I haven't seen get thrown around is maybe it'll be like yooka laylee and the impossible lair where the levels are 2D but it has a 3D collectathon hub world
I think what would make this new DK game really if they had Banjo Kazooie and Conker as playable characters. Say when are you gonna get to Diddy Kong’s old pals.
I personally don't think Luigi's Mansion sold because it was 3D, I think it sold because creativity, incredible animation and pushing hardware to it's limits does not go unnoticed nowadays, combined with the recognition of Luigi. Animal Crossing has always sold quite well, but now it was mixed with being a time sink in a year where everyone, even people who have never touched a video game before, were staying home doing nothing. I don't think the 30 million people who bought Animal Crossing would have cared if it was made with 2D sprites, it was just that cute little game that was being posted about on Twitter and talked about on tv. If there was a 2D Zelda on Switch that wasn't a full price remake of a 4 hour Zelda game from the Gameboy, I think it'd do pretty well and people would probably shut up about "oh well 3D sells more" instead of just realizing "oh yeah brand recognition is a thing and Yoshi, Metroid and Kirby have never really sold incredibly well". Astral Chain, Xenoblade and Arms are all 3D and they didn't light the world on fire. Smash is one of the biggest games on Switch and it's a 2D fighting game that sells because Mario can punch Link and Cloud Strife, unlike Arms being a 3D fighting game where you punch people from far away. Splatoon would not really work in 2D unless you made it like Smash TV or whatever and that sounds really weird for a online shooter. That being said, I think it'd be cool for the new DK game to be a linear 2.5D/3D hybrid like Mario Galaxy 2, Crash Bandicoot and Sonic.
Unpopular Opinion Incoming: I’m not afraid to say that I’m with the minority on this one. I think DK works A LOT better as a 2D Platformer than a 3D one. I certainly don’t think that DK would NEVER work in 3D, but I would rather have DK expand on what works in 2D rather than attempt something new in 3D and fail. Especially since we get a new DK game about once every 7-10 years. Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who LOVES 2D DK games (especially ones made by Rare and Retro) and did not enjoy DK’s one and only 3D Platformer whatsoever. Would I be disappointed if the new DK game gets announced to be a 3D Platformer? Honestly, I probably will, but that doesn’t mean I won’t give it a fair chance. Regardless, I’m excited for the future of DK!
@@landonsmith7057 i respect your love for the country series but tbh it's not complexly fair to say DK doesn't work as a 3D platformer because DK 64 is the only example to go off of, and that game was flawed like most N64 games because they where some of the first 3D platformer's ever made back in the 90's. Even Super Mario 64 was kinda janky and that was made in house by Nintendo back then with a larger budget. that's more fault on the development side of things then the mascots fault... I mean if you look at sonic half of his games are even worse then dk64, that doesn't mean sonic sucks as a mascot and need's to stick one ONE type of game... it means those bad games in the franchise where rushed for one reason or another (usually by a 3rd party studio to make a quick buck) imo the best case scenario to make everyone happy is like sumus hunter said "revivalist the series and make it piller like Mario and Zelda" meaning we get a new DK game (2D and/or 3D) once every 2-3ish years like Mario and Zelda instead of the 7-8 year drought we have now... maybe that's me being to optimistic, maybe sumus hunter is right an this new management at Nintendo will actually surprise us...
Or maybe, and here me out here, but _maybe_ it's both at once? Not entirely sure how that would work, but I'm sure it could! My big worry though, is not fear of another "should've been Metroid" incident, but rather the idea that the rumor is nothing more than that: a rumor. Grinch "leak" really killed my enthusiasm for anything that's not an official confirmation.
My excitement for a new 3D DK is so high. Then I remember that this could be 2D and I'm still excited, but not as much. Nintendo has always been reluctant to give their outsider developers full creative control over their properties, making me think that this is going to be a reboot for the DK series with new characters and a new setting. It could certainly be ambitious, but I think there's a big chance it's going to be met with a lot of negative first impressions, especially considering the dangers of the hype train. Sometimes I put on the OST for the DKC and DK64 games and just take a nostalgia trip, so I really want this to turn out good and expand on DK's identity as a franchise garnering new fans and leading to that sweet third dimension.
While I wouldn't call myself a huge fan DK, I enjoy the games; whether it's the GBA versions of his SNES games or DKCR Wii game and DKCTF for the Switch (BTW, I recently got a Switch and DKCTF and I'm loving the hell out of it!!) I never played DK64, but I wanted it and the N64 SOO BADLY as a kid! The 3D graphics looked astounding! But I do understand that DK64 isn't really held in high regard, especially after 20 years since its release. So, with a new DK game coming out, I'll be fine if it went 3D or stayed 2D. As long as it's a good game 🎮🕹 BTW Uncle Al, where did you get that DK mug? And where may I get one?
I was thankfully oblivious to the Metroid backlash at the time, and I just assumed that everyone was on board with Tropical Freeze. Ignorance is bliss sometimes.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers how unfairly Tropical Freeze got shit on by everyone I remember one review was like "This game is good, but not worth buying a Wii U for"
Honestly I'll be happy with weather we get a 2D or 3D game I think both have there advantages and disadvantages to bringing Dk back. But whatever this new donkey kong game is I'm sure to play it untill my switch explodes 😂
Another example of this scenario was TLOZ Wind Waker's reveal where people where complaining over an art style but it turned out one the best Zelda games. Points I agree i would prefer a 3d DK game but if a new 2d game comes along I'll welcome it just the same.
7:28 RUclipsr AntDude made a video on kirby star allies where he states that star allies is supposed to be the last entry in the franchise that follows the regular kirby formular. If you are worried that kirby gets stale, Nintendo's got u covered. Even if the next title is going to be shit, they are aware of the problem. Just wanted to mention that. Vry guud vido
New 3D game would bring some hype. I mean damn, the last one was from Rare back on the N64 right? I know you covered that like every video, but still surprising.
Id just like to see a new DK title in general, 2D or otherwise. A 3D title would be interesting to see, I haven't played DK64 myself so I don't have much of a point of reference, I've been meaning to snag that off virtual console while I still can at some point. But any sort of Modern DK would be welcome before the switch inevitably comes to discontinuation (Maybe some of the neglected franchises can spring out of their Graves at some point too). Its 2021, knowing Nintendos typical console lifespan we might start hearing about Switch 2 or whatever next year or the following year. I personally take leaks with a grain of salt, I still haven't forgiven myself for falling for the fake Survivor 2299 Fallout crap ages ago so I don't really hold my breath for leaks of any sort. I'll be eager to hear what Nintendo has to say about DK, if anything, come this summer. It's fun to speculate, but I'd still rather hear it from the horses mouth. Side note, nice DK mug.
Unfortunately, the average gamer is not good at acknowledging disappointment while also acknowledging that the game is good. It either “I like it and it’s good” and “I don’t like it so it’s bad”.
Whose to say this isn't a Super Mario 3D World situation? Perhaps we're getting a 3D successor to the to the 2D games? Hence, the confusion. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a 2D game. Either way, I hope it has its own style of gameplay that's separate from DKC or DK64.
Best case scenario: Samus hunter is right and this new management at Nintendo wants to revive DK and make it a pillar franchise like Mario and Zelda. So this new EPD team gives us a half 3D half 2D game like Mario odyssey built on the odyssey engine. this new EPD team continues to make triple A 3D DK games once every 4ish years while the Mario team keep's working on Mario, and Retro studio's get back to work on 2D/2.5D DK country THE SECOND they finish prime 4... ideally if Nintendo really wants to make DK as big as Mario then we will get both 2D country games and 3D "Super Donkey Kong" games just as regularly as we see Super Mario and 2D Mario. The only thing that makes me hopeful they go a rout like this is all the money they just spent on the DK part of the park and the fact they would probably look back at 2013 and go "how do we make sure this doesn't happen again, how to we protect all of our I.P and make sure it's all profitable" i hope it's true and they take that approach with not just DK but also Metroid, Star Fox, F- Zero, Earth Bound... some people are scared the new management at Nintendo will get to greedy, i hope some of that greed translates into them them reviving all these dead franchises even if it's just to make more profit.
The chances of them making another 2D DK game is very slim in my opinion. If the rumor that Nintendo EPD is set to work on the game is true, then we can 150% expect the new DK game to 3D. 3D games are their specialty for kong's sake.
>Rumors came out saying Microsoft and Nintendo are collabing in the future >Microsoft owns Rare, who made DK64 >Leakers can't decide weather the game is 3D or 2D My prediction: DK All-star Collection with a complete remaster overhaul for DK64 as a hook (Like how MCC had Halo 2 Anniversary that isn't sold separately) while the DKCR games become ports that have better graphics and better framerate. Fucking call me in the next few months so you can buy me a beer

Hal also said they are aiming to make Kirby a household name which is seems to be Nintendo’s goal with DK.
was half expecting you to chuck a banana in that coffee...
I think the intro (after the [Uncle Al] Plus part] was made like that just to flex of your DK Mug.
Gotta be real... It's all about the mug.
@@UncleAlPlus true
I’m not the biggest DK fan but I’m gonna wait to see more. More importantly I just wanna see if the game is good. 2D or 3D
Thanks for keeping an open mind. It's refreshing seeing the broader public's reaction
I am incredibly jealous of that mug
That's a cool DK cup you got there, Al.
Damn he turned into jesus
You have the hair of Frank from Raising Hope & the face of an unshaven Peter Dinklage.
One idea I haven't seen get thrown around is maybe it'll be like yooka laylee and the impossible lair where the levels are 2D but it has a 3D collectathon hub world
I'm setting my expectations to the lowest, the nest donkey Kong is gonna be another Mario vs. Donkey kong
Regardless, I’m excited for the future of DK!
based
@@janko1 still have no f’ing clue what based means lol
I am gonna feel such joy when they officially reveal the dk themepark and whatever the new game is
@@landonsmith7057 i respect your love for the country series but tbh it's not complexly fair to say DK doesn't work as a 3D platformer because DK 64 is the only example to go off of, and that game was flawed like most N64 games because they where some of the first 3D platformer's ever made back in the 90's. Even Super Mario 64 was kinda janky and that was made in house by Nintendo back then with a larger budget. that's more fault on the development side of things then the mascots fault...
I mean if you look at sonic half of his games are even worse then dk64, that doesn't mean sonic sucks as a mascot and need's to stick one ONE type of game... it means those bad games in the franchise where rushed for one reason or another (usually by a 3rd party studio to make a quick buck)
imo the best case scenario to make everyone happy is like sumus hunter said "revivalist the series and make it piller like Mario and Zelda" meaning we get a new DK game (2D and/or 3D) once every 2-3ish years like Mario and Zelda instead of the 7-8 year drought we have now... maybe that's me being to optimistic, maybe sumus hunter is right an this new management at Nintendo will actually surprise us...
As much as I like Luigi Mansion 3, give me a DKC with David Wise and I am the happiest person on the planet.
Uncle Al donkey kong cosplay?... Maybe...
Expect a mobile game port of jungle beat, got it.
Those stupid fucking beavers never want to get in the hole. Thanks for giving me PTSD Uncle Al.
Pro tip: creamer first then coffe. You don’t have to dirty a spoon with this tactic
While I wouldn't call myself a huge fan DK, I enjoy the games; whether it's the GBA versions of his SNES games or DKCR Wii game and DKCTF for the Switch (BTW, I recently got a Switch and DKCTF and I'm loving the hell out of it!!)
I never played DK64, but I wanted it and the N64 SOO BADLY as a kid! The 3D graphics looked astounding!
But I do understand that DK64 isn't really held in high regard, especially after 20 years since its release.
So, with a new DK game coming out, I'll be fine if it went 3D or stayed 2D. As long as it's a good game 🎮🕹
BTW Uncle Al, where did you get that DK mug? And where may I get one?
I was thankfully oblivious to the Metroid backlash at the time, and I just assumed that everyone was on board with Tropical Freeze. Ignorance is bliss sometimes.
The Big Ape deserves a good game with great sales. I don't care if it's 2D or 3D. I just wanna see the funni Mohnkus take the 'nanners.
You know what I just realized....we might get just a CG trailer for it and STILL not know whether it's 2D or 3D by E3 xD
I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers how unfairly Tropical Freeze got shit on by everyone
I remember one review was like "This game is good, but not worth buying a Wii U for"
What a beautiful man
yes
They need to fix the turn around problem
You can't roll when turning around and I just don't know why
8:51 you just preparing yourself for disapointment, DK 64 will stay the only 3D Donkey Kong game
You make video discussions fun and entertaining. Good discussion. Banana slamma!
Wait is that him??? Where monke?
I just want to play as Candy Kong
7:28
RUclipsr AntDude made a video on kirby star allies where he states that star allies is supposed to be the last entry in the franchise that follows the regular kirby formular.
When did people stop liking 2D DK.
Look man, I just want me monke game. If me get haha funni monke and chimp, me will screech with delight.
BATMAN REFERENCE! I love Twoface.
I'd like to see Mario Odyssey 2 and a new 3d donkey Kong
I would rather have a 2D game but as long if it's a DK game i'm happy
Your points were well explained and said, very fair. But I would share Arlo's opinion/disappointment. I REALLY want Mario Odyssey 2
What if the new DK game turns out to be Jungle Beat 2?
Finally my Uncle Al Plus is paying for itself
Let’s hope for the best it won’t suck
Huh, so that’s what he looks like.
That is one cool mug. But you should know real Kongs drink coffee black with a banana garnish. 😉
Algorithm
Monky
I hope for 2D personally but 3d for boi's sake
The only thing that makes me hopeful they go a rout like this is all the money they just spent on the DK part of the park and the fact they would probably look back at 2013 and go "how do we make sure this doesn't happen again, how to we protect all of our I.P and make sure it's all profitable"
i hope it's true and they take that approach with not just DK but also Metroid, Star Fox, F- Zero, Earth Bound... some people are scared the new management at Nintendo will get to greedy, i hope some of that greed translates into them them reviving all these dead franchises even if it's just to make more profit.
The chances of them making another 2D DK game is very slim in my opinion. If the rumor that Nintendo EPD is set to work on the game is true, then we can 150% expect the new DK game to 3D. 3D games are their specialty for kong's sake.
>Rumors came out saying Microsoft and Nintendo are collabing in the future
>Microsoft owns Rare, who made DK64
>Leakers can't decide weather the game is 3D or 2D
My prediction:
DK All-star Collection with a complete remaster overhaul for DK64 as a hook (Like how MCC had Halo 2 Anniversary that isn't sold separately) while the DKCR games become ports that have better graphics and better framerate.
Fucking call me in the next few months so you can buy me a beer
