lp stands for "long play", hence its additional length up to 25 minutes or so. 78's and 45's were around the 3 minute mark

Techmoan has an excellent video about the format war between LP and 45s.
Basically LP was designed to fit a whole album of 78s on one record. But 45 was designed for automatic players so you could just throw together a playlist. (And stack them without having the grooves touch)
@@juanpablo1834 just play. Also worth mentioning that since they were made of shellac they were super strong but super brittle. So the records lasted forever but you had to replace the needle each play.
Yeah, it bothered me that he said maximum 3 1/2 minutes and then kept emphasizing that it has to be less than 3 minutes.

I think that hyperpop is also the only thematically sensical way to rerelease Friday. Friday was relentlessly mocked for being the worst of pop, and hyperpop is basically a parody of pop.
I think the reason hyperpop resonates with people despite being absurd and over the top is it's completely sincere. It's taking all the stuff people don't like about pop music and saying "no, this shit is cool actually" and amplifying it 100 times.

Alcohol just unlocks the right state of mind for me. While being sober I tend to care too much about what dark things I know about the world and want to not buy into.
(I warn about the demons that turn the world into hell, and I'm also fun at parties.)
If I could have the positive effects of alcohol permanently, I could probably manage to build a career in entertainment. (And/or get myself killed by a lynch mob. ... So win-win.)

I think the musical note “personalities” are more about the letters assigned to the than the notes and what people perceive those letters as representing and what they connect those letters to. The personality, or really, character of a note is contextual and based on how it is played.
Completely agree. I kinda associate C with being sorta cheesy but that's because when first learning piano everything was in the key of C and all the music I was being taught was that super happy piano music for kids which I developed a distaste for and now I still associate that with the note C, not because of any actual qualities that note has.
There's a legend that when Holst's Planets debuted, the cleaning staff heard the orchestra rehearsing, and sparked a sold-out run through word-of-mouth.
That sounds like a variant of the reason behind the title of that exemplary 1970s BBC music programme The Old Grey Whistle Test. Apparently the cleaners at the Beeb - mainly women in those unforgivably sexist days - were known as The Old Greys (presumably because of their age and the colour of their uniforms). And if they'd heard a musician play in the Beeb studios, and were heard to be whistling it later, then it was deemed to be a catchy tune and most likely a hit!
Yeah, my LP of The Planets recorded in the late seventies said the same thing. Liner notes said the cleaning ladies were at first put off by Mars, but got into it by the end. By Jupiter they were dancing.
Also, you've gotta give Holst credit for sound engineering. "NO! They don't sing quieter, we slide soundproof doors in front of them!"
@@Bacopa68 I actually attended a performance of the Planets in Minneapolis with John Williams of all people conducting and they did the doors thing where the singers seemed to be receding into space. It was downright magical.

"Carinhoso" (1930) by Pixinguinha, which is maybe the most famous song by one of the most important Brazilian choro composers also uses that CESH line cliché and it's absolutely stunning.

I used to work on cruise ships as an audio engineer, and I can say that Adam's assessment is spot on. Cheap alcohol, long contracts of playing the same gigs every day, it creates a lot of "lifers" (not just musicians, but dancers, techs, etc.) who don't know what to do with themselves when they go home for vacation. Good to do when you're young, and for a short time, then bail.

One minor correction - LPs were originally the common name for 33 1/3 RPM albums. 78RPM records - the first really standardized play at home records - had a 3.5 minute maximum length. The 7" 45RPM records, popular in the 50s and 60s, were 4-6 minutes. LP which stood for Long Playing were 33 1/3 RPM with roughly 22 minutes per side.

The alcohol and ship combo is a tale as old as time. My grandfather was a ship's medic in the 40s and 50s and pretty much every crewmember was an alcoholic. One of the radio operators slept with a glass of liquor next to his bed to calm the shakes when he woke up.

Memorizing tempos isn't too hard actually. If you know the tempos of your favorite songs and think about what it sounds like you can get a very close approximation to that tempo and with practice you can become pretty accurate.
I just estimate off 60bpm=1 beat per second, 120bpm=2 beats etc
A liittle but faster than 1 beat per second or a little less than 2 beats per second
True. I've listened to When The Levee Breaks so many times in my life that I can fairly reliably count off something in the region of 80bpm by hearing Bonham's drums in my head. It's not perfect, but it's a decent reference point.

Yes. For presenting symphonic work on 78 RPM records, publishers bound multiple discs into a book, which looks something like a photo album. LP stands for Long Play. A single 33+1/3 RPM disc can hold around 60 minutes of music, comprising multiple songs. I guess that’s why they call them albums.

@@martinamakek9608 that's a myth. Mayo Clinic for you: Drinking caffeine-containing beverages as part of a normal lifestyle doesn't cause fluid loss in excess of the volume ingested. While caffeinated drinks may have a mild diuretic effect - meaning that they may cause the need to urinate - they don't appear to increase the risk of dehydration.
I can drink in excess of a liter, my parents sometimes go even higher. Nothing happens to us. There are even studies that suggest it having a prophylactic effect against dementia.
I would say less caffeine can be more. But that's just my cup of tea.

The 10" diameter are ~3'. But my Dad had a bunch of classical and jazz 78's that were ~5' at 12"diameter.
lol. Yes, LP stands for "Long Playing" format (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LP_record). The technology Adam referenced is actually 78 RPM discs which have a practical limit of less than 3 minutes per side.
@@nino-ciampa He meant a 78-rpm, which were generally about the same size as LP (10 inch or 12".) The 10" could hold 3 mins, or the 12" did about 3 and 1/2.

Actually Absolute tempo is fairly common in the marching world. Most instructors I've had could identify tempos within 5bpm and drum majors need to be able to count off at very specific tempos with no reference.

I occasionally quiz my music theory classes verbally on hypothetical key signatures, like B quintuple-sharp minor (37 sharps) or A quadruple flat major (25 flats), to "encourage" (LOL) them to apply the logic of the orders of flats/sharps and the circle of 5ths to an extreme. I get a good chuckle and they get exasperated! We laugh together when I remind them that writing in extreme keys like those will only get the composer/songwriter stuffed in a locker somewhere.
It is so much easier to write in E minor or F Major!
