  • How to manually (orally) inflate a Mustang Survival MD3184 automatic (Hydrostatic - HIT) Personal Flotation Device.
    I started wondering about this after automatically inflating my PFD by jumping into a pool at a US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar. Once I packed it back up how to get at the inflation tube was no longer obvious.
    I believe oral inflation is a requirement for ORR races such as Marion to Bermuda.

    Bro, you're the mvp. I've been trying to figure out where the manual inflation tube was at. Mustang should have you on payroll for this 🤙🏻

    Can't believe the manufacturer does not offer this type of video. It answered all my questions as I prepare for an outing on salt water. Thankfully, the one thing they stressed in the Navy was preparation and practice. Nice job sir

    Nicely done and informative, particularly in comparison to the MD3183/4 Owner's Manual that simply states "Undo the zipper on the wearer's left side, exposing the oral inflator"--with no indication of how to do the non-obvious undoing. Frankly, I find the Manual's discussion of this potentially LIFE SAVING feature remarkably shoddy.
    btw--to be consistent with Mustang documentation, what your video describes is "oral" inflation (as suggested by your opening comment). In Mustang-speak, "manual" inflation is triggering CO2 inflation by jerking the pull-tab, rather than "automatic" inflation triggererd by water immersion.

    Likely the best video I have seen for the Mustang inflatable PFD! I could not figure out how the vest inflated automatically as the zipper seemed to be securely holding it together. And then I wondered why they have the Velcro tab at the side where the zipper ends. Now I understand it, Thx!!

    Thanks for the video! I have an onyx inflatable pfd and I think the operation is similar so I appreciate the tips! Mine is automatic so it's important to note on the automatic ones that there is a part that must be removed before you get wet or it will need to be replaced. Cheers mate!

    Excellent video at demonstrating why not to buy this brand PFD. Thank you.

      I wouldn't say that. I still recommend this PFD when sailors ask me what safety gear they should get for offshore.
      I'm pleased that they designed those tabs for opening the jacket the way they did for access to the manual inflation straw if the CO2 cartridge fails.
      All I've ever had the chance to evaluate offshore is mustang survival and spinlock. A lot of people like the spinlock deckvest and I can see why; they are comfortable. And I love that they come with everything you actually need for offshore built in. But when all hands is called heeled over 40 degrees at night I'm clipped in on deck helping before the spinlock wearers turn on the cabin lights to sort out their leg holes.

      @@gwizz777 No, this is how you do it *if* it would ever fail. Security depends on failsafes, and this is the last one in the arsenal for any of these vests.

      @@gwizz777 So do you believe for a couple or a few hundred bucks there are some PFDs that will NEVER EVER fail whatsoever at any time anywhere in this world?

    Man why would you buy one with a zipper? Sounds terrible compared to the ones that just close shut with velcro

    You might be thinking to yourself wow I should just pull the cord because this is just stupid on 15 different levels. But then you found out the cartridge for the stupid thing is $100 and you realize screw it I'd rather drown trying to manually inflate it!

    Hey man. What's the name of the tube that you blow in?

    Are you not at risk for double inflation once the HIT is immersed? Or is this a PSA in case the HIT fails?

    • @SavvySalt
      @SavvySalt  7 лет назад +3

      This PSA is in case the HIT and manual CO2 inflation string fail. If the CO2 canister failed to break open or corroded and leaked.
      You are right that inflating it manually puts you at risk for double inflation. Unfortunately if you remove the CO2 trigger/inflator it leaves a big hole and the PFD will not inflate.

    This is just a poor design of PFD. Once you are already in the water every second counts. You don't have or need to do all the steps to fully inflate. There might be some alternative buy yeah a thumbs down to me.

    • @SavvySalt
      @SavvySalt  Год назад +2

      These are the instructions for when the CO2 cartridge for the hydrostatic inflation fails. If it works it inflates automatically 5ish seconds after you hit the water - or you can pull a rip cord to trigger the CO2 inflation without immersion.

    some of the vest are poorly dezined for instance some of them like yours has a manual releace handle well post people want want this will some day get that stuck on something thus filling it with air. the other thing that sucks is how many people buy the automatic and despice what they wear told to not relize that when you are out fishing or on the water and it starts pooring the vest with auto inflate. or even worst how many people have left it on ogt in their car and dropped soda or coffie on the release or opened the window a tad to much when raining and it got wet well the cheap vest go off as its just a water censor on other sencors.
