    Some may not take the B52's seriously, only as a novelty act, but they were quite innovative. The guitar riffs (Ricky Wilson, RIP) were always interesting and well structured, along with the backbeat and signing, the ladies (Kate and Cindy) and Fred. Those first two albums were their best.

    The band is from Athens, GA, home to the University of Georgia where they were students when the band was formed. Also from this little college town: R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Drive-by Truckers, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Azure Ray, Pylon, the Glands, Vigilantes of Love, Vic Chesnutt, Reptar, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Dead Confederate, John Barry, Ravenstone, Danger Mouse, Love Tractor, and so many more. Just an amazing little town that The NY Times said is the birthplace of indie music.

    John Lennon talked about them in an interview, and said the B52's were one of his inspirations for getting back to recording after a five-year hiatus. The result was his and Yoko's last album, Double Fantasy. He heard Rock Lobster in a club somewhere and immediately fell in love with them. The B52's, Devo, Television and the Talking Heads all showed up around the same time (late '70's), and I got excited about music heading in a strange new direction.

    • @99tonnes
      @99tonnes 2 месяца назад

      Yeah I heard that about about Lennon. Shame the inspiration led to such a lame album... and I dig the Beatles as much as anyone, but let's not kid ourselves. I remember the day he was shot, and all that. Very sad, but it didn't make Double Fantasy a good record.

The beeping in the beginning is the same beep as that transmitted by satellites in the late 1950s. The main riff is the theme to Peter Gunn (t.v.) in the early sixties by Henry Mancini. I was the house dancer at the Starwood in L.A. (best r'n'r' club ever) for a while in the seventies and when this song came on the floor cleared and I danced, oh yes, all of the dances. Thank you. The singers are Kate and Cindy, not Claire. Kate does a duet with Iggy Pop somewhere in the eighties.

    Great reaction guys, really enjoyed it. Give me Back my Man or Rock Lobster for even more B-52 style fundom.
    Edit: There is a great live version of Rock Lobster ca 1979. They had an almost cult following with legendary concerts in the SE US.

    THE WORDS B-52 IS ACTUALLY THE REFERENCE TO THEIR BEEHIVE HAIR-DO'S. OR TEASED UP HAIR. I SEEN THEM LIVE, IT WAS A REALLY FUN CONCERT.

    The main guitar riff is the "Peter Gunn Theme" - James Bond with fewer calories. Written in 1959. Jimi covered the song.

    One thing I never knew about this song until I watched the video is that the organ like sound just before the words start is actually Kate Pierson’s voice. Check out the video on RUclips.

    We all know a Claire, and she definitely comes from another planet of her own. That's the meaning of this song. It's about a women so out there, she has to be an alien.
    My favorite B52s song is Dance This Mess Around. Cindy's vocals are always their best songs. Also, Give Me Back My Man is a Cindy song.

    The reason Nick thought is sounded like a detective movie is because the main riff was a direct rip-off of the famous Peter Gunn Theme by Henri Mancini used in many movies.

    It's really from their first album (as I'm sure lots of people have said in the last 3 years). I'd just like to boast that I saw their first UK show, at the Lyceum, back in '79, with my cool friends Paul and Paul. I have pictures to prove it. It was a lot of fun, as you can imagine, a lot of fun. If I remember rightly they were supported by Fashion, who sort of nearly had a hit once, but pretty quickly sank without trace. Also maybe Delta Five. Happy days...

    When it came out in 1979, critics called it New Wave musics. It was the end of Disco era.
