- In her first TV interview, Harvey Weinstein's former assistant, Zelda Perkins, speaks out on why she wants gagging laws to be changed, and why she has broken her non-disclosure agreement two decades after signing it
A former assistant to Harvey Weinstein, who accused him of attempting to rape a colleague 19 years ago, has called for a change to UK law on gagging orders.
Zelda Perkins worked for Weinstein's Miramax Films in the UK in the 1990s. She left after a co-worker said he'd tried to rape her, which he denied.
Ms Perkins told BBC Newsnight she tried to expose his behaviour but was told by lawyers she "didn't have a chance".
She signed a non-disclosure agreement but said the process was "immoral".
Ms Perkins was 24 when she signed the confidentiality agreement in 1998, which prevented her from speaking to anyone about the alleged sexual assault.
She's now broken her 19 years of silence - and the terms of her non-disclosure agreement - by speaking publicly about the movie mogul's mistreatment of women.

Actually, an NDA is illegal if it aids in covering up criminal activity. They're not worth the paper they are written on, and I guarantee you that if anyone tries to sue her over the NDA agreement a judge will dismiss the case based on that issue alone.

She was 23 not 33, so her view would have been she did complain to her boss! Her boss protested him and her lawyers (in her mind: the law) told her that's the only way. There was no internet to see what other options has she got. Even now, even if she did go to the police, it would have been his word against hers, and he was very famous! It was good she even went to him rather than not talk about it at all. I am not at all against looking at this from two points of view, but at least be realistic about a situation in the eyes of a 23 year old.

When I was 19 and acting, I had a well-known female agent who promised parts and interviews with Hollywood execs who would give me parts in films and tv. I started to be very suspicious when one of tv's top execs told me in his office interview that I could be a sex symbol. After that, the agent wanted me to go to partys where I could meet important people. I was living with my mother and grandmother who said that in no way would I be going to these partys. When I told the agent, "no partys" she yelled at me and said she would not represent me. Thank God for my family. Nineteen was an innocent time for me and I was vulnerable. Hollywood has destroyed many young lives, both female and male. They will never change.

But then I left that venture, due to unforeseen circumstances, wherein I was inappropriately propositioned by a couple of men (and a few women, too!). I am now studying towards a career in medicine. 🙄

Zelda Perkins is an unbelievably courageous person. I wish people of her character and caliber entered politics and represented us.
Or work with women who have been abused, she’d make a great psychologist after all the experiences she’s been through and witnessed, I’m glad she left the country and made a life for herself. I hope she’s happy today.

I am really impressed with this woman; Zelda Perkins. She is very intelligent and aware that this whole situation is NOT simple and it's not about money. Well done. Zelda lays out what the next steps must be--the laws must change and women must be allowed to talk about it. And I like the fact that Zelda requests being present at the first therapy session. It is depressing that things were suggested and never happened. Thank you for doing what you did, Zelda. And the corporation, Miramax, is culpable and COMPLICIT in this whole situation. Time to wake up and smell the coffee--Weinstein is a power and dominance addict. Interesting.

ano nymous Sounds to me like he was a classic predator and serial abuser who acted with impunity because those in power cooperated and facilitated his abuse of power. You should be upset with those people, not the powerless young women he dominated and mentally abused. You should be upset with Weinstein. But instead you blame the women who were abused. Just because he didn't rape his assistant doesn't mean he didn't abuse her as well. And what options did she have? As soon as she knew there was assault instead of just bad behavior, as she calls it (a 4 year old has bad behavior, btw)she did what she could and that involved forfeiting her career. People are always shocked that no one cares, or if they care, there's really no recourse. I read about certain countries where a woman needs 4 witnesses to prove rape, probably more than 4 if any are just women, and I thought, "What an awful situation, at least we here in the US-"; yeah, what about us here in the US? How are we doing when wealthy attractive young men are observed in the act of sexual assault or worse and yet they get light sentences and sympathy for the way one little (remember, folks, she's just a woman, maybe even in a short skirt) mistake shouldn't ruin their whole lives.
She didn't do jack shit. She confronted weinstein, quit her job, tried to sue him and informed his superiors. The victim specifically asked for Zelda not to do anything, so how do you think she would have reacted if Zelda had gone to the police over her wishes?
Good for her. She was only twenty when thus happened and had everyone including her own lawyers pushing back against her. They tried to break her down and ruined her career. She is constantly justifying herself in this interview, which she should not have to do. Harvey is a sick predator and the fact that people still blame the women after all that has been disclosed is what is wrong with society. Every time another woman revealed the sexual abuse, I was shocked. As I grew older, the one in five ratio changed to more like one in two. I’m so glad these women have spoken out. When I did, I became ostracized, doubted, questioned, and even called a liar when I went public and those I went to for help revealing the horrors denied ever having heard me.
I watch and help when I can, but I’m no longer needed because the victims are finally being heard.
I’m so glad to have lived to hear this brave lady’s recount with such profound retrospect obviously from a healthy point of herself.

I’m confused by the hostility in the comments shown toward this woman. Suggesting she’s simply complicit in Weinstein’s actions is laughable at best. People who think in black and white don’t see the full picture. Nobody is supporting Weinstein. I believe every accusation by the women, but we need to empower women to come forward at the time and press charges. We need to stop male abusers too, and the best way to do that is expose them, in the criminal courts, and in public.

What a brave young woman she was, just to go and interrupt him during a business meeting and confront him with what he had done. What an example of someone who knows what is right and is not afraid to point it out. Unfortunately, as she discovered, businesses don’t care about what is right or wrong. She stood up for the right thing. She Made him sign an agreement that he should go to therapy! Even if it never happened, that was enough to humiliate him. Hats off to her. My deepest respect.

Unfortunately the giants aren't falling. I have a friend going through exactly the same experience with a guy who has a rich family, she isn't interested in money at all so is fighting the good fight legally but the family with money are throwing every single hurdle they possibly can in the way in order to prolong, distract and in some cases cover evidence. It is absurd. They are effectively trying to tire her out till the point she potentially relents. Sadly this so often happens as people don't have the money or energy to dedicate to fighting something every moment of their life, it is all consuming. This is happening everywhere in every facet of western society. And I cant even comment on atrocities in third world or foreign countries. Its devastating just knowing it let alone I can imagine having to be part of it. Anyway, I think it is important we don't give up - but as women we still have ALOT of fighting to do. and Men need to join in this fight and be with us till it is no longer a fight.

Beyda Bucak basically it’s about a famous guy whose best friends were small boys. They would stay with him without their parents and sleep in his bed.
He built his home around entertaining children. Even with a theme park in the grounds.
Over the years some of the children accused him of abusing them and he paid them off.
1 or 2 cases ended up in court without enough evidence to convince a jury.
People have the cheek to say he was a peodophile. I just don’t know what would make them think that.
