I remember this tournament as I attended it,and the related events. The good old days! Kyokushinkai Karate is one of the best. Strongest and very effective. Saiko Shihan, his brother Shihan Y Oyama, Shihan Miuria, Shihandai Richard Wolicki, Senseis, Harry Kuhn, Mike Sponakis, Joe Aroudin,Tony Essyallane were all excellent. The demonstrations were very real and had something to say. This art is the real deal.
OSU! Thanks for the excellent upload! This is the video I saw many years ago that got me interested in Oyama Karate. I was eventually able to study back then under Sensei Sakai, who is now a Shihan.
OMG!!! Great watching. I've just heard stories about this. Soshu Is so young!!!! Trained with him for 7 years, he didn't sell he retired from actively running the organization. He teaches 2xs a week in NYC.
Back in 1996, 2 of us from Kyokushin (Shihan Fujiwara) went to the summer camp at Brodie Mountain and I remember Jose (world champion) and Patrick Gromieux (sorry if mispelled) I left in that year but I've been thinking of fighting again. I'm 36 but still I dream about knockdown tournaments. These styles never seem to leave your heart!
Maybe it appears different, but I was saying here are the two, Soshu and his SON PERFORMING TAMISHIWARI (Breaking) bats. Obviously Soshu appeared in the second clip at 1:23 in the sword demonstration
Loved Brodie Mountain. I started a year or two after. I moved to SO Florida 3 years ago and since there is no dojo near me I don't train as I would like but I totally understand. I did one tournament which i think some are on RUclips but not my fight. Boo! LOL I did Semi Knockdown but I was seriously thinking about doing tournaments again. And I'm 37. Sumer Camp was the best on Brodie of all was at Brodie...
These guys started out with karate because they were little children at the time and wanted to learn self-defense and karate schools were everywhere. There were far fewer jui jitsu schools back in those days especially in Canada and the United States. There were NO MMA academies, of course. Hence, they started with karate lessons, which were readily available, and later they switched to real stuff that works. GSP doesn't use karate to win his matches; he uses wrestling, jui jitsu, & kickboxing.
You should try to break one on you knee and one with your shin then I' ll respect your opinon. ( just conditioning the shin hurt aaaalot) My respec to those that do break bats with the shin, Usu!
Furthermore, anytime these guys "fight" they are completely choreographed/staged in advance using their students as "attackers". Look how those idiots take huge wide swings with their swords, setting themselves up for a kick or throw. Why not use wooden swords instead, covered with fresh red paint, then pick 2 people randomly from the crowd to be the attackers. Then he will get struck and everybody would see the blood red on his Gi. Give me a sword and let me come at him, I guarantee I'd cut him
If karate worked at all, you'd see at least a few karate guys win MMA tournaments; but you don't. The few who entered in the early 90's got the shit beat out of them. Everybody knows some kid who thought he knew karate in school, got challenged to a fight, and got the crap beat out of him. The people who watch & believe this stuff like watching fairy tales and like to imagine themselves as masters. They will always conveniently "show their greater courage in walking away from a real fight" lol.
Lyoto Machida, Stephen Thompson, Connor Mcgreggor, GSP, Frank Mir, and Bas Rutten are just a few of the very successful MMA fighters who have gone on to fighting in the UFC and even won championships, all of them have backgrounds in Karate and have used it effectively in the octagon.
@@DavidHernandez-dk1zs Well, I will say that karate has some benefits for learning how to manage distance and be evasive, if you go to a legit karate school. Lyoto Machida, Stephen Thompson and a few other guys carried the good range/distance management they picked up from their early years of karate into the UFC, but to be an effective fighter a person needs mixed martial arts and must add at least some wrestling and jiujitsu/sambo with it, and probably an inside striking skill (like boxing or Mua Thai, etc). Karate alone just isn't enough even for basic self-defense.
Karate is for suckers. All of these stunts are set-up. When he "breaks" the bat, he kicks it at the thinnest point (near the handle) with his shin from a running kick, while it's being strategically supported at its farthest points by two assistants. It's pure physics, even an untrained person can do that. When these guys breaks boards or ice, they are strategically placed apart so the force will carry through the first one and transfer to the second etc. Try doing it with NO SPACE between them
Muay Thai masters break baseball bats the same way as Karate masters to, yet no one bashes or talks crap about Muay Thai. I am willing to bet money that karate master could break your leg with a kick, you would probably break your own leg if you tried to kick a bat, even at it's thinnest part.
OSU.....!!!!! Trained at the Birmingham Dojo......nothing but respect......🙂
