      I'm constantly seeking places to play outside because it's so natural. The sound carries and people are drawn to it. YES. They approach me to say how lovely it sounds. Really it's a Pied Piper event. I'm totally serious about that... people come over to me. Sometimes I give them an Irish reel or jig to make the journey worth the climb.

    So I went and bought me a low D whistle, and every so often, as I am just twiddling around playing random strings of notes, I will hit a sequence that triggers the memory of a song, which I will then try and figure out how to actually play. This is one of the songs that I have done that with, and I actually have the exact same notes for the first 2 1/2 sections (that is as far as I got.) I am rather proud of myself for getting the notes correct!

      @@andynonymous6769 You stop caring what the people around you think, and you make sure not to practice at an hour when everyone's trying to sleep. Lolz
      In all seriousness, don't start by trying to learn something hard. If you're learning the tin whistle, begin by learning to play the first octave scale, then try to get half the second octave scale. Finally, go for the full 2 octaves Although it isn't recommended, tonguing (breaking the airflow with your tongue with either a d or g motion) can sometimes help in getting the higher notes at first. Once you gain more confidence with the instrument, begin to work on pieces which stay mostly in the first octave. Then move on to harder pieces. It shouldn't take you more than a month to gain some proficiency with the instrument, but if it does, don't worry about it.
      What whistle do you have? The Clark(e?) Sweetone is one of the best for beginners.
      Also, the vast majority of people do understand that all musicians are likely to have trouble when they first start out.

    I know I am but late to this video, but I wanted to express my appreciation for your efforts to encourage beginners. My wife bought me a Clarke Tin Whistle in D for Christmas and I've only just recently managed to find both the time and drive to give it a go. Seeing results, no matter how small, hearing the basics of the song under all the squeaking and missed notes is encouragement enough to keep me going, and when I manage the first section of the song adequately I feel a surge of excitement that I never have with any other instrument.
    I think it's the relative ease with which the instrument can be picked up, combined with the promise of endless complexity that comes with experience that appeals to me. So again, thank you for providing all of us beginners with places to start in your various videos that are not just nursery rhymes.

    Trying the Tin whistle (as I am doing so well with the descant recorder).
    I got myself a C Clarke tin whistle to begin with which had a wooden block mouthpiece, and I almost gave up because it needs so much puff/breath.
    Then found your tutorials. Per your recommendations I've got myself a D Sweet tone and wow what a difference. I can play. hahahahaha. Then tried this tutorial.
    I am lucky I have deaf neighbours one side and the other side, well, they haven't yelled at me yet for the noise. (I'm struggling to get that top 2 finger note but hey, we all start somewhere .... right.....
    Thanks.
    These Tutorials are brilliant. Thanks so much for taking your time out to create them, I can see they've taken a lot of time and work. And I know I'm not alone in appreciating it.

I have tried to learn the tin whistle before from books and cd's but gave up after a while, mostly down to boredom of playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star for the 100th time ! I Thought I would have another go learning the tin whistle because of something to do during lock down. I have found these tutorials by far the easiest to follow, and the actual tunes are very entertaining to learn and really keeping me interested . I am more confident of succeeding this time. My biggest problem will be not to rush so I can get to the next tune !

    • @petej6609
      @petej6609 4 года назад

      @@wolfheart86 hey. Possibly difficult. As The native flute can only be played in one octave so you wont have the variation as the tin whistle gives you. Realistically you'll only be able to play part be in the above video. Unless you use flutes in different keys for different parts of the song. But even then I feel it'll still sound a bit disjointed and crap. I advise learning the notes of part be. Get comfortable with it. Then maybe play around with it a bit. Let me know how you get on. 😊

    This is the basic. To take it onwards, learn to slur your tonguing, rolling the wave off the side of your tongue, so notes become less distinct and more of a flow. Another trick, easier on the low whistle this was written for, is to learn to slide between notes by slowly opening or closing the hole, as you go from one note to the semitone and then onwards to the next. It's easy to hit unwanted harmonics that way, so do it without any push.
    I'm in the happy position to have explored these techniques with Paddy Moloney soon after Dixons launched the lows, back in the mid-80s.
