Have you considered trying to make a magnetic induction foundry? I've been seeing a lot of videos here on the RUclipss of people demonstrating how it can heat and even melt metal for casting. It makes me think that if someone were willing to scale it up enough there might be a very green alternative to using fossil fuels for melting metals with exceptionally high melting points like steel and iron.
I did see a company advertising them on banggood I think. I wrote asking if they wanted me to review one but they never replied... at all. That made me sceptical. I may not be the biggest channel on RUclips, but I hope I have a reasonable reputation for casting. So ignoring me suggested they didn't like the idea of someone who melts metal a lot having a go. The PLA and Wax both stay inside the plaster until it is heated to a very high temperature. These then melt away to leave holes in the plaster. Molten metal then fills up these holes and once cool the plaster get removed. Then you're left with the rings 😊
I can't be sure offhand Jamile. I typically use an angle grinder, a Dremel (with cutting disk or sanding drum), small files and ordinary sand paper : )
I'm going to be honest and say I don't know. There's lots of theories about metals being toxic and I don't think there's a definitive answer yet. My guess, as long as it's occasional, it should be fine.
These are becoming much more accessible and diverse, which is great. You'll find powders dedicated to wax and even to resin these days. Whether there's a real difference is debateable 😁
Nicely done. Are you able to take pictures or something and put it on your computer then 3D print it? Then you could have made extras if something had gone wrong. I do not know much about 3D printing and would like more information. Thank you. Great job 🍻
I'll be honest James, I'm still learning 3D printing myself. I got my Creality CR10S in January this year, and I'm very pleased with it. It's one of those things you can watch 1000 videos on, but never really grasp until you buy one and get on with it. If you do, after a week of swearing and cursing me, you'll get there. A week later, you'll see why people love them. 3D scanners are a thing, but they're a little pricey I believe. I think we'll see those becoming more and more common very soon.
@@vogman i have gotten through the first week and my printer stopped working because pla went into the screws. So I guess one more week of cursing you? Ps: The printing was great after two days. I just have a questionable sense of humor.
It's a rare day when someone, somewhere, isn't cursing me ; ) I'm impressed with a couple of days. I had bed-sticking issues until I discovered some wonderful tape. SOOOOOOO much swearing before that : )
I know I have said it a few times that I am building a pile of meltables, but I am. I plan on building a couple different sized foundries and melt my piles for ingots and stuff. I travel a lot so I find aluminum a lot. 300 pounds at a guess with 20 pounds of copper and 5 of brass. Most is outside. I just don't have a workshop yet. Next couple of months and I will have one 😃 Then the work and fun will begin along with a RUclips channel too boot. My fiancé does crafts and I will help make items for that. Till then, my piles are building and I am gaining knowledge. To the future 🍻🍻🍻
Hello there, lovely video, I’m just wondering do you take wax ring designs for pouring as a business? Or if not do you know of anyone that does? Thank you x
Actually I will be covering this very topic in a video is a few weeks. Keep an eye out for me Zombie ring and I'll be advising those without casting equipment how to get cast 😁😁😁
The PLA and Wax mainly drip out of the plaster onto the oven floor where they mostly evaporate, but some fine ash gathers after a few casts. But the plaster... you're stuck with that mess : )
I'm self taught in honesty, but I've got videos covering the whole of my journey. But if I'm too dull for you, you might find local jewellery making classes : )
Hi, I can’t answer about the printer but as someone looking at getting into casting, no you cannot reuse the lost wax as to clear it from the mould you actually burn it away to ash
Ron... I thought it would be you... if you'd been just a few minutes earlier you'd have beaten Tobho's comment on exactly that point. I was about to pin it to the top in case anyone was wondering. But thanks for noticing : )
I guess the answer to that Tim is 'which homemade one?' There's been a couple. For Lost PLA / Wax I need two heat sources, one to melt / burnout / prepare the plaster flask (for which I use my homemade electric furnace) and one to melt metal (for which I use a tabletop, store bought electric furnace - though I've also got a couple of gas furnaces I use from time to time). The choice is purely preference... electricity is quiet, clean and indoors. Gas is noisy and outdoors. But for more on the why, have a look at this video I made on Lost PLA. It should tell you everything you need to know : ) ruclips.net/video/qxj5eUkAFUI/видео.html
It's still my favourite furnace : ) Have you seen last week's video? I added a programmable PID to extend the use of that furnace, giving it Burnout capabilities - ruclips.net/video/hGCL1FXKXss/видео.html
How much would you charge me to do a lost wax cast of a small trinket if i was to send it to you made out of the wax product of your choice? It would not need to be perfect. In fact some air bubles and imperfections would be what I would prefer.
Thanks. I made my own electric foundry which now tends to be used as a burnout oven. This was much cheaper than buying one. ruclips.net/video/XypmI38IKAw/видео.html
Should not have put pla and wax in one flask as burnout temp differ and rate of melting of wax differs you would probably have had better results to seperate them
The totenkopf with runes is cool, carved with special tools? I’d buy a werewolf or one of these, 3D printer needs directions not a photograph, this seems like based hobby, good for him. Beats having to spend money if made it yourself for fun. Dog tags from Otto Skorzeny or copy of rare limited production. Wouldn’t gas burner be cheaper, than that kiln thing? Like use to burn glass or set fire 🔥 to sugar cane, genuinely don’t know. I’d make one for a item or too, but sure, the could do it. Special wax, soda, wow completely a knob.

Feel free to send me ideas anytime... but please don't be offended if I say no. I'm limited on time and resources so I have to really want to do what I do : )

After cooking the plaster with the wax in it, does the wax melt away after pouring it?
Most of the wax drips out and what remains burns away to nothing, leaving a void ready to receive the molten metal.

I can't be sure offhand Jamile. I typically use an angle grinder, a Dremel (with cutting disk or sanding drum), small files and ordinary sand paper : )
That still helps thanks alot working on a few projects myself you earned a new sub
That's great to hear. Drop me a line any time if you need a little help : )
How do you dry your plaster molds?
You don't really. They're damp when they go into the burnout oven and from there they get the drying of their lives : )
@@vogman I was wondering about that - two birds with one stone. I like that idea.
Hello, im have a question, the aluminium bronze is toxic in rings for the aluminium??
I'm going to be honest and say I don't know. There's lots of theories about metals being toxic and I don't think there's a definitive answer yet. My guess, as long as it's occasional, it should be fine.
@@vogman ohh, It's sad I wanted to make an aluminum bronze ring to wear every day 😢
What is the tumbler called? I'm looking to purchase one for my jewellery
Any specific type of casting plaster?
It's a rare day when someone, somewhere, isn't cursing me ; )
I'm impressed with a couple of days.
That's excellent. Share the learning experiences : )
Hello there, lovely video,
I’m just wondering do you take wax ring designs for pouring as a business? Or if not do you know of anyone that does? Thank you x
Actually I will be covering this very topic in a video is a few weeks. Keep an eye out for me Zombie ring and I'll be advising those without casting equipment how to get cast 😁😁😁
Good...👍
Thanks Glenn : )
This is nordic gold?
What do you do with the "burnt out" plan / wax, or does it just "vanish"?
The PLA and Wax mainly drip out of the plaster onto the oven floor where they mostly evaporate, but some fine ash gathers after a few casts. But the plaster... you're stuck with that mess : )
The pla cooked out?
Exactly : )
great video, thanks for sharing, do you offer 1 on 1 tutorial ?
So, just curious - have you tried casting brass? We're there any difficulties...?
I have cast in brass (example - ruclips.net/video/tXJ_MuffQd0/видео.html) and it's a nice metal, but the toxic fumes put me off.
Is the base you use available on thingverse?
Hi Luis. Yes my casting tree is on Thingiverse. Just search for VegOilGuy and it should come up : )
How is mass produced jewelry made like earrings and body piercing jewelry?
A lot of cheaper jewellery is stamped / pressed into existence, the same way coins are made.
@@vogman Thanks I’ll have to look into what that process is like and how they are able to achieve such high precision.
Where can i learn how to do this
I'm self taught in honesty, but I've got videos covering the whole of my journey. But if I'm too dull for you, you might find local jewellery making classes : )
Hey there! Which 3D printer do you use? Also, can the used “lost wax” be reused in the printer?
Hi,
I can’t answer about the printer but as someone looking at getting into casting, no you cannot reuse the lost wax as to clear it from the mould you actually burn it away to ash
Nice rings. 👍
How long have you been going by VOG?
Ron... I thought it would be you... if you'd been just a few minutes earlier you'd have beaten Tobho's comment on exactly that point. I was about to pin it to the top in case anyone was wondering.
But thanks for noticing : )
Don’t quite understand your furnace situation- you seem to have lots! Why have you stopped using the homemade one?
I guess the answer to that Tim is 'which homemade one?' There's been a couple.
For Lost PLA / Wax I need two heat sources, one to melt / burnout / prepare the plaster flask (for which I use my homemade electric furnace) and one to melt metal (for which I use a tabletop, store bought electric furnace - though I've also got a couple of gas furnaces I use from time to time).
The choice is purely preference... electricity is quiet, clean and indoors. Gas is noisy and outdoors.
But for more on the why, have a look at this video I made on Lost PLA. It should tell you everything you need to know : )
ruclips.net/video/qxj5eUkAFUI/видео.html
Glad to hear you are still using the homemade electric, it is on my (rather extensive) todo list, so pleased to hear it is still in favour 😊
It's still my favourite furnace : )
Have you seen last week's video? I added a programmable PID to extend the use of that furnace, giving it Burnout capabilities - ruclips.net/video/hGCL1FXKXss/видео.html
Good evening caould you make a ring from iron and brass for me ?
How much would you charge me to do a lost wax cast of a small trinket if i was to send it to you made out of the wax product of your choice? It would not need to be perfect. In fact some air bubles and imperfections would be what I would prefer.
Awesome ! I really want to do that for some of my jewellery projects. What kind of oven did you use ?
Thanks. I made my own electric foundry which now tends to be used as a burnout oven. This was much cheaper than buying one.
ruclips.net/video/XypmI38IKAw/видео.html
@@vogman Thank you !!
I think coins and bars could be made with this method easier also.
How can we go about getting you stuff to cast.
I'm always looking for ideas and do welcome suggestions. Anyone can contact me privately through my website here -
www.vegoilguy.co.uk/index.php
I cannot guarantee I'll do it. It has to appeal to me. I need to enjoy doing it otherwise it becomes work, and that's not what I want for my videos. So if it's an idea that I like, I may well give it a go. Feel free to send me ideas anytime... but please don't be offended if I say no. I'm limited on time and resources so I have to really want to do what I do : )
That turned out Awesome. You should see some of the rings I have made in silver. I made an awesome .9999 Crucifix for my friend in Canada, Lionel deGrand Pre. Look him up he shows them off all the time on youtube. I also have a few videos(Nothing as impressive as yours) on my youtube Channel. Keep up the good work My Man!
Thanks John. I've only had a quick scan - and 2000 sub is nothing to be sniffed at, well done. I always think getting the first 1000 is the real trial. But if it's something you enjoy doing, then subs don't come into it - they will find you. If YOU are happy in what you do, THEY will be as well. Maybe that's why I haven't got 2 million subs, but I'm happy doing my thing and chatting with folk : )
@@vogman I know this is kinda selfish but I like this kind of content more.
Feels more personal plus you can actually interact with people.
Speaking of which - why do you give everyone a heart?
Not everyone... but nearly everyone, yes. Why? Why not? As you say, this interaction with like-minded people is great. Even criticism is appreciated, as long as it's genuine and not just intended to be hurtful nonsense. I don't know everything, so if someone points out a mistake, I learn. And, to be a bit corny, I do love getting comments, questions and feedback. So hearts.
@@vogman John Sellers is a great fella. Good friend, I've been trading with him for years! :D
Any friend of yours Cap, is someone I have to keep a close eye on ; )
Nah, just kidding. John's always been very supportive with his comments, much like yourself. You're both on my Christmas Card list... if only I owned some Christmas Cards : D
Welcome to the jewelry casting addiction.
It's certainly got its attractions : )
Can you teach me please
That's what the videos are all about my friend : )
Hey can you make a ring for me?
So now the question is. When are you opening up your own Jewelry shop? 😆
Well, it's no jewellery store...

@@vogman well... that shut me up. lol
I like all those pieces but how about that one triangle puzzle piece you made a few videos?
I really wouldn't want to put a price on those. They are nice but take three casts to produce. That's very work intensive.
Anyone copy existing ring?
