This airline situation is ridiculous. This is no different from leaving a child or a pet locked in a car. No air and no way to leave. This is criminal. Period.
Isn’t there a “law” stating passengers cannot be held on a plane longer than 3 hours for domestic and 4 hours for overseas flights? Someone needs to contact a lawyer for clarification and possibly a lawsuit, if they haven’t already done so! What they went through was cruel and in my opinion unconscionable!
The Las Vegas info, is simply unbelievable. As travelers, we have to be ready for the known, the anticipated, and the unimaginable. We know to take snacks, water, etc. However, even the most seasoned traveler might not have been ready for a four hour standstill in 111° temps. Thanks for the update ❤
Delta - no excuse. Either get the plane back to the gate or get a stairway up to the plane and get them off. You deserve to be sued big time for this. Even if no one died there will be lots of heat related injuries.
Let me get legalistic here. The airline was on a tarmac….not in the air. Not returning to the gate and disembarking was “false imprisonment”. Anyone in the criminal justice system knows that event is one to avoid at all costs. Second, this should constitute reckless endangerment charges against who ever denied disembarkation. Third….if there were children onboard, addition child protection laws were violated. Until passengers and the media aggressively pursue this through legislation and civil lawsuit….what has the airline to loose? Everyone of these passengers, and crew, need to begin a class action suit. There were real and severe consequences to this malfeasance by the airline.
Hi Don, We're on the pride in Kiel...we will not be heading to Dover for the foreseeable future. Parts had to be ordered and are on the way. We will be moving from the cruise terminal to a cargo terminal tonight around midnight and all remaining passengers onboard will not be allowed to leave the ship for the remainder of our stay in Kiel....also the port missed was Gothenburg, Sweden.
Does anyone hear Lawsuits coming Delta’s way? I would sure think so endangering the lives of trapped passengers in that way. Some people might have died, fortunately no one did - this time.
We were on the same flight (DL555 LAS-ATL) two weeks before when it was 101F in LAS. The AC did not work on the taxi out, it was hot and people were complaining. I don’t think this is an isolated incident. DL seems to have mtce pblms with their 757 fleet. P.S. It also took us 13 1/2 hrs to get ATL-LAS on a Delta 757 on the trip out due to a mtce divert to MEM!
We live in Henderson, Nevada next door to Las Vegas, Nevada and Harry Reid International Airport and I feel for the passengers on that plane. It’s been unusually hot this summer. I’m not 100% sure why this aircraft was delayed so long, but I can tell you that when it gets above 110+ here ATC requires further distances between planes. Hot air is less dense, something like that. Love the channel.
I know what you mean about no a/c until the plane starts. I used to fly between Dallas and Houston every week but fortunately never had a long delay. But it definitely gets hot. I can’t imagine why the crew didn’t offload passengers after an hour. Seems like common sense is very uncommon these days. And they tell us crews priority is supposed to be passenger safety-guess not!!
We just spent over 7 hours on a Delta flight from JFK to Atlanta. Yup...2 hour flight time, but 7 hours from boarding in JFK to deplaning at ATL. Boarded at 11 a.m. and sat on the runway for 2 1/2 hours before returning to the gate and waiting for another 2 hours. One passenger got confrontational and demanded to be let off. He voluntarily deplaned while we waited at the gate. Needless to say, this is how in-flight incidents start. Finally taxied back out and got into the air almost 5 hours late. OK, we got there safely, but c'mon...this is getting crazy. We didn't get off the plane until 6:15 p.m. Then connecting flight was delayed another 2 hours while they waited for those pilots to arrive on an inbound flight...chaos much? I will say the flight crews were professional and kept us informed. Remember, it isn't their idea to endure these delays. I'm sure this isn't any fun for flight crews either.
Which port in Switzerland did the Carnival Pride have to skip? You seem to be reporting more and more cruise ships going to Switzerland and I am curious of the route and which ports are becoming popular? Does it go to Zurichsee or Lake Lucerne? or all the way to the lake at Geneve? Did they build and underground canal from Germany down to Switzerland? 🙂 AIS now reports that the ship was moved from the western side of port starting at 21:10 UTC (23:10 local time) to a cruise dock on eastern side of bay and it took about 1 hour to do the move. The skip first pulled out backwards of port for quite some distance and then forwards to the new dock. Don't have enough access to know if it moved under its own power or not.
I was stuck in a plane on a runway for 4+ hours many years ago, and a portable air conditioning unit was brought out and attached to the plane. I wonder why something like that couldn't have been done.
Maybe they were already in use by other planes? Just a guess. I also suppose they don't keep many of those units around, though perhaps now they will order more of them. The whole thing stinks of lack of common sense on the part of the crew and the airport management.
I think once the door is closed and the plane pulls away from the terminal it counts as an on time departure. This happened once to on a flight for about an hour and not as hot. Also if it gets to hot planes can be grounded for high temperatures
So sad about the pride. We just cruised on the Pride from June 9-30 and no problems then. Vegas is horribly hot in late July. We can't even go outside until about midnight. I don't understand how this could have been allowed. So dangerous!
Sounds like bad management with Delta leaving those passengers on board that long. It's bad enough being stuck on the tarmac for 15 minutes, but 4 hours? I'd hate it. How to turn off people from flying!!! Thanks for your updates, Don. We hope we can get into Bar Harbor for our upcoming New England/Canada cruise starting on 9th September. Are you sure the Carnival Pride had to miss a Swiss port (they don't have any...it's land locked)...I think you must have meant Sweden.
I was supposed to be on Carnival Pride right now! Broke my ankle/had surgery and cancelled 2 weeks ago. Still in the fb group, it’s a mess!! Everyone getting conflicting info regarding per diems/reimbursements/carnival credit, waiting for updates, checking travel insurance, hotel price gouging in Dover, rail strikes from Dover to London. So crazy! Latest, anticipating Dover departure to complete last 1/2 of itinerary.
Don, Switzerland is surrounded by the Alps and is in the center of Europe. It’s not in the Baltic. Nor does it have any open-water ports. Except for lakes, it’s landlocked. I think the country you were talking about was Sweden, which is in the Baltic.
The Pride has had issues like this for years!! Way back in 2018 it was late for our boarding in Baltimore because it had to limp up the eastern seaboard due to a propulsion issues then!! I feel so sorry 😔 for those stuck over there in Europe!! Both on the ship and in hotels with the plans cancelled...
I would have been one of those people carried out on a stretcher-IF I hadn’t died. I cannot handle hot temperatures for any length of time (an hour at best) without getting ill. I am a “young” senior citizen-the older I get, the less able I am able to tolerate heat. I can see the lawsuits against Delta piling up already. This was just a common sense thing-an hour had passed with no relief in sight-those people should have been taken off the plane. All of the southwest U.S. is sweltering under these temps. The airlines had better put some protocols in place to prevent this from happening ever again. Flying just keeps getting worse and worse.
I think that was the ship that Cruise News Today was saying was going to stay in the port that they went to until the issue is fixed. And they have notified the passengers for the next cruise that their cruise is cancelled.
Clearly Carnival has problems. Fights aboard, drug issues, trip cancellations, breakdowns etc. Perhaps its worthwhile to consider MSC in the same price category.
Don, I am forced to tell you that you were wrong about the airplane and lack of a/c. Modern airliners have an Auxiliary Power Unit commonly referred to as the APC. The APC is a small jet engine located in the tail of the aircraft that provides power to the aircraft when there are no engines running. The APC provides lighting, a/c etc. The engines when running will provide the power to do the same. Why there was no a/c is a question to be asked of the flight crew. A/C should have been available either via the main engines or the APC.
Planes do have A/C on the ground that can be run from the engines or the APU (aux power unit) in the tail. It could of been off to save fuel, or not working. A four hour delay on the tarmac with A/C on may use enough fuel to require refueling before takeoff. At the gate the plane is usually powered off, so would not have A/C, so the only A/C in that case may be piped in from the terminal.
I can’t believe that from Delta! Shame on the pi,it’s allowing this ! The passengers should of said Open the cabin door now! I can’t imagine this ! I’m a nurse and I would of stop and said open the door now or t he people who die will be a lot worse than the heat! LAWSIUT! Big time!
Carnival's on-board customer service is horrible. 1 hour wait on day one and then had to go back because of the wrong sail pass at the cabin door. Then waited another 45 minutes. That was fun. They were training new reps onboard. Getting off was a breeze with passports. Non passports line was crazy long. Felt like I had a fast pass at Disney.
Update... Carnival Pride will arrive in Dover Monday morning for a revised 6 day itinerary. A big shout out to the amazing staff on the Pride who have been tirelessly working to get everyone back home safe and keep us B2B cruisers informed and entertained with special performances from great talent like Marcus Anthony and Donna Ramsdale.
Carnival refunded 100 % also 100% FCC. They also are comping passengers for meals , rooms and flight changes, for the ones in Dover. They are also covering flight changes for those stranded on the ship.
They are indeed covering but as a reimbursement, which, according to the Facebook group for the British isles cruise, is a huge or for some unattainable financial burden. It’s thought provoking.
A little off topic question, but if you book a cruise and the cruise line cancels your cruise should the cruise line also refund your travel insurance? Specifically if you book it through the cruise line or do you have to eat the cost of the insurance when the cruise line did the cancelling? If a cruise line says they will refund immediately and it takes 9 months is that “normal?”. What, if anything, can you do about it?
We spent a good length of time in "Hotlanta" sitting on the tarmac twice. Once for repairs - (they ended up putting us on a different plane), and once on the taxiway where we were like 30th in line. We realized how the city got its nickname! 😅
The problem with people stuck in an airplane is that if they let them back to the airport, after a certain amount of delay, they are eligible to compensation, but if they are stuck in the plane, it just count as a long flight and there is no compensation. The airlines will let people bake in a plane instead of paying compensation Greed is the culprit!

to be fair. The pilot and crew were also stuck in the same temperatures
the government allows it so the airlines are taking full advantage.

Also probable elder abuse. The airline had a duty of care and they were more than negligent.
