Rose is what we in Sweden call a "dandelion child". She comes from a very dark place, had a rough childhood growing up in a cult and she left with absolutely nothing and became an independent, self supported woman very strong and caring. I admire her and her strength to carry on.
What a great phrase. In America we have one similar. Its "The rose that grew from concrete." The symbolism is very similar. That something so tiny, wild, delicate & beautiful can push it's way through something so barren & strong, finding a way to not only against all odds exist, but to survive & thrive. Yeah, other than this completely false allegation against Alexander Payne, I wonder what other complete fabrications and falsehoods exist in her book. If there was a movie Alexander Payne directed for Showtime prior to Rose allegedly meeting him at age 15, that means it would be 1988 or before since she was born in 1973. Therefore, there would be paystubs and IRS Tax Forms, and an accounting trail. I have worked on a couple movie sets, and it’s required, as it is for any job that includes payments for work. These would have to be under Alexander’s name, even if the movie wasn’t, as Rose claims. Plus, there would have been dozens of people who worked on the film crew, as well as editors and producers. All of these people would have to be silent. There wasn’t a production, obviously, because Showtime would have no reason to hide all this information, and a crew of people wouldn’t be silent. Some of these comments are insensitive, shallow, vile and willfully ignorant. Once again using the words "she needs help" or diminishing her violation/rape and pain to simply ridiculous personal politics in an attempt to make her seem crazy or somehow less legitimate is truly what's insane. She's already said on another show she used her money from Harvey W. to get therapy. I think instead of looking at her, seeing someone who may not be "behaving" how YOU might behave as a victim of that crime- YOU need to step out of that useless mindset and realize not all victims "behave" soft, weak and are sobbing in a corner for years. She is brave and she was telling this for 20 years. Some of you are only just now hearing about it! She had to go through many phases of grieving for her former self. How she grieves is her prerogative. She is entitled to act how she feels- that is her right. When we put limitations on how we believe someone "should" act as a victim- we only contribute to bullying other victims into silence. That kind of stigma is what keeps other victims silent. Some people here responding are the reason why rape victims fail to report. Because they feel shamed by not reacting the way some of you simpletons would. To reduce this devastating crime to personal politics shows how a few of you can't grasp that others don't behave as you would. Where is your sympathy, empathy? If you aren't part of the solution in identifying wrongdoings and trying to be progressive in your thoughts and making it easier for victims to come out- just be quiet- nobody needs your input.
Rose is, for the better or for worse is a lightning rod to bring out abusive predatory sexual behaviors to the forefront. For those who never lived a lifelong being abused as she did and so quick to judge on her wounded public behaviors, I wish they should slow down, put themselves in her shoes to imagine what would they or how would they behave in that circumstances. A little understanding and compassion for a wounded person would be much more helpful to the already highly fraught situation. When I was an awkward kid, and Rose (also a kid, i realize) seemed to have the world by the balls, I never would have believed that one day I would strongly identify with her. Or that this commonality of thought and experience and affect would be anything other than awesome. That it would in fact be excruciating, and a point of indictment. But I do think she's brilliant, and I think this interview is brilliant. And Ronan does a commendable job of both honoring and challenging his guest, and ensuring that she is not only heard, but understood.
Her affect reminds me of Judy Garland's. Judy's interviews were difficult for a different reason, but they were both victimized, and it ruled their lives. Funny and whip smart, both.

I love Rose! I know she might not like this but she was my favorite Charmed actress, and the fact that she is such an advocate for human rights means the world to me. As a pre-teen I was abused by my mother's boyfriend, and as I got older again by my bosses husband and classmates, I went through numerous issues that I tried to speak about but was always shut down about. I believe every bit of her saying it took 20 years to get where she is with her story. She exudes strength and rebelliousness that would’ve taken a long time to achieve. Yeah, other than this completely false allegation against Alexander Payne, I wonder what other complete fabrications and falsehoods exist in her book. If there was a movie Alexander Payne directed for Showtime prior to Rose allegedly meeting him at age 15, that means it would be 1988 or before since she was born in 1973. Therefore, there would be paystubs and IRS Tax Forms, and an accounting trail. I have worked on a couple movie sets, and it’s required, as it is for any job that includes payments for work. These would have to be under Alexander’s name, even if the movie wasn’t, as Rose claims. Plus, there would have been dozens of people who worked on the film crew, as well as editors and producers. All of these people would have to be silent. There wasn’t a production, obviously, because Showtime would have no reason to hide all this information, and a crew of people wouldn’t be silent. Plus, there would be accountants and pay stubs and tax forms, not to mention the movie itself. Where is all this evidence? She’s lying. When people are faced with the reality of this lie being exposed, why do they double-down, like Rose has?

A famous sociologist named Harold Garfinkel had the revolutionary idea to analize the norm by confronting it with crisis. No legal or moral rules should be broken, (since we have an exact protocol for these scenarios), but merely constitutive ones. He started simple: with a chess match. Before every move he exchanged his rooks. It's not a forbidden move, just an odd one. His oponent didn't know what to do with it. First he laughed, then he got annoyed and finally mad. Later, Harold Garfinkel went on to study gender, but not by watching women and men, who were born into it. He watched transgender (who, back then, weren't even called that yet). His sample was n=1, not quite representative... but he studied her (named Agnes) so thoroughly, that he revolutionized empirical sociology forever. Agnes had to figure out what seemed self-evident to most people: how to be one gender, rather than another. She had to abstract it from its essence and break it into pieces, such as expressions, gestures, vocal cords, fashion, behavioral patterns and so forth. It took her a long time and for quite a while she was slightly off. The nuances gave her away. She seemed more like a caricature of a woman than a "real" one, (whatever that is) and cis-gender people took offense in that. Georg Simmel, a historian and sociologist, didn't use the method of crisis-experiments, but he made similar observations for immigrants. They tried as hard as they could to immitate natives, but the nuances gave them away. Pierre Bourdieu found similar results for social climbers... So what do we do with these people? What can we take away from them? I believe, we have two choices: we can detect their deviances and doom them to failure, keep our system in tact and try as hard as we can to ignore them. Or we do what Harold Garfinkel would do: we exchange the norm for the crisis. To me Rose McGowan is just that. She is the perfect crisis-experiment for media: clapping slightly too close to her microphone, speaking over the interviewer whenever she feels her idea should be heard just the way it came to her, making grand gestures that are meant for the massive audience, but seem strange on a small screen, talking about feelings in terms of colours and sci-fi-analogies. Rose McGowan isn't trained in perfection. She's trained in survival. We can either see her as flawed, as a victim, as weak, as strange, as outrageous, as fucking weird. Or we see us that way: our need for perfection, for splendid performances, our fear of friction, our disgust in anger (particularly in women!), our blindness and numbness to the world as it is: inherently constructed by humans and therefore reconstructable. Rose McGowan reminds me of me, of how I would behave in front of a crowd, a camera, an audience, an interviewer... I'd be fucking weird and that's good, 'cause it means we're not sociopaths. Rose is cinéma vérité.
I have never seen her movies, I don’t watch much tv so I don’t know if her at all. She is my favorite person after hearing her speak about her life. She is real. I've never been that impressed with Ronan's journalism, but he excels as an interviewer. It's interesting how he's able to handle Rose: push her to explain her claims while still being respectful of her. I guess it wouldn't be possible if they didn't have a history.

Sorry, I don't feel the need to believe just because she made a claim. I've no doubt that there were girls who were legitimately raped, because of the casting couch. But they're the girls who decided that they weren't willing to do whatever was necessary and went home from Hollywood to live ordinary lives. Rose is what we in Sweden call a "dandelion child". She comes from a very dark place, had a rough childhood growing up in a cult and she left with absolutely nothing and became an independent, self supported woman very strong and caring. I admire her and her strength to carry on.
What a great phrase. In America we have one similar. Its "The rose that grew from concrete." The symbolism is very similar. That something so tiny, wild, delicate & beautiful can push it's way through something so barren & strong, finding a way to not only against all odds exist, but to survive & thrive. Yeah, other than this completely false allegation against Alexander Payne, I wonder what other complete fabrications and falsehoods exist in her book. If there was a movie Alexander Payne directed for Showtime prior to Rose allegedly meeting him at age 15, that means it would be 1988 or before since she was born in 1973. Therefore, there would be paystubs and IRS Tax Forms, and an accounting trail. I have worked on a couple movie sets, and it’s required, as it is for any job that includes payments for work. These would have to be under Alexander’s name, even if the movie wasn’t, as Rose claims. Plus, there would have been dozens of people who worked on the film crew, as well as editors and producers. All of these people would have to be silent. There wasn’t a production, obviously, because Showtime would have no reason to hide all this information, and a crew of people wouldn’t be silent. Plus, there would be accountants and pay stubs and tax forms, not to mention the movie itself. Where is all this evidence? She’s lying. When people are faced with the reality of this lie being exposed, why do they double-down, like Rose has?

Some of these comments are insensitive, shallow, vile and willfully ignorant. Once again using the words "she needs help" or diminishing her violation/rape and pain to simply ridiculous personal politics in an attempt to make her seem crazy or somehow less legitimate is truly what's insane. She's already said on another show she used her money from Harvey W. to get therapy. I think instead of looking at her, seeing someone who may not be "behaving" how YOU might behave as a victim of that crime- YOU need to step out of that useless mindset and realize not all victims "behave" soft, weak and are sobbing in a corner for years.
She is brave and she was telling this for 20 years. Some of you are only just now hearing about it! She had to go through many phases of grieving for her former self. How she grieves is her prerogative. She is entitled to act how she feels- that is her right. When we put limitations on how we believe someone "should" act as a victim- we only contribute to bullying other victims into silence. That kind of stigma is what keeps other victims silent.
Some people here responding are the reason why rape victims fail to report. Because they feel shamed by not reacting the way some of you simpletons would. To reduce this devastating crime to personal politics shows how a few of you can't grasp that others don't behave as you would. Where is your sympathy, empathy? If you aren't part of the solution in identifying wrongdoings and trying to be progressive in your thoughts and making it easier for victims to come out- just be quiet- nobody needs your input.

When I was an awkward kid, and Rose (also a kid, i realize) seemed to have the world by the balls, I never would have believed that one day I would strongly identify with her. Or that this commonality of thought and experience and affect would be anything other than awesome. That it would in fact be excruciating, and a point of indictment. But I do think she's brilliant, and I think this interview is brilliant. And Ronan does a commendable job of both honoring and challenging his guest, and ensuring that she is not only heard, but understood.
Her affect reminds me of Judy Garland's. Judy's interviews were difficult for a different reason, but they were both victimized, and it ruled their lives. Funny and whip smart, both.

Speaking as one of those minorities whom you're so keen to speak for, we've gone far beyond women's equality. Men have fallen behind in every single metric that's used to determine success and quality of life.

I love Rose! I know she might not like this but she was my favorite Charmed actress, and the fact that she is such an advocate for human rights means the world to me. As a pre-teen I was abused by my mother's boyfriend, and as I got older again by my bosses husband and classmates, I went through numerous issues that I tried to speak about but was always shut down about. I’m a female from Australia & I’ve long known about the sleazy corruption within Hollywood & the Elites for many years. Yeah, other than this completely false allegation against Alexander Payne, I wonder what other complete fabrications and falsehoods exist in her book. If there was a movie Alexander Payne directed for Showtime prior to Rose allegedly meeting him at age 15, that means it would be 1988 or before since she was born in 1973. Therefore, there would be paystubs and IRS Tax Forms, and an accounting trail. I have worked on a couple movie sets, and it’s required, as it is for any job that includes payments for work. These would have to be under Alexander’s name, even if the movie wasn’t, as Rose claims. Plus, there would have been dozens of people who worked on the film crew, as well as editors and producers. All of these people would have to be silent. There wasn’t a production, obviously, because Showtime would have no reason to hide all this information, and a crew of people wouldn’t be silent. Plus, there would be accountants and pay stubs and tax forms, not to mention the movie itself. Where is all this evidence? She’s lying. When people are faced with the reality of this lie being exposed, why do they double-down, like Rose has?

A famous sociologist named Harold Garfinkel had the revolutionary idea to analize the norm by confronting it with crisis. No legal or moral rules should be broken, (since we have an exact protocol for these scenarios), but merely constitutive ones. He started simple: with a chess match. Before every move he exchanged his rooks. It's not a forbidden move, just an odd one. His oponent didn't know what to do with it. First he laughed, then he got annoyed and finally mad. Later, Harold Garfinkel went on to study gender, but not by watching women and men, who were born into it. He watched transgender (who, back then, weren't even called that yet). His sample was n=1, not quite representative... but he studied her (named Agnes) so thoroughly, that he revolutionized empirical sociology forever. Agnes had to figure out what seemed self-evident to most people: how to be one gender, rather than another. She had to abstract it from its essence and break it into pieces, such as expressions, gestures, vocal cords, fashion, behavioral patterns and so forth. It took her a long time and for quite a while she was slightly off. The nuances gave her away. She seemed more like a caricature of a woman than a "real" one, (whatever that is) and cis-gender people took offense in that. Georg Simmel, a historian and sociologist, didn't use the method of crisis-experiments, but he made similar observations for immigrants. They tried as hard as they could to immitate natives, but the nuances gave them away. Pierre Bourdieu found similar results for social climbers... So what do we do with these people? What can we take away from them? I believe, we have two choices: we can detect their deviances and doom them to failure, keep our system in tact and try as hard as we can to ignore them. Or we do what Harold Garfinkel would do: we exchange the norm for the crisis.
To me Rose McGowan is just that. She is the perfect crisis-experiment for media: clapping slightly too close to her microphone, speaking over the interviewer whenever she feels her idea should be heard just the way it came to her, making grand gestures that are meant for the massive audience, but seem strange on a small screen, talking about feelings in terms of colours and sci-fi-analogies. Rose McGowan isn't trained in perfection. She's trained in survival. We can either see her as flawed, as a victim, as weak, as strange, as outrageous, as fucking weird. Or we see us that way: our need for perfection, for splendid performances, our fear of friction, our disgust in anger (particularly in women!), our blindness and numbness to the world as it is: inherently constructed by humans and therefore reconstructable. Rose McGowan reminds me of me, of how I would behave in front of a crowd, a camera, an audience, an interviewer... I'd be fucking weird and that's good, 'cause it means we're not sociopaths. Rose is cinéma vérité.

Having gone through substance abuse myself, I know the stigmas there and PR use it to their sick advantage. But, I don't feel these comments were meant like that. I can't help but look at her and see a deeply wounded soul surviving through medication, whether legal/illegal. I can't land on whether it's just mental exhaustion or from self medicating. But something is off. An I understand why, and some comments are people just trying to work it out. It's human. I've never been that impressed with Ronan's journalism, but he excels as an interviewer. It's interesting how he's able to handle Rose: push her to explain her claims while still being respectful of her. I guess it wouldn't be possible if they didn't have a history.
