Looks great!! $25 was a steal and now you have one of the variations of mum defacing likely a chisel I'd guess. Thats a whole crazy thing itself the Mum defacing, not a lot of documentation on it and a whole lot of opinions
Nice find! Rust is no problem. First degrease the metal. Then boil all the metal parts in water for about 45 minutes. This will convert the red oxide to a black oxide. Then just card the rust off with 0000 degreased steel wool. Doing this should remove the rust and reveal the original finish underneath. Great find and good luck!
The firing pin alone is worth a benji. The steel is not substandard as some opine, it is a good rifle. Rear sight is standard for carcano, the .first rifle to go short and have sights focused on real world practicality and untrained troops. I have a rifle like that, later war do not have a chrome barrel but it is well made, nonetheless. I made the mistake of listening to the Arisaka critics when they were under 1.5 Benji and didn’t snap them up. Now that I know Arisaka critics are FOS, it’s too late to get a good one cheaply.
Type 99s are majorly underated. The early ones i consider superior to k98ks. The late ones im not sure if they are that good. I guess i will see how this one shoots

All it took was a wire brush and some oil and it came right off
