i remember seeing this story unfold real-time on twitter. it was so heartbreaking to see the numbers go up every time i refresh my timeline. i even saw clips of the actual rescue efforts... like, the bodies weren't moving at all but the responders didn't give up...
i hope the victims and their families soon get the justice that they deserve. 😔😔

So the obvious choice is not to go.

The people in charge of the coast or the lifeguards didn't save the children not because they don't want to but
simply because they can't
They never got the training cause they got the job through the backdoor (illegal way)
So they don't know how
So if they try save the children but fail to, they'll be the ones who'll be blamed
So they just choose not to save the children in order to save themselves from embarrassment
@@rafaelsmith5737 dont know why their payment matters when peoples lives are on the line. that is what they sign up for as the police. they dont deserve to be a police officer if doing nothing is the 'obvious choice' what the hell does that even mean. its literally their job. im not saying anything about the coast guard because you're not wrong about that part. its really the fault of the government for not accepting help from the countries that offered it because their own guard is not qualified.

I really want to hug that one officer who just stumbled upon the scene, that is something you cant mentally get over easily and not something you forget. I just hope he is okay.... I wish I could hug everyone who was in any way related or were part of this tragedy.
Being in another country and seeing all this happen in real time when videos were flooding the internet,tragedies being reported and not being able to do anything but pray for their safety and make more people aware of the situation,i remember it like it was yesterday,i was shaking reading and seeing the clips,that was so horrific and i can't even imagine how it felt being there,it gives me chills...
I just hope one day,the parents and loved one of the deceased and affected people gets the answers and i pray who lost thier lives,found peace and rest and People who were responsible for this be held responsible and punished.
Man I think anyone who was on twitter that day (people who follow Korean entertainment etc) had the same horrific experience of watching it unfold. I remember my tl being just full of people excited for halloween and getting to party in itaewon finally, then people just tweeting it’s getting pretty unsafe so everyone be careful, people also tweeting about reporting it the police how unsafe it was. Then it escalated into videos of the actual crowd surge and rescue efforts, then reports of how many died just increasing every 20 minutes. Watching it unfold was just so awful, it stuck with me since then.
Korea definitely needs to change just last month the country was host to the World Scout Jamboree to celebrate Boy and Girl Scouts from around the world which included 43,000 participants - mainly scouts aged 14-18 - gathered on 1 August for the 12-day event. Due to high temperatures at the time caused 400 cases of heat exhaustion in the first day. There was also a Covid-19 outbreak also spread to about 70 campers. On top of that a typhoon wiped out the camp site and ppl were saying the food was spoiled and what they had wasn't enough to feed so many got food poisoning also not enough bathrooms. Lastly, safety for the girls and women attending was lacking they felt unsafe. It was just a huge mess. I feel so bad you think the government would learn to be more prepared from past tragedies.

I went to Seoul and Itaewon in march this year. I went through that alleyway covered with post it notes and flowers. It was so incredibly strange to be there, knowing the scale of this tragedy
Itaewon was literally THE place to be on Halloween, everyone around the world came to celebrate there, especially before the pandemic it went viral and everyone was planning their next Halloween to be in Korea this is how big it was
My friend was in South Korea with her boyfriend for a vacation during that period. I remember seeing the news and all the raw footage of the aftermath. It was terrible. I remember texting my friend because I was so worried for her, that she might be caught up there since it was Halloween. I am thankful that she wasn't and she was safe but it was just pure chaos and shock. I was trembling just watching the news being updated every second. RIP to all the victims and my condolences to the families.
I was there, I have been in Korea since 2012 and been to many of Halloweens in itaewon… there are years with more people in Halloween, but there was police intervention for crowds, where alleys were dedicated to going up or down… I am so traumatized I have not been back to itaewon since this incident, almost a year on. I once went with my friend, but when we saw the alley from the distance, we told the taxi to take us to hongdae instead.. it is still so hard to go back.
i was on twitter and saw this unfolding. saw new updates every few minutes with a higher death count and it was so bad i feel like i stopped comprehending it and went numb. watching this video months later with all the details has me SOBBING.
Omg I've never been in a crowd surge but I know what it feels like to be yelling for help but no one hears you and the minutes take forever to pass by, it was a horrible experience and I was only 6 years old
It's a hard watch, I remember I was using Twitter when initial news and clips started showing up, it was devastating to see the number of deaths just increasing each time I checked it was just sadness, International people trying to get hold of a family member who went to Itaewon just to enjoy Halloween, TL was so panicked, a horrific day to remember and the very next day a Bridge in India broke and fell causing 100s of deaths as well and third day an attack was reported from Somalia adding more misery, those days were filled with negativity, I hope such things reduce in frequency to happen
I’ve been living in Korea for years and every one knows that if you want to celebrate Halloween, Itaewon is THE place to go. It has had a huge foreign population of residents, tourists, and restaurants/shops. Some restaurants used to give out candy to kids on Halloween too. I currently live outside of Seoul, but I have a lot of friends there, several of whom went to party in Itaewon that night. One of my friends, was in a different alley and didn’t know what was going on. Other people I knew, in chat groups, were really close, but not in the surge. They’re still traumatized a year later from seeing everything that happened.
I went to Itaewon several months after the tragedy and just the air of the area was incredibly somber. This year, they put out signs in Itaewon and another popular clubbing area, Hongdae, that festivities were not permitted.

Some of the clips I accidentally saw on twitter that night still haunt me, I can not even imagine what it is like for the people who survived. Just utterly horrific that this was allowed to happen. I completely blame the police. Not even having basic crowd control measures in place is completely unjustifiable.
I remember this incident happening live on my twitter feed and it triggered some of my own traumatic experiences with crowds.
I remember being in a crowd surge like situation once at a school and getting crushed by senior students on a staircase.
It's one of the scariest things I've been through as a kid and I remember being completely breathless and screaming don't push don't push at the other kids.
By the end of i was crying and just shocked when the people around me just kept going like nothing happened.
I just have terrible anxiety when I see too many people in hallways and staircases.
This is the first time I've heard of the full details of the tragedy. All I knew was that there was a lot of people that died in a huge halloween event in South Korea and that there were mostly speculations so I didn't really took interest in it yet since I prefer some facts than conspiracies. But oh my gawd this was painful to hear. That must've been an extremely scary experience. I can't imagine the grief of the families and the friends of the people that passed away.
I was there for the bts Busan concert and had wanted to stay for this event. Fortunately I had to head back to the states just a few days before this event. I cried for the people when I heard what happened.
This is so heartbreaking. I remember being on twitter that day and seeing some of the tweets from people who were there. I vividly remember a tweet that literally just said "#itaewon be careful!" and it was a video of the alley taken from across the street zoomed in and it looked horrifying to me with how crowded it was and not one cop in sight for crowd control. And then more and more tweets and footage came out as it became dire. It was a lot and honestly I probably saw some of the awful footage she was talking about of people just filming while clothes were being cut away but I don't recall. Just remember seeing desperate attempts at cpr and futile efforts to pull lifeless people out of the pileup. This is my first time hearing some of the personal stories of the aftermath and I'm just so sad and angry for the victims and their families. They certainly deserve a better response from authorities and hope despite all their attempts to avoid taking responsibility, they at the very least make better plans to prevent this from happening again.
I was online when this happened and saw a lot real time and it was such an awful and again preventable tragedy. Corruption is killing people.
This story always makes me cry. No matter how many times i watch it or hear about it. This will always be a great loss of so many lives.
When I was younger, I often went to techno parades (a crowd of 200K+ dancing in a procession through a different city every year). One year, the host city didn't want crowds on its main boulevards. .. Except that in Europe, the other streets are narrow.
At a T-junction, I felt my feet take off. Pressure. The panic. A few minutes ? A few seconds ? I do not remember. Just the impression of a powerful wave that carries me without warning to move me further. People look at each other, we realize that we have escaped something. Things are jamming behind us, we move forward, the wave frees the people following.
Just a moment and it was scary for me. So I'm probably crying now.

I remember when I was at school had a assembly and at the end all the kids rushed to ran out from the school main hall we squished into one-other and I fell and no one helped me to get up. Someone stepped on my head. Oh my god, I cried so much that day that I thought I was going to die. Oh, I can't even imagine a situation like this.
I was not in Korea or a Korean but I witnessed this happening real time through sns/media and it was horrific! This video didn't even include actual footage of the crowd surge happening and the very graphic toppling of people and rescue attempts after (both the pulling from the pile and CPR). Seeing those at the time was equal parts scary and devastating.
Side note: please don't apologize if you have to pause or even think that pausing interrupts the flow or something. It's actually much better when you pause and talk than when you talk simultaneously with the video. Especially with BTS videos, please. Respectfully, it'd be better if you don't talk over them or the music.

I live in South Korea, this was really difficult to handle. My friends were there and thankfully safe but saw it all happening. I was on a video call with them and it was horrific.

This whole situation was just heartbreaking and I heard how nobody was listening to the cop guy who was yelling to prevent more people from coming. Just made me realize how police and serious professional uniforms should be banned from being used on Halloween as people wouldn’t mistake them for costumes etc.
I think South Korea, even though a first-world country, is NOT prepared to any calamities. Just look at sewol ferry and this. Such unprofessional and irresponsible leaders and officials. Sacrificing people lives and all. 😢😢
I heard about this situation on the news but I didn’t know what it was about, until this video. Its a sad situation that should've never had happened. The only thing close to a crowd surge this size I felt is at an outdoor festival (Leeds Fest 2012) when Foo Fighters were headlining and I (at the time a strong 178-180cm, 17 year old woman) was swept away into the surge closer towards the front barriers.
When a crowd surge happens- even for only a moment- that sense of light-headedness, helplessness and panic comes so fast, your mentality cannot keep up. I spent a good 10-15 minutes desperately trying to return further back to where my friends were, and because it was so loud and hectic no-one could help me or moved away easily. I couldn't imagine what it'd be like to be much smaller and lighter, hell most probably.
I saw all this unfold on twitter like many others, and it felt like such a sense of helplessness and sorrow to see the updates fly in every hour or so. So many more outside of Korea also witnessed these deaths through video, photo and livestreams online causing further trauma that the Korean government couldn't deny or hush like they did the Sewol Ferry incident.

I was watching RUclips that night and people were uploading videos that were so hard to watch. Most have been taken down but at that time you could see people stuck and it was horrible. I had no idea what was happening. I’m in the US but because I watch so much Korean stuff all if that came up in my feed. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and was shocked how quick people stopped talking about it. Poor people, those tiny girls in costumes. Heartbreaking.

If you don't know how to correctly perform cpr, you probably shouldn't be doing it. I totally understand wanting to help, but if you don't know how to you could be doing a lot more damage than good and potentially killing the person you were trying to save. That's why you get trained on it. It was an all around bad situation. This is no judgment on anyone who tried to save anyone, just speaking truth.
