surfskate pump | teaching a beginner how to pump

  • Ming's first session with me. She was already able to generate speed by rotating her upper body, but she had most of her weight on her back foot, making her front foot dormant and therefore controlling direction with her back foot mostly.
    She is a fast learner with the drill and teaching her the surfskate pump movement is the best place to start for her. She will now slowly bring her practical game in par with her theory game. At the end of the session she was able to put more weight confidently on her front foot. She is progressing really fast.

    I used the thruster sytem2. Will it be used for playing on the ramp? Need to adjust the spring soft or hard?

    hi shane, I am a newbie on surfskate, just wondering if I could start practicing pumping with my regular skateboards, I have a penny board and a standard element skate board.
    Would you recommend adding the waterborne adapter to my element board or would you recommend getting an actual surfskate board. If so any brand/ model thats suitable for a beginner?

      It is not possible to reproduce the pumping motion on regular trucks.
      If you don't want to spend too much, waterborne adapter is the way to go.
      Or if you wanna get a surfskate, honestly just pick one that you like. You'll eventually adapt to any system.
      Wheelbase and length will depend on your stance width.

    question, every surfskate session i get these minor lower back soreness, is that a good indicator?

      Maybe it is an indicator that your are not using your knees enough and instead bending your back a bit too much to generate energy. Your back should be straight most of the time. If you watch surfers surf you will see what I am talking about.

      Is it muscular?
      Check your form, experiment with different degrees of knee flexion and hip flexion(like deadlift)
      It should not be lumbar flexion and extension. Or your lower back will be sore
