The biggest challenge Maresca will have will be facing teams that use the low block and are reluctant to press in Chelsea's half. From 2017, the last time Chelsea won the PL, they have struggled against lower blocks and counter-attacking teams. Sarri, Lampard, Tuchel, Potter and Pochettino were unable to create an effective and consistent strategy against those kind of oppositions. Stamford Bridge has a relatively small pitch compared to other PL teams. So, the advantages of positional play (at least the way Maresca plays it) are in a way compromised, especially when it comes to using width to spread opposition defences. Also, when you look at all the Chelsea teams that won the PL, they were not possession based teams. They were physical, high intensity, pragmatic and fast paced teams. They knew how to be very attractive (2009-10 & 2014-15) but with more physical, free-flowing and aggressive approaches than positional play. All in all, it's going to be a difficult challenge for Maresca to overcome.
Makes sense. I really am a bit apprehensive of Chelsea's first season under Maresca. Will it work. Chelsea have never prospered as a possession based team whenever they have tried. I think it’s important to realize that he doesnt have to plug and play his tactics from Leicester. The best players in Chelsea’s team might be better used if he pushes the left back up to the left wing to hold width and play Nkunku as an inside winger (like Palmer did last season) while keeping Enzo, caicedo and Reece in midfield. That would be a 2-3 or 3-2 base with Reece operating as a Libero, making late runs into those right half spaces that he likes. Everyone is then is their preferred position . Enzo can freely pass as he has protection from Reece and caicedo. Nkunku has the freedom of the left half space, Palmer has the right half space and noni (or olise) can hold width and cut/interchange with Palmer from right wing
Agree exactly with what your saying, although I think the system would work better with Nkunku starting in the central cam spot and the LW (whoever it may be) being the one to hold width, Cucu acting as the Liberado. On the other side Palmer keeps doing what he’s done so well this season- inverting centrally from RW with James pushing up into the final 3rd where he’s most dangerous to supplement the attack. Essentially your idea but mirrored from left to right.
Playing enzo as the deep lying midfielder would make him see alot of the ball, and time for him to make those diagonals and final passes. Cant wait for next season.. caicedo would actually be great as a box to box midfieder
Enzo can’t defend and Caiceido literally can’t carry the ball. We really only saw this 3 man midfield against United and it was run over worse than almost any midfield we’ve ever put out.
Enzo was playing as the DM in his first season under Lampard and we all loved him despite the awful team performance, Caicedo is a natural 8, box to box aggressive midfielder like Modric I really feel like we need a better reliable ball playing goalkeeper and and a striker with aerial superiority
And this is where Callagha will come in again.. 😂 Last season we saw the best of Chelsea when Callagha and Caceido partnered in the middle of the park..I think for big clubs, it should be Caceido and Callagha then for mid table clubs, it should be lavia or endo and Caceido
Adaptability is the biggest strength of any manager who wants to challenge for league titles. Pep did not win the league in his first season, but they were very good football team, often let down by their GK and a lot of times, lack of proper fullbacks. Another point you mentioned was regarding the number of players being used. Yes, while City and Arsenal have used similar number of players, the minutes are distributed very evenly across City players than Arsenal's. Relying on the same line-up week-in week-out means fatigue creeps in towards the end of the season, and it is the reason why Arsenal have lost two league titles in a row, also the reason Poch's Spurs did not win anything. In a rigid positional system, tactical flexibility comes not from differing structures but the different quality of players on the pitch. Yes, it is a positional system, but there is a huge difference between how City play with Doku on the left vs Grealish, Walker and Lewis at RB, Alvarez and Haaland up to carry similar differences. They can tactically change things up while maintaining the system, while Arsenal barely can. So, I believe you are categorically wrong to think Chelsea's diverse squad is a flaw, it is likely the biggest strength Chelsea have. So, if Maresca is good enough to be a Chelsea manager, then he needs to understand how to accomodate everyone in his system, not for the sake of their price tag, but because every player offers something competely different to think about for the opposition, and that will be how we have to win more games than Arsenal throughout the season. Because every coach will be found out, but it's much harder to beat a team if they have a very diverse tactical style-set.
Maresca spends only an hour of training with the team, the rest of the hours he uses that time to set up a 11 vs 11 match session everyday, this allows every player to have an idea of the system and style. So the players that will grasp the philosophy quicker will most likely start in the first games of the season whilst integrating the other ones slowly but surely.I think Maresca will pull it off personally. He understands his philosophy is complex, hence why he spends most of the time perfecting it
Many people are mentioning Maresca's possession based "slow" football. I think he was doing this to suit the players he had at Leicester. He will be inheriting a host of explosive and technical players with Chelsea and he will definitely tweak how he plays. Let's wait and see.

It’s unfortunate how enzo’s price tag can influence mareaca’s decision making. The midfield should be caicedo-gallagher. Depending on the scenario, maybe palmer on the right to open up channels centrally for enzo could be an option. Ideally, i think the way to go is have james inverted with chilwell providing width on the left, having gallagher protecting him on counters. Cucurella can then become an interesting offensive alternative when mudryk is needed for width. Squad truly provides a lot of alternatives depending on the scenario faced. Only additions considered, should be a versatile attacker like gyokeres and a ball playing centreback
You are spot on with this but if i may add, the cdm should be caicedo because he so used to play quite deep and narrow previously at brighton when he had his breakout season and also in ecuador in last world cup, and the more b2b midfielder should be gallagher because he's one of the best presser in the game last season, he also record pretty big distance covered but the problem would definitely on Enzo's price tag, 120m on the bench isn't something that the board and some fans would satisfied with even if they have a good season
Excellent video, very insightful. My only doubt about this sort of "How Will Chelsea Line Up Next Season?" story is that people seem to assume that all the injured players will be back and won't get injured again. History tells us it's extremely unlikely that James, Fofana, Lavia, Chilwell and Nkunku will all be fit. Sadly they seem to be injury prone and I can't see why that would suddenly change.
Hopefully with the change in the medical team, they will be able to better monitor the more injury prone players. Injuries were a nightmare last season so I'm sure that reducing the number of injuries will be a top priority.
We keep hearing the comment about improvement after Enzo went out and Connor came in, but have yet to hear anyone comment the fact that was also the first time Cucu was inverted allowing Connor to press up. That just as easily could have worked with Enzo advancing up being a more creative presence in the final third getting the best out of him. Great breakdown, I think Enzo and Caicedo flip but otherwise it all makes me excited for next season! COYB
@@calvinchaba well, Poch is gone primarily for other reasons. Not arguing he was late af to adjusting tactics to get more out of Enzo.
I don't think it could've worked with Enzo up front. He doesn't deliver the defensive workrate that Gallagher does, and his attacking output isn't really significantly better. Good player in that first half season, but he's looked a bit fragile and vulnerable in this last season. In his defense, he was apparently playing with a hernia, but he still has to come back and definitively show that he can be relied upon to put in the work. But putting things differently, if I were to pick a front 5 who had to do all the attacking, would Enzo be part of that? I don't think so. He'd probably be the number 6 or 7 attacker who comes up to support. The first three are obvious, Jackson, Nkunku and Palmer. Number 4 is one of James or Gusto. Number 5, probably Chukwuemeka or Madueke or even Mudryk, depending on fitness, form, and opposition. They can all do good work, but they need to be forward to do it, whereas probably 90% of what Enzo can do is something he can do just fine as a fairly deep-lying midfielder.
@@jusven007 not saying Enzo would do the same role as Connor did under Poch, but Enzo brings something different to the front group - creativity that we seriously lacked bc he was kept further back in the pivot or lacked the cucu coverage when he did go fwd so he he got blamed for leaving Caicedo exposed.
Well, the expectations and the level of competition will be higher next season. Adaptability will be key for Maresca. City and Arsenal going after the title with a good Liverpool side led by Michael Edwards and they have a set identity and you got United who rarely miss UCL football years in a row and a new ownership. Spurs and Villa also will try to fight for the top spots. Chelsea fans will definitely expect an improvement on last season. This is probably first in many years since I remember all the big 6 look stable and strong, Chelsea need to be careful and effective to win.
Chelsea could slot in James and Cucarella both attacking with a 3-2-5 in attack by playing either with a regular CDM like Lavia or Ugochukwu to drop as a half-back or to use Enzo as a very deep lying playmaker to give him space to make long passes. Caicedo would then be dropping into the midfield 2 with Cucarella and Palmer would be attacking the left half space, with Madueke as an inverted winger and James on the far right side
Great video but less worried about it NOT working at chelsea. If Lecister can adopt with lesser players and as you rightfully pointed out, we ran a similar formation last year to the end. We should be fine.
This is maths, not football. Maresca ranked second for passes last season, but second to last for forward passes….how depressing! As a Chelsea fan I’m gutted that our clueless owners have chosen to impose this style of football.
Nkunku is also a tough player cuz I don’t think he can hold width on the left unless u have someone overlapping him (which Maresca prob wouldn’t do). He doesn’t have the defensive ability (mostly work rate to play as a midfielder. And he’s also not good enough in the air to play as a striker. He’s a great player but also one that’s hard to use
I think Chelsea's form of playing from the back under Maresca is gonna make them concede a lot of goals. I think premier league top/mid table clubs will have closer man to man coverage making long balls from the keeper the only viable solution, likely resulting in loss of posession either up the pitch or way too close to goal.
Great video. Tried to cover principles behind maresca’s style rather than trying to fit the Chelsea’s players in a replica of lcfc’s team. Think we’ll buy more 4 more players this summer. Linked with olise(winger) and sesko(ST). Probably a lcb/lb hybrid and a GK like mads Hermansen who can play as a CB in build up
That formation and payers is EXACTLY how I see it - with the one tweek that if they land Olise hell play in place of Madueke. There may be a ne striker - but not necessarily starting. there is cover even if not using Nkunku - Madueke and Mudryk or Sterling cover the wings. Lavia (for Enzo likely) , Chukwuemeka (for Palmer) and Gallager (or Santos) covering Caicedo in the middle.
I just love the fact that for weeks, different sports analysts have been trying to define Maresca's strategies. Interesting to watch. This is something I have missed since Sarri days. In all, I wish Chelsea a successful season. We are blues 💙
As a matter of fact, considering the point he was trying to make, Arteta is the perfect example because Kompany hit the ground running in his first season at Burnley
What Maresca will struggle with is not just the low block. It is that a lot of balls go across our final third (huge risk in The Premier League). Anything wayward and you are handing your opposition a free goal which means we are going to have to come from behind in matches. Despite overloading the midfield with a man advantage. With our inverted fullbacks we are a man down in our backline (I don't count any keeper as a part of the back four). So, now teams can transition, counter-attack, and overload our final third. It also means if we face a good pressing team like Man City, Arsenal, etc., we will struggle to work the ball into a threatening position. We need our forwards to come deeper to go forward which means very little runs in behind. Despite having trouble with low blocks if we are not fast enough and sharp enough out of the gates then we could find ourselves 2-0 down and our slow build up play does not favor getting very many chances on goal. I don't care for possession-based football I want goal-based football. On top of that, possession-based football in a low block means nothing because all you are doing is retaining possession with no incisiveness. It becomes slow and predictable and over a full 90+ wastes a shit ton of time.
Its all talk really... lets see what happens when we start playing for real. Many managers have tried to change Chelsea's positional play and it hasn't worked that well. Slow build-up will make us look like tottenham, and we know how that will end
Bro you reasoning for why we should worry (we have too many different types of players) is exactly what will take us to the next level. We are fluid we don’t have to play the same way every time, and maresca’s principles of how he wants to play will work. Don’t forget we spent a billion on some ballers.
I think that line up is perfect to attack since you are having Palmer in the middle and Nkunku joining in inside with Madueke too, they can promote a lot of combinations even against low blocks but can they prevent the counter-attack? Palmer it is not that intense without the ball, same with Enzo, Caicedo might need some help in the middle and that help could come by having Gallagher instead of Enzo, better at pressing but worst at the construction phase, I think they could switch depending on the opponent. Great video, it was really well explained and I´m very curious to see how Chelsea will play it out with Maresca in comand.
Nicolas Jackson is the perfect fit for the role of the striker, he is very good at dropping back to recieve passes and his ability to turn is often overlooked by many Chelsea fans
I like the video and how you presented it, but I do think that you will see that because of the level of European competition Chelsea is playing in, Maresca will have a number of opportunities to rotate players in that competition. Giving him more opportunities to see how players will fit in different positions.
Like many other chelsea fans, i'm praying and hoping that Maresca's possession style of football does not SLOW our game bcos i perceive it wont work well for Chelsea and personally i hate tactics that slow games.. We dont want to have an " inverted Graham Potter" in another guise.
Their lack of discipline was all on poch....dude just threw them in en let them freestyle u could clearly tell chelsea didnt have proper patterns of play
This was a great breakdown. I'd like you to discuss my opinion. I say this system works. But instead of James rotating to RDM he goes RW with Palmer starting at RW and moving to RCM or RAM on attack. James is so good at crossing and defending vs wingers that I feel he is a waste in the center of the park. So then Caicedo and Veiga make the DM partnership with Colwill, Tosin and Fofana making the 3 CBs. I say veiga because if caught on a counter he can seamlessly pick up a defensive position and give James time to retreat.
I think what makes or breaks Maresca's reign at Chelsea is whether he accepts that he has an enormous toolbox in terms of player abilities, and that he can't just ignore all of that in order to play with exactly the same mold that worked at Leicester. A lot has been said about how rigid he was in maintaining a particular system, but I have to think that a big part of it was also working with the material available at Leicester. Sure, it was probably one of the best teams ever in the Championship, but there were still limits on what the players could be expected to actually do. At Chelsea, he will have to reimplement his system and make adjustments to fit the needs of the players. Otherwise he will fail. If he goes into this thinking that if it worked at Leicester then it should be exactly this way at Chelsea then he will fail. It will just be Sarri-ball all over again.
Idk Enzo was capable of decent pitch coverage under Potter and Lampard before he had the hernia. I think he can carry out both responsibilities similar to Winks
One thing poch lacked was clear tactics, the players didn’t really know what they should be doing, or that’s how it looked at least, whether that’s criticism to poch or players is unknown, but what’s clear is maresca needs to implement his tactics and get players pulling their weight
It’s hilarious to me that you can say “time is not on his side” when he’s just starting a 5 year deal. It’s funny because it is true. It seems odd that they would look for the 4 v 4 with the longer ball but then take their time from there. Seems counter intuitive.
As a Chelsea fan and going by the profile of our current players, I would prefer Maresca to adopts a 3-5-2/3-2-5 system, similar to Inzaghis Inter Milan. This would be my starting 11 and backup 11 options 3-5-2: Starting 11 (3-5-2): Jackson. Palmer. Moreira. Caicedo. Angelo. Gusto. Enzo. Colwill. Tosin. James. Petrovic. Back up 11 (3-5-2): Chukwemeka. Nkunku. Chilwell. Casadei. Drewsbury-Hall. Sterling. Santos. Badiashile. Disasi. Fofana. Sanchez.
The formation should be 4-1-2-3 Petrovic as GK, colwill and fofana as CB, Chilwell as LB, James as RB, caicedo as DM, enzo and Gallagher as AM, palmer as RW, mudryk/Sterling as LW and nkuku as CF
My biggest concern is the midfield enzo fernandez situation. I am not sure how he will play the winks role because although he can play great passes, his defense is horrible. Lavia is perfect for that deep lying playmaking role with caicedo box to box & palmer as the hybrid 8/10
Why would the best most talented midfielder in the premier league play the "winks role". You think the directors would have hired Maresca if thatwas his plan? 😂
@@nicolascastelli4439 so what other role would he play. He can’t do box to box & for drewsbury-hall palmer is the perfect 8/10 role not enzo. enzo can pass not score as well

Interesting analysis. I would rather Caicedo stay in the deep position while Fernandez pushes up front. Caicedo has a good passing range, I am not sure why the press often overlooks that.
True, but I still feel there needs to be a certain hierarchy within the team that is still not set. I don't think it's positive if no one knows if they are the starter or not every weekend. Having great back-up options is key and will help Maresca in all the competitions, but constantly changing players in certain positions every weekend will make it tough (imo)
I think this system will work well with the players we have but it will definitely take some time. I am genuinely scared of having Sanchez in goal next season. He has a bozo gene that cost us so many games last season. Glad Poch is gone because his football didn't suit the players we had. If Gallagher is your best player and has the most touches when you have Enzo and Caicedo in your team, then that is a huge problem
Provavelmente o goleiro será o Sanchez por ter sido treinado pelo De Zerbi no Brighton onde precisava jogar bastante com os pés. Probably the goalkepper would be Sanchez for having been coached by De Zerbi at Brighton where he needed to play a lot with his feet.
He had one year with a flawed squad of players not suited to his style of play. At Chelsea he has a much more talented team that is suited to how he wants his team to play.
Please can we get Hansi Flicks tactics or style of play he will be implementing at Barcelona, the pros and cons and also players who will benefit and whole lot. This is the 3rd time of asking

Enzo cannot do the kind of running Connor does, he mostly run out of steam in the 2nd half
Maybe the best actual analysis and foresight of the key problems Maresca may (will probably) face. Well done!
Fantastic video... so impressive. Well done! You've earned a sub for sure.
Great work great work!!!!! I am impress. Keep it up.🤗🤗
Best analysis of Marescas style I've seen to date ❤❤ I love the visuals and graphics
Keep up the good work
All Chelsea fans gather here💙
If we lose our first 5 games we fucked big time
This is too much talking. We await for the session to start.

I’ve waited for this for so so long.. nice bro
Super wizzo commentary old chap. Many thanks indeed. Very thorough understandable and clearly stated. TOP SHOW
He'll need lots of pre season games
Wrexham,Celtic,Madrid,Man City forgot the other one😅
Sure..
He shouldn't use the season to exoeriment oo😂

Great analysis... I've been following you guys for a while now.. Your analysis is not bias
Nah this video is elite 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 thank you!
great analysis mate 💙
I think Chelsea's form of playing from the back under Maresca is gonna make them concede a lot of goals. I think premier league top/mid table clubs will have closer man to man coverage making long balls from the keeper the only viable solution, likely resulting in loss of posession either up the pitch or way too close to goal.
I actually think Lavia is the man to play the CDM position as he has Enzos technical ability with greater mobility and physicality
Great video. Tried to cover principles behind maresca’s style rather than trying to fit the Chelsea’s players in a replica of lcfc’s team. Think we’ll buy more 4 more players this summer. Linked with olise(winger) and sesko(ST). Probably a lcb/lb hybrid and a GK like mads Hermansen who can play as a CB in build up
I think the exact XI you showed at the end is his preferred XI to start the pre-season, if somehow none of them are injured.
Brighton is interested in FC St. Paul's manager.
Can you dig into his tactics for us
That formation and payers is EXACTLY how I see it - with the one tweek that if they land Olise hell play in place of Madueke.
Declan Rice is not the holding midfielder for Arsenal! Partey and Jorginho are. Declan is more of a RPM.
Putting Arteta who lost the title by 2 points in the same frame as Kompany who got relagated to make the same point is outrageous
He said this system needs time mf before that 2nd place season arteta took long to actually get the team running listen carefully ffs
As a matter of fact, considering the point he was trying to make, Arteta is the perfect example because Kompany hit the ground running in his first season at Burnley
I loved your analysis Bro. You just won a new subscriber in me
This was so beautiful to watch. Glued me to the screen. Kudos
His biggest problem will be our clueless owners
Lol. Owners are not clueless. It's stupid to think rich people will put their money in an area they have no idea about
Why are the owners clueless?
Our owners are not clueless bro.... u just don't know what you are saying
The most stupid thing to say
If Chelsea gives him time, then he should be fine but he needs to adjust his tactics once teams figured out how to play against them
What Maresca will struggle with is not just the low block.
What he does with the Gk at Leicester won't work with Sanchez against the best pressing teams in the league
Finally.. been waiting weeks for this 🍿
Its all talk really... lets see what happens when we start playing for real.
Don’t forget we spent a billion on some ballers.
awesome video
@footballmeta u are the best well detailed
Great video great effort ❤
I think that line up is perfect to attack since you are having Palmer in the middle and Nkunku joining in inside with Madueke too, they can promote a lot of combinations even against low blocks but can they prevent the counter-attack? Palmer it is not that intense without the ball, same with Enzo, Caicedo might need some help in the middle and that help could come by having Gallagher instead of Enzo, better at pressing but worst at the construction phase, I think they could switch depending on the opponent. Great video, it was really well explained and I´m very curious to see how Chelsea will play it out with Maresca in comand.
True with a lot of possession Gallagher seemed lost and played poorly but played good when we were a bit open
You're a very good analyst, from this analysis I think Jackson will be one of his best player
I like your video editting style
Nicolas Jackson is the perfect fit for the role of the striker, he is very good at dropping back to recieve passes and his ability to turn is often overlooked by many Chelsea fans
I like the video and how you presented it, but I do think that you will see that because of the level of European competition Chelsea is playing in, Maresca will have a number of opportunities to rotate players in that competition. Giving him more opportunities to see how players will fit in different positions.
Sanchez adapting to suit this Moresca use of Goalkeeper will really be a huge upgrade. But honestly I think we need a new GK in Alex Valles
Like many other chelsea fans, i'm praying and hoping that Maresca's possession style of football does not SLOW our game bcos i perceive it wont work well for Chelsea and personally i hate tactics that slow games.. We dont want to have an " inverted Graham Potter" in another guise.
Mudryk would be a super sub behind Nkuku
He will face troubles..the tactics require huge responsibilities and almost none of our players are as disciplined.
that's on the manager and coaching staff
Their lack of discipline was all on poch....dude just threw them in en let them freestyle u could clearly tell chelsea didnt have proper patterns of play
Great analysis...
Thank you!
I think he can carry out both responsibilities similar to Winks
how can I learn your style of video editting ?
Reece James could be the inverted full back as he has done it with Wigan when on loan
What app is he using to talk about soccer tactics?
he probably wont get time to implement his philosophy at Chelsea. Wish him all the best
If this is the team he goes with, I will cry tears of joy. I think you should be the manager for Chelsea
This would be my starting 11 and backup 11 options 3-5-2:
Starting 11 (3-5-2):
Jackson. Palmer.
Moreira. Caicedo. Angelo. Gusto.
Enzo.
Colwill. Tosin. James.
Petrovic.
Back up 11 (3-5-2):
Chukwemeka. Nkunku.
Chilwell. Casadei. Drewsbury-Hall. Sterling.
Santos.
Badiashile. Disasi. Fofana.
Sanchez.
Great content
I think Chelsea should use Reece James as the inverting full back due to his history as a midfielder, his vision and composure
Bro any manager can pick this video and stop enzo keep it up 😂
4-1-2-3 definitely and I'd love to see Mudryk behind a striker than playing on either left or right
The formation should be 4-1-2-3
Petrovic as GK, colwill and fofana as CB, Chilwell as LB, James as RB, caicedo as DM, enzo and Gallagher as AM, palmer as RW, mudryk/Sterling as LW and nkuku as CF
PLEASE can you do a video on guardiolas new shape - haven’t seen it touched on anywhere
He can’t do box to box & for drewsbury-hall palmer is the perfect 8/10 role not enzo. enzo can pass not score as well
Great video
I know you will be busy mate. But 1 will wait one more video about this season overachiever teams all in one video and what can we expect from them next season with European competition ( like Stuttgart, brest, Monaco, psv, Aston villa, benefica ) just some of them that you are attracted to.
Perfect formation, just invert Nkunkunand Jackson (how’s been really good at playing on the left wing) and we’re good
Interesting analysis.
I would rather Caicedo stay in the deep position while Fernandez pushes up front. Caicedo has a good passing range, I am not sure why the press often overlooks that.
I see Onana as a great gk for Chelsea.
Pre-season gives the coach time to see what works and what does not
Having great options in most positions is a positive not a negative. Every player will be learning how to play in his system.
The coach problem will be how to satisfy over flowing dressing room. The players are just too much for any right focusing coach to manage😢
I’ll only switch nkunku with Jackson and use petrovic at goal
Awesome video 👍
Your accent is so interesting - would you mind saying what regions and nationalities have influenced it? (I'm a big fan of accents and dialects.)😇
Not sure where he grew up but I recognize an italian accent when I hear one :D
How long did he take with leicester?🤔
Please can we get Hansi Flicks tactics or style of play he will be implementing at Barcelona, the pros and cons and also players who will benefit and whole lot. This is the 3rd time of asking
Chelsea are going to have a Tottenham start next season. My prediction is they will be top by Christmas, 8th by May
