How To Make A Paper Mache Mouse

  • This little mouse was easy and fast to make. My little mouse gave me an excuse to use the "bun foot" that I found in the closet. It's also a great project for showing you how to use a cardboard pattern inside a really small sculpture.
    I think it may be faster to make an armature with a pattern inside, like I did this time, instead of with wire. Try making it this way and let me know what you think. (I used wire armatures inside all the tiny dogs in my tiny dog book, so that method works, too. :) )

    I found you a few years back, had only my in laws backyard to create a huge Day of the Dead Catarina mask, then moved twice after, wishing I had more space to create with your amazing paper mache techniques. My husband finally got orders to move to Italy and all I can think about was getting a home in Italy with enough space and light to get lost in creating. I went from watching only lame make up videos to finding you, then I’ve only wanted to watch anything and everything art related, art history included. I became a mother at a young age and a decade later I rediscovered my love and passion for creating, all because of the knowledge you’ve generously shared. After much time, sweat, tears and stress, my family and I are finally in Italy. We literally had our final walkthrough today before signing our lease on Monday. And as I said, all I can think of is how I finally, finally get to be in a space where I can comfortably use my hands, make a mess, and make things that bring me joy..all because of you, Darlin’. 💖 I tear up while typing this because I’m so gosh darn happy!! My daughter gave me the greatest idea to make huge mushroom toad stools in what will soon be our lovely garden, with your recipe☺️💖. I’m sorry this is so long 😅but I truly thank you to the bottom of my heart ❤️ After watching you for the first time years ago, I never bought make up again, instead I invested in all the art materials I can get my hands on and hoarded many objects I plan on reusing for future projects. I look forward to sharing them with you as soon as we’re settled in. Thank you again Jonni. You’ve literally changed my life and made this stay at home mother absolutely fulfilled with art and discovery 🥰🥰🥰 Cheers to you and your future art endeavors ✨✨✨✨and a million times thank you Jonnie. This is facinating. If this was taught to me in high school instead of newspapers dipped in paste (no one told us about sanding so we got all kinds of seams showing, and no one told us to make a pattern, it was free form blobs), I'd have had a whole zoo of creatures made by now. I plan to do my first one sometime this summer. Looks like fun, I appreciate your video showing how to do this.

    Thanks Joni. I haven't watched you in a long time because I lost my workspace and couldn't make the sculptures I used to make. Now, I am selling art in a gallery in Olympia so I have an outlet. For this holiday season I made some little cardstock flying bird ornaments that got me back into creating sculpture. I only have my kitchen table and very little storage so I need to work small. I have started trying to make some spirit dolls and haven't gotten very far yet with that. But I am interested in doing more sculpture and was looking for examples of how to make really small things and that was when I found you again. Loved the video, am inspired and would be happy to hear about any other videos you might know about for tiny things. I have started my mouse and will add paper mache tonight. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

    how does the paper mache clay hold up? ive been interetsed in using it for a costume mask because just Cardboard would mold, does the clay risk that too?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  3 года назад +2

      Any form of paper mache can encourage mold if you don't let it dry as fast as possible, and then seal it so it can't soak up moisture from the air. I haven't had any problem with mold on my sculptures, but they never get wet. I must say, though, that a mask made entirely of paper mache clay is really uncomfortable to wear. It dries as hard as a rock, so it's almost impossible to get the inside smooth enough. I suggest putting it over paper strips and paste or a cardboard base, so the mask will be smooth on the inside.

    It is adorable! I love your videos, you're so interesting and calming to listen to! If you have time to answer , do you think paper mache is ok for 3d project or only as more of a "cover" or for flatter projects like masks? I tried making a hand with paper mache clay but after drying it shrinked and lost its shape. Should I make it with journal and tape and only do an outer layer with paper mache like you did here? Anyway thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work, it inspires me to try making things 🤗

      Paper mache doesn't have to be baked. It will dry just as hard if you let it air dry. In fact, putting it in front of a fan may make it dry even faster than an oven would. Have fun! 😊

    would it work if I used purchased air dry clay instead of paper mache clay?

      Probably. I've used Activa PaperClay and DAS clay in the past, and they worked pretty well. But I don't use commercial products very often, so I'm really not very familiar with them.

    Can you make the mouse sitting on a strange little house with a warm light shining out of the window?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  3 года назад

      I could, theoretically - but today I have to make my chicken run bigger and put my crop of cabbage in the freezer. If you make a mouse and give him a little house, I hope you'll let us see how it turns out. 🐭😄

      Thanks, Laurie. I do believe the votes are in, and a darker base won the vote. I hope to get it painted today. 🐭😄
