😂 this video popped up on my feed, and I decided to watch. As soon as you said these are great to add to your scraps if you need to bulk up your stash, my husband walked in the room and said you don't need to bulk up your stash. Pfft on him. It's true I don't but I can watch and dream.
I've great success in expanding my stash by shopping thrift stores, garage sales and estate sales. Often quilt guilds sell scrap bags at a real reasonable price at their quilt shows. Another way I've collected scraps is an exchange at my local library. Acquiring scraps has turned into a hobby all its own.
Most of my sewing is for fashion dolls, so I need very little fabric to complete a project - scrap bags are great for me! I do get mine from the thrift store, and in my rural area, there are lots of quilters and a few factories, so I get some pretty interesting scraps. I think these would also be good to see if you like a certain brand's fabrics - if the prints are good, if the fabric is easy to work with, etc. Most of my crafting is with paper, and I am fortunate to have friends with the same hobby, and doing swaps with them is fun and inspiring - I feel challenged to make something beautiful out of every page they considered ugly lol. I think this would be great for fabric crafters as well - to arrange an exchange with others.
My local quilt shop has scrap bin that is sold by the pound. It is a great way to get little piece of fabric with animals for your houses. That's what i did when I made my house quilt but it did take a while to get so many different animals and things for the doors and windows. Happy hunting.
I tried Sewers Club stash builder box. Love them. You can choose style and color…many different options. Beautiful fat quarters and your first order is 15% off.
I love the fact that you are discerning in what you buy. I think too many people online are collecting fabric to flex. It's wasteful and I don't think it would be good for my mental health to have a reminder of so much money spent and so much to do. It makes hard work out of a relaxing pastime.
I bought a mystery batik bundle from Jordan Fabrics. Every one of those fabrics was beautiful! I was so happy! They are still in my stash waiting for the right project.
If you like mystery fabric, angela walters has a box on her site, quilting is my therapy, for 45, and they were 10 yards worth of fabric. Some pieces were a yard or half a yard. It was a really good value
MSQC End of Bolt boxes are nice. Kinda pricey, but for the amount of fabric you get - it's worth it. Some fabrics that I thought I'd never use became lining for a bunch of half zip pouches I made for Christmas. I used a very plainish (did gave geese on it) looking fabric as a backing for a couple bib I made yesterday after watching your bib tutorial. I don't normally sew scrappy, but these end of bolt boxes are great for sewing small projects.
Some local quilt shops have scrap bins in their clearance sections sold by the pound or by the bag -- if you can go in person then you can choose what you get. I'm in Las Vegas and kudos to every one of our quilt shops for donating the too small scraps for our guilds to stuff pet beds for shelters.
That was fun! I didn't even realize this stuff was available so I learned something new - nice that you can sample so many different fabrics - when I first started thinking of quilting I bought yards of each fabric because I was used to garment sewing - I don't know what I was thinking! I didn't figure out that you don't need a ton of each fabric when you are piecing something together...live and learn...
Have never bought scraps, because most of my stash is comprised of scraps already! But will definitely keep it in mind. The "don't especially love" fabrics can be cut into crumbs and made into a mosaic panel for a very nice large hot pad! By the way... I am loving the Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass background music!!! Thanks for the trip through the soundtrack of my teen years! 👍🏻
I ordered the Loralie scrap box once. It was pricey like $55 but it was a large box packed with scraps. Some items were full panels some were smaller pieces, I loved it and the material feels so nice.
Hi being a new quilter I didn’t really have a favorite designer, until I ordered a mystery scrap bag from SewYeah. There was such a verity of fabric this bag, I fell in love with Kaffe designs the color combos just make me smile. I recommend scrap bags if your not sure we’re your style is. Have a grad day and thanks for you video.
Sew Yeah Quilting sells mystery scrap bags quite often usually it’s $25 with five dollars for shipping. They have their regular online sales Tuesday nights and Saturday nights at 5 PM Pacific time. Someone bought one for me as a gift and I think I calculated nine or 10 yards but then I don’t think that was width of Fabric though . I did make a note of it somewhere.
I absolutely loved this video❤❤❤! I am am fairly new to your channel and appreciate all of your common sense advice and $ savviness approach. We recently moved into a new GORGEOUS apartment and our 2nd bedroom is big enough to house a home office and sewing room. Your use of an old dresser inspired me to do the same and mount my 72” desk top to it for my cutting table. My husband Chad mounted heavy duty wheels so it can be occasionally repositioned. Our cost in was $25 dresser & $14 wheels, I call that a score!! But, today you introduced me to some designers I wasn’t familiar with, thanks. I’ve already ordered a few. Keep up the great content and I’ll keep watching & liking to support you. (I also bought your little doll pattern from the first video I viewed, lovingly call them my little beans).
I ordered the Ruby Star scrap bag. I love all the prints it came with! Thank you for this video! I had no idea that was available. Most of my prints were from the darlings 2 collection.
I have ordered the Moda scrap bag a couple of times and wasn’t disappointed. My favorite part are the salvages so i can add to my salvage collection for that someday quilt project ❤. Thanks for this video. I’ve been pondering these other scrap bags.
Thank you for sharing, I ordered the Ruby Star scrap bag from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised. Since I'm a new quilter I used it to test blocks to see if the block was too complicated for me.
Some of the local quilt shops in my area offer scrap bags for purchase, luckily in clear bags so you get an idea of what you're getting. You can always make a few things with that one and pop them in your Etsy store?
That was fun. Good tips. I would love to see a scrap bag in my stocking. For your low volume fabric for the house quilt consider men's shirts. It would make good content.
For low volume, try the wrong side of fabric. I used the wrong side of a grey on white for low volume...the right side was just too dark. Worked out so well!
Wow, thank you! I’m a little new to sewing/quilting and didn’t even know you could buy scraps! I made a couple of the scrappy pumpkin coasters and found that my scrap box was definitely lacking, so the colors are a little … weird. Really enjoy your channel and patterns. ❤
I have tried the soda scrap bags(I got 2) but think I paid too much for a big proportion of selvedges. It seems to me that we are doing these companies a favor by buying cut off pieces that in the past went into the trash, so they should be pretty cheap.
I am so glad I found your channel yesterday. You are a wealth of information so I have been binge watching. My favorite projects so far are the oversize hot pads (which I plan to make several of for gifts this year) and the wonky house quilts. I'm gonna have to purchase some mystery scrap bags to get some little characters. The wonky house quilt is absolutely adorable. Thank you again for sharing.
i love the halloween one you didnt like lol Ive ordered from missouri star one time. I ordered10 mystery and gor really lucky they were all from the same line and coordinated so i was in heaven!
agree. Also not a formal quilter, but I make small projects (i.e. heart banners) that use small pieces. So, hey- it was a fun and inspiring morning vid. Keep it up 😊
I really like your houses. I'll have to check out your video on that for sure. So many fun scraps you received. I love all the bright colors. I actually like those whimsical witch hats.
I followed your advice and got the Ruby Star fabrics. So pretty! At the bottom of the fabric, a few had the words "Happy Birthday. You are Special." I am making a box of birthday surprises for my college aged daughter right now! I'm going to use the "you are special" strip in making a mug rug for her. It's going to be perfect (at least in my mind). :)
Just found your channel! I had the same experience with fqs. I won one of Kimberly which I loved so I ordered one and was disappointed and won’t do that again. You give great ideas here
I find fabric at my local thrift shop. A lot of it is new - or scraps of new fabric. Some are definitely NOT GOOD - but that goes with everything... I do a lot of "tries" as I'm not very good at sewing yet - so thrift store fabric is good enough for me.
I’ve ordered several mystery grab bags from Hancock’s of Paducah. I love surprises and it’s always fun. Only threw out one piece because it was just too weird (looked like a bunch of eyeballs😮) and wouldn’t you know it was the largest piece in the package, over a yard. Just type in “grab bag” and different choices come up. If you like scrappy quilts these will be your go-to.
Thanks for doing this. I have wondered about scrap bags. I also never heard of the designers you mentioned but have looked them up and bookmarked them. I'm a big Kaffe fan, and the Ruby star Society that should showed I really like. Thank you
This was interesting. I’ve never ordered scrap bags. But I wonder about maybe starting a scrap swap? I’ve got tons of scraps and I’m a very eclectic quilt maker…some folks stick to one thing, but I’m more apt to choose different things just for the art of the project.
The sew yeah brothers on Their sat night destash on you tube occasionally have scrap bags. Pieces range from about 3 inches to almost 1/2 yd. It's $40, but you get about 11 to 12 yards of fabric, so good deal. Love your idea of then critters / people in the doors
I love your little houses! As for the scrap bags - they would not be for me. Ironically, my favorite one is the witch hats that you hate so much, LOL. Besides that one, I only liked two others: the green apples with red leaves on the black background, and I got a glimpse of a frog fabric in the last batch that tickled my fancy. Hope you have fun with all your new scraps!
Jordan Fabrics has some nice scrap bags. I have also found Sew Yeah Quilting selling fabric online at a great discount. On Saturday nights on there RUclips channel at 5 pm PT they sell fabric for $6/yard. You talked about your mom having moved to town. Are you going to talk her into being on your channel?
I didn't know about these scrap bags.. the Ruby Star is my fave. Added to cart amd on its way.. love all your projects.. so inspired thanks for all you do!
I have so many fabrics, also a gazillion of scraps. Many years ago, at the high time of Ebay I used to have a little "store" online, there is still a lot of stuff left over - but I will use it! I am retired now, so I have more time! And I definitely LOVE scrap quilts- so there is much for me to do. Hubby always says that I will have to be 200 years old to be able to use them all! Actually, even the ugliest fabrics (in your case the Halloween one) can be used up- if it is only cut small enough! ;-))
I didn't know that you could order scrap bags. You could definitely make a quilt or project from the Ruby Star bag. The characters always pull me in as well. "Dear Stella" fabrics have adorable characters too.
First time viewer. I gave you a 👍! Thank you for sharing your scraps.🌺 I love your Amazon purchase. I've seen them before but, was a little unsure if I wanted to take that route. I did just order for the first time with FQS for a scrap bag and I must say I was very happy with all my pieces. Next time I plan on purchasing 2 bags. 😊
This was interesting, a little expensive for my budget as I am just a hobby sewer presently., but I love fabric, and have been collecting mostly from thrift shops, I got lucky recently as they had several big bags of scrapes for $6.00, I got 2, and one was great and the other not so great, and I did keep all most every piece. And then a few weeks later they had one bag left, and it was half price, so 3 dollars, and that bag was really nice. I guess it depends on one’s budget and how they will be using it! Happy sewing❤
I used to find fabric at thrift stores, but I never see it anymore! I mostly only have goodwills and I think they stopped stocking the fabric and patterns :-/
Just found your channel. I enjoyed the ideas you gave. I never knew about scrap bags. Not sure I would be willing to take a chance. I did love your houses, and I am looking forward to the video. I hope I don't miss it. I have ordered some fabric from TEMU, it is very good. I was hesitant to purchase, but the price is so good. I thought it might not be good material, but it is well worth the price you pay, and you can see what you are getting. they have small 3 1/2 inch squares, some 8 and 9 inch ones, and also some fat quarters. Check it out. How small does your things need to be for the windows. I have a lot of scraps From making I-spy quilts for grandchildren, and I would love to share if I knew what size you needed. I have subscribed to your channel. Keep making videos.
so funny because I LOVE that purple with the halloween hats! 🤣 Purple is my favorite and I love the halloween colors together! It's so interesting how's there are so many variations of color preferences out there.
Awesome! I somehow came across your video and I don't even sew. The information was so fascinating and interesting. I love your communication style. I am curious about what resources you know which offer mystery scrap bags of african/afrocentric prints? also, you mention etsy quite a lot. Are the mystery scrap bags readily available on amazon or is etsy the go-to place for mystery scrap bags? Thank you. 😊
Hi, welcome :) Etsy does have a lot of fabric scrap bags (including plenty of African prints!) and I like looking there when ordering a specific type of designer of fabric. These comments have some other suggestions on mystery bags in general, but Etsy is my go-to!
I ordered the Ruby Star scrap bag from Amazon, I got their Vessel line. Awful colors and designers not to mention the fabric was super thin. I returned it. So, be aware you may not always get what you think you will. Better luck next time😬. Thanks, I enjoy your videos!
In general I think the scrap bags are way overpriced! I did order one (I won’t say from where) and I was very disappointed! I got about 7 or 8 pieces of lime green fabric that were all about 3 inches wide and maybe 12 inches long. I got a piece of beige that had been unpicked from something. I got a purple piece and a few small prints that were so ugly! Never again! If it’s a designer fabric I just have to have I’d order a charm pack.
I really liked your advice stick to a fabric line you like. I ordered Liberty scraps from etsy and was disappointed because I like their vintage prints and did not receive that. So read descriptions really closely will help. Liberty is crazy expensive for me $37 a yard. So the scraps were a bit more economical, sadly if I am going to spend that much in the future I want to pick the fabrics. The other thing I tried are hand blocked fabrics from India, in fact I ordered more this morning from etsy. Just be sure you message the seller I thought I knew what I ordered last time but got lots of repeats that I wasnt expecting. Trying again will see how it goes. Its definitely an excercise in patients because of the long shipping times. Tha is for a great video
Love this video and all the scraps. Just wanted to let you know your address is visible when you show your receipt for that last bag. I don't know if you mind that or not but I know some people are bothered by that. Look forward to seeing some scrappy houses videos.
😂 this video popped up on my feed, and I decided to watch. As soon as you said these are great to add to your scraps if you need to bulk up your stash, my husband walked in the room and said you don't need to bulk up your stash. Pfft on him. It's true I don't but I can watch and dream.

I think you can’t go wrong with Jordan, they will not want to damage their excellent reputation with sending scrap….
I hv purchased scraps also from jordan fabrics. Ver pleased! But check often on their search, because they seem to go fast, and not too often.

Thank you! In all my years of sewing, I was not aware of the mystery scrap bags. I learn so much from your videos. Appreciate them all!
Fabric i dont love from bundles can make good bowl cozies, someone will like it.

I got a scrap bag fron Hancock’s in Pahducah, KY. They were strips jelly roll size which included selvage. So a bit less than jelly is usable
Hi being a new quilter I didn’t really have a favorite designer, until I ordered a mystery scrap bag from SewYeah. Can’t wait for the improv houses video! I have been debating about scrap bags and you convinced me to try.

@dcwatashi so nice to see you here. Since I found Sew Yeah, I usually have a package arriving soon and an invoice to pay. 😊🐰✂️
@@trishwinstead28 I will look for you during the live sale
Very nice video! I too am making little houses with critters in the doorways. It’s fun and keeps me on the lookout for the cute factor!! Happy sewing!
I really appreciate this video. I ordered 4 scrape bags of wool pieces from Green Fairy and love them and making a crazy quilt with them.
Awesome!
This was such a helpful video. You are always so thoughtful and organized in how you share information. Much appreciated. ❤
Glad it was helpful!
But, today you introduced me to some designers I wasn’t familiar with, thanks. I’ve already ordered a few. Keep up the great content and I’ll keep watching & liking to support you. (I also bought your little doll pattern from the first video I viewed, lovingly call them my little beans).
Thank you so much! And hooray for your new sewing space!
I ordered the Ruby Star scrap bag. I love all the prints it came with! Thank you for this video! I had no idea that was available. Most of my prints were from the darlings 2 collection.

That was fun. Good tips. I would love to see a scrap bag in my stocking. For your low volume fabric for the house quilt consider men's shirts. It would make good content.
Great idea!
Great idea to buy the scrap packs! I’ve already put a few in my Amazon cart 😉 Your houses look so adorable! Looking forward to that video!
For low volume, try the wrong side of fabric. I used the wrong side of a grey on white for low volume...the right side was just too dark. Worked out so well!
I always forgot about the mystery bags. I do the monthly fabric clubs. Its a way to get designer fabrics.
Wow, thank you! I’m a little new to sewing/quilting and didn’t even know you could buy scraps! I made a couple of the scrappy pumpkin coasters and found that my scrap box was definitely lacking, so the colors are a little … weird. Really enjoy your channel and patterns. ❤
Thanks for the ideas on scraps. I never would have thought of this.
I have tried the soda scrap bags(I got 2) but think I paid too much for a big proportion of selvedges. It seems to me that we are doing these companies a favor by buying cut off pieces that in the past went into the trash, so they should be pretty cheap.
That’s a good point!
I am so glad I found your channel yesterday. You are a wealth of information so I have been binge watching. Well I enjoyed this video. I’m not at all interested in ordering a scrap bag but looking at yours was fun! Thanks!
You are Special." It's going to be perfect (at least in my mind). :)
I'm in love with your house quilt. Yes the collecting is a challenge.
I bought an end-of-bolt box from Missouri Star when they had a sale on it. I received roughly 20 yards of fabric. Pretty good variety too.
I enjoy all the info you gave me today. Very helpful. Thanks 🎶💐💖
Just found your channel! I had the same experience with fqs. I won one of Kimberly which I loved so I ordered one and was disappointed and won’t do that again. You give great ideas here

I’m a mess of my favorite from Hancocks. Their mystery bags are fantastic for prints, Kauffman solids, white /off whites and batiks.
Thanks for doing this. I have wondered about scrap bags. I also never heard of the designers you mentioned but have looked them up and bookmarked them. I'm a big Kaffe fan, and the Ruby star Society that should showed I really like. Thank you
I would hang onto the Halloween print---I would use it to line an oven mitt or something where it won't show
Those houses are so cute. Can't wait to make some.
This was interesting. I’ve never ordered scrap bags. But I wonder about maybe starting a scrap swap? I’ve got tons of scraps and I’m a very eclectic quilt maker…some folks stick to one thing, but I’m more apt to choose different things just for the art of the project.

I'd to see how you store and organize all of your scraps
I buy a lot of mystery bags and the absolutely worse was Jordan Fabrics. My favorite is Moda!!
I love your little houses! As for the scrap bags - they would not be for me. Ironically, my favorite one is the witch hats that you hate so much, LOL.
Yes for sure! I told her we gotta give the people what they want 😁

That Halloween piece is so cute! I'm glad you showed us all the grab bags and explained the difference between them. Thanks
thank you so much for the information! Looking forward to your mason jar cozy!!!
I didn't know that you could order scrap bags. You could definitely make a quilt or project from the Ruby Star bag.
The characters always pull me in as well. "Dear Stella" fabrics have adorable characters too.
Ooh thanks, I'll look for Dear Stella!
Very cute improv houses!

If you sew a lot with your scraps, then use that purple one - it will be fine when cut up.
I never knew about scrap bags! Thank you!
Love your houses. I would trace characters from a coloring book onto a background fabric use fabric crayons or markers for the windows
What a great idea!
I ordered the Ruby Star scrap bag from Amazon, I got their Vessel line. Awful colors and designers not to mention the fabric was super thin. I returned it. So, be aware you may not always get what you think you will. Better luck next time😬. Thanks, I enjoy your videos!
Oh bummer!
Often your local quilt shop will also have scrap bags. I have found this to be very economical and suggest you try this out.
Great idea!!
omg i love the hats!
Thank you for this share, ive always wanted to try a scrap bag ..but …
In general I think the scrap bags are way overpriced!
I don’t like getting surprise fabric. I would rather pick what fabrics I want to work with.
Maybe instead, if you need small scraps, better off perhaps grabbing charm packs…
Oh, I want to do your houses! Super useful info. Thanks!
I loved the fabrics. I can’t even wait for the improv house tutorial. ❤
Quilted Twins has mystery bags, but they are SMALL pieces, like as in 5" or smaller.
Does the Halloween fabric look better from the back side?
Please tag me when you talk more about the scrappy houses. Thank you.
Thank you for this video.. wasnt sure about these scrap bags..🎉🎉
I get bags of scraps at my local thrift and my daughter finds me a lot in the Goodwill bins.
Would you consider the scrappy house project beginner, intermediate or advanced? I think it’s so cute, but I have never pieces a block together.
I think you should just give it a try 😉
Totally love the witch hats!
Fort Worth Fabric Studio has scrap bundles; $49.96 for 3lbs/8 yds.
I love the Halloween fabric! I will buy it from you!
Maker valley brand has Ispy bundles- saturated and LV
I love the Ruby star bag. The fat quarter shop was a huge disappointment for me also.
Another option is Jill Howarth for Riley Blake. She does beautiful designs of fairy tales and children's literature on her fabrics.
Thank you, I’ll check her out!
Love this video and all the scraps. Just wanted to let you know your address is visible when you show your receipt for that last bag. I don't know if you mind that or not but I know some people are bothered by that. Look forward to seeing some scrappy houses videos.
Shoot, I noticed and forgot to blur it out!
I’ve never had good luck with getting random scrap bags. So I have stopped buying them.
On the character blocks you showed to us...the fox character is so cute. Any chance you know what fabric that is?
Keepsake Quilting has great scrapbags.
New subbie. Lizzie Brewer recommended your channel. So glad she did. I really like your channel. Thanks.
Welcome! 🤗
Make a trick or treat bag!
SewYeah has a scrap bag also. I like that Halloween fabric. Lol
Just wondering where the wonky houses tutorial is that you said was coming out Friday, but I haven’t seen yet? Looking forward to it!
I think/hope I said “next week” 😅 It will be out toward the end of this week.
Ty!
