Spike Nasmyth is an F-4 Phantom pilot and was on a bombing run when he and his radar intercept officer were shot down in the Vietnam war. They were POWs for six years. Salute to this man!
What a fantastic adventure, Spike. Thanks so much for taking us along for the ride! After the eruption, so many of us wanted to see what was left, and thanks to you - we could. Lovely footage from a brave fella!
That was awesome. You're a great pilot, you managed to land in the crater of that volcano. I've never seen anyone did that. So cool. I hope one day I'd be able to do that. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for a wonderful tour. I hike in Mt Pinatubo myself. However, like any other there are absolutely rules and regulations in navigation and aviation. This area is suppose to be a no fly zone. In doing so, this will encourage other brave one like you to just come in the Philippines and disregard the rules and regulations we have. This is one of the reasons why President Duterte wanted to change the Foreign Policy. Foreign people come to the Philippines and think they can do whatever they wanted int the Philippines. This area is suppose to be a sacred area for the Pampangenios. It took 500 years before this Volcano erupted again. It is too close to the heart of millions of Filipino People. I will take you to what others think of this video. Thank you Sir.
Maria! Please do your research and check your facts! There are legal sight seeing trips that fly over the crater and around the mountain. Tour groups drive in and walk down to the crater. The mountain is reverend by the Aeta people not the Pampangenios you refer too. Yes I know this area well so please do your home work and do not this foreigner have to educate you again!
Believe it was the foreigners who literally saved your ass by predicting the eruption in the first place! Saving hundreds of thousand lives! Maybe they ought to get a little bit of that reverance you are handing out! My how soon we all forget!
Good luck with your new president, Duterte. The only World leader I can think of who's worse is Kim Jong. Looks you'll be heading backwards now while the rest of the World continues to advance.
Hi there . Was at your flying club on the weekend thanks to Cal , with my family. We had a wonderful day and adventure . Bloody ripper of a video. Inspirational. Well done . David Warne .
This is really nice footage. I have been myself there to last year in November, but took the 'hike' of 2,5 hours and the hour with the 4x4. That is what it takes to walk to the central crater, from where these people took that photo. A bit pity you did not came close to that area because the Filipino's made it into a very nice gathering place with some shops and relaxing spot, view points and all is very tidy and nice up there. But you had also very nice weather. LOL, landing in the crating not knowing it's illegal or not. Well, boats are in there too, so I don't think it's illegal, as long you don't drop your waste or litter into the lake.
Took a jeepney to Taal from Manila back in Jan. '85. It was beautiful. May I suggest that you video a flight over it .... maybe a landing there too. I think Lake Taal is bigger than Lake Pinatubo. And thanks for making the video.
Super great, Spike, thanks for sharing; this is truly a phenomenal place to visit. I hiked it up, all 25 km, from Sta. Juliana and then swam to the Botolan exit and back. Stayed over night with an English fellow as his guide. That was before they had all the rules and fees to visit the place. Karl Welteke
I will never forget that day. It was a large part of my life during the events leading up to, during and after its eruption. I was aming the last to leave Clark in its after math.
Spike -- it was an honor to meet you back in January and have lunch with you, Kevin and Bob Hudson in Subic! I didn't realize you were so close to completing this flight. Fantastic GoPro coverage! Wishing you many more adventures...
What a gorgeous, gorgeous expedition. It is amazing that that crater did not exist before the eruption. It is like Crater Lake. Thank you so much! Cool, cool plane!!!!!!!!!!!! They don't have them in Seattle.
Spike, that's awesome! Glad to see you're still flying. This video is a little different than the flying you & I did in that Commander 500 a few years ago, before you took it to the Phillippines. I hope you're well. Life sure seems good!
What a great video landed in the middle of that volcano...thanks 4 sharing...this is a moment of a lifetime for you to experience this amazing mt pinatubo...keep up the adventure...greetings from 843 area code charleston south carolina
Happy to see Spike still doing amazing things.. having just read his incredible POW story, with unbelievable onion-stops laughs thrown in! ( book lent by friend Ian L. 👍👎fellow flyer past, now UK) One National Treasure if ever there was one!
this brings back memories. i was able to hike mt pinatubo back in '09 and i was allowed to swim in it too. the funny thing is, i think i ingested a small gulp of pinatubo water w/c obviously didn't agree w/ my stomach. needless to say, hiking back to the jump off point was hell haha
Spike great landing and video. How did you know that you had enough depth etc if it had never been done. Im not sure if its legal either but they should include it in the PI tourist attraction info. Beautiful buddy.
I was up there in March 2018, I went into the water about knee deep. I remember the guide was nervous about it because he said they don't want anyone or anything in the water anymore by order of the Governor or whatever LOL. I wonder what the deepest part is, I wanna scuba dive there.
I must go to see it. I live in the philippines and never been. One of the rivers where the pyroplastic flows followed. Is about 200yds from where i live. Great video
The 1991 eruption killed around 800 people, it’s the average figure I’ve seen on most sites describing the story of the eruption, most of them due to roof collapses from ash buildup, worsened by the rains of Typhoon Yunya mixing with the ash to form a heftier mix.
Great video! Thank you for coming here in the Philippines! If it's possible, can I use this for our film? Will give you proper credits. Thank you so much! Hoping for your immediate response. :)
I was a member of the 13thAAC.we move off Morotai to .ClarkField because the island was owned by Colgate-Palmolive- Peet . we had a Japanese International truck in our motor pool and were told to get rid of it .so another GI and I put in the volcano. did anyone ever see it?
Two things I love. Volcanoes and airplanes. Great video! Major Nasmyth. Thank you for your service. You are a true American hero and a great pilot. veterantributes.org/TributeDetail.php?recordID=28
When I read someone crashed and died flying a similar plane from Pampanga Flight Club. I thought about you and your video. The pilots name was Hogget. Did you know him?

As the Archer's mentioned, below, Spike was an F4 pilot who was shot down and captured in Vietnam. He's a true hero. And, what a great film.
Superb Spike. I was there just a month or so before you. What a surreal place. Hanx for posting this. Happy memories.

There's many of these crater lakes in many islands in the Philippines. Great work of Mother Earth.

Is this water acculumated due to rain water or something else?
Great video! Thank you for coming here in the Philippines! If it's possible, can I use this for our film? Will give you proper credits. Thank you so much! Hoping for your immediate response. :)
It is so hard to believe that thing was ejecting ash and pumice on that magnitude.
Great mission Spike!

Nice video! and amazing that the summit blew off...lol..that a lake could form. I assumed it was just a big crater hole there.
was that an actual mountain?
Is the lake inside the crater clean fresh water?
I get chills landing in that crater .....Lol
Great job! Thanks! Maybe time to add a few fish to that lake!
Thats a really beautiful area.
Hello! Can we use your video for our documentary show? Thanks!
Just curious if you knew what the acidity of the water was before you did this? If you didn’t know, this would be considered irresponsible piloting.
Great view!
Are those fresh waters?
good shit man good shit that was beautiful indeed
I’m like swimming on taal volcano and mt rizal 😂😂😂
omg😱😱😱😱 that was scary...your on the top of the volcano😵😵😵😱😱😱
