We were each expected to have two stories a day. The paper published six days a week. We covered seven counties in rural Kentucky. Now there are two reporters who are lucky get two stories a day and it publishes three days a week. I don’t expect it to be around much longer.

  • @BlastedKat
    @BlastedKat 5 месяцев назад +38

Ive seen this myself. I watched a community of volunteers build a well trained fire department from the ground up. Locals donated land, build the firehouses with their own money. They paid for their own training at fire academies. They took old worn out donated equipment and rebuild it with their own time and money. They worked up to getting the counties first state fire certification which permitted the first fire insurance to be issued in the county. All without one dime of help from the county commissioner. Once things were up and running the county jumped in, removed the leaders chosen to head each fire station and appoint their unqualified, dangerous idiot families and friends to run each station. Imagine a county commissioners son showing up as chief of the station and he couldn't put out a fire in a garbage can with a water hose telling you what to do at a house fire. It got so bad all five stations just drove all the fire trucks and tankers to the court house, locked the keys in the trucks and walked off. It took years, a county leveled special assessment tax on each home in the country, the loss of the counties fire certification and much loss of property before they got together something that remotely resembled a fire department. The county conducted themselves no different than a bunch of authoritarian thieves. Corruption at its finest.

But that's okay shortly after that their little do boys decided to show up at a house fire and go to blasting water without disconnecting the power meter to the house. Looked like a bunch of fish flopping on the ground. Lol That was 30 years ago, it's still a political crap show to this day. Let them eat cake.

The firefighters end up leaving because of the Insanity these politicians create for the firefighters. As a first responder (fire fighter/EMT), it's critical to have leaders who support and keep morale up. There are times when what we deal with is rough and there are very few people I can share what happens with. With my friends, I'll occasionally talk about something, but I NEVER discuss fatalities with my friends or family. 3 days ago I witnessed a guy blow his head off and I haven't slept more than a few minutes since. Last night, Christmas, I responded to an OD death, so I can't say anything to my family or friends because I know I'd be accused of ruining Christmas by being a "downer". I can't talk about the wreck I was in while on duty and almost died, because my family thinks I should quit. But you know who I CAN talk to? I can talk to my department Captains who will take the time to call and make sure that I'm ok. I can talk to my Lieutenants who support and make sure that I'm ok. It appears to me that by firing two valuable resources, the town council made a huge mistake. Fire departments are NOT like corporate America where it's easy to replace people. Our lives (and our sanity) depend on each other and it takes time to build trust and confidence in leadership. With almost the entire department resigning, it's obvious that the chief and assistant chief were well-liked and respected and I hope the town council of Odessa realizes what a huge mistake they made and will reconsider their decision. I hope they realize and understand that lives and property in their community are important and at stake.

It is indeed a rough job and my heart goes out to you for experiencing those things but also not having as many outlets as you might need to get it off your chest. My dad did it, volly, from 16 to the day he died, serving as Chief multiple times, including right before his passing. LODD, not be able to save kids, some of the stories were horrific and unless you’ve seen it, it’s difficult to understand what it does to the way you see the world. He had a dark sense of humor, no fear of death, and a big heart. He was also adamant about closed doors while sleeping, windows that we could get out of, CPR and first aid, and emergency drills. It absolutely is a community unto itself. When my brother, also a dedicated member, passed unexpectedly at home, everyone showed up, but maintained a distance, because they knew it was one of two people when they heard the address, and they wanted to be there for us whichever the case. The wakes for both outstripped our times by hours but we couldn’t turn people away. It can be a thankless job in the day to day but I was reminded then, how much of an impact one person can truly make in service and I thank you for yours.

At about 9k pop., my rural Kentucky town is fortunate to have always had a full time department, and it is highly valued. Our ambulance service serves the entire county and assists in surrounding counties. It is revenue from that service that allows us to be full time. We have equipment that VFDs around us can’t afford and assist them when needed, and they assist us at really big fires. I am proud that our city commission appreciates and respects the leadership in our fire and police departments. They are professional and deserve that. They did this in a small town in Newburgh Maine.
The town had run out the town’s food pantry because a con man from Texas sweet talked them into agreeing to his scam (before he ditched, with the town’s entire food supply. Shockers) and when they heard the town’s firefighters worked out a plan so the group that ran the food pantry could keep giving food, they pulled a similar move to fire the Fire Chief.
Several firefighters did the same resignation, but it didn’t have any effect (as they too were silenced) and eventually the food pantry just agreed to a devil deal by the fucker who moved into the church (food pantry used to be in a shed on that church’s lot)(he insisted they change their name to that of a chain of food pantries) and never even acknowledged the firefighters who gave up their jobs so they could keep feeding the town.
Pissed me off to no end that they took their sacrifice for granted so I quit. I don’t know how they’re doing now a days but the woman who naively ran it doesn’t talk about it at all anymore, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it shut down. I still have pictures from the last day we ran the food pantry. We weren’t in the way of anything, so it was just petty politics fucking everyone over.

Like everyone else, here in the comments: this is happening everywhere. All over the country. In my little town in Oklahoma that has several other towns in the county; there is only 2 volunteer EMTs and the firefighters are also who some of the city police and sheriff's are, so maybe 3 or 4 now, I think.
But it took 20 minutes for an ambulance to get to my wife's grandmother's house a few weeks ago, and we live four minutes from City Hall and the Fire/Police station. What if there was a shooting, multiple casualties, or a mother and her 3 kids got into a drunk driving accident? We wouldn't have been able to drive her to the hospital out of town with no oxygen, etc., we don't have the equipment to stabilize her, like it's insane. The city officials claim there's no money or funding; but the street dept, electric dept, water dept, all have newer employees; the utilities are outrageous, always rising, new fees, we can't drink the tap water, and they mayor says we're trying our hardest. Yet, they vote on things that the city and populace don't ever hear about until surprise - we're raising rates again.

I work in city government in Kentucky, and the state requires annual audits for most towns. Towns under a certain population every two years. If OK does the same, you should be able to get copies of those audits and see if there are any issues with how funds are being handled and exactly where the money is going. KY also requires public officials to fill out a form every year saying where their personal finances come from so the public can see if there are conflicts of interest. KY has a public records statute that requires the release of most records if requested by a member of the public, but it varies state to state. It’s worth checking there.

How can such a position be filled without a job ad being placed, round of interviews being conducted and the successful candidate being named openly.
    CORRUPTION.

The city council forgot the definition of "volunteer". Their next election should be interesting.

Fire the city council, it's questionable if you need them but you definitely need the firefighters.

Typical scenario where those on council put friends on board. Giving them top spots others have worked to achieve but who aren't allowed because they aren't part of the big plan of having 1 person in every leadership role who is on board with, and will back, whatever city council wants them too. So the fire department is just one example of them ousting the old way of doing things people and bringing in yes men on board with city council's next wave of restructuring and rebuilding. Probably to bring to the town outside investors, LLC companies who will buy up land and existing ownership of organizations like the EMT services, Fire, and roads and construction.
Watch. This city and town is trying to bring in outside investors. Which always means sudden new zoning laws, selling of land, roads, creeks, and river access, all to many times foreign LLC owned companies.

Politicians always know best. Seen it time after time. 4 year wonders have a grand new plan and dont consult the people actually doing the work who have been there for years. Only way to fix it is to vote them out.

Smelly story, too much I would want to know to have an opinion. Looks like a big station, what size town does it protect. A chief and 2 assistants not given a chance to compete for the full time chief post? I would not be going into anything dangerous as a fire with an unknown and uncertified boss. The new chief hadn't been around to shake hands or work a couple of drills with the engine crews? Yeah, I am missing too much information, but it looks like the town council dropped a bomb on their emergency responders. The kind of danger fire is, I would be resigning too. Especially as an unpaid, or suddenly unpaid volunteer dealing with an appointed relative who probably hasn't even had basic hose handling.
