I was a mere 18 year old working in construction but earning extra shillings in the evenings as barman at a local pub. No car back then, I had to cycle like fury to get home for TOGWT on Tuesday nights. One night, I'd just got in the door and switched the TV on but missed Annie's intro so didn't catch the name of the angel who had just stepped up to the microphone and blew me (a Led Zep, Thin Lizzie, Ian Dury and Joe Jackson fan) clean away with both this and "Sports Car". I bought "Welcome to the Cruise" in my lunch hour, next day and have been an ardent fan, ever since. Ten years later, I married and raised children with a lass from London who looked more like Judy than Judy (and her name is even Judith). TOGWT has a LOT to answer for, LOL.
Brilliant story, pal! I got into her - metaphorically speaking! - when I "borrowed" a mate's Welcome To The Cruise cassette back in 1992, and no sooner had I heard the silky brilliance of the opening track...jeez, I fell in love with a new and improved songstress to add to my devotion to the incomparable Steely Dan!
@@daveshepherd1235 That opening track has gotta be one of the best introductions to a new artist, ever. I adore and still play all her stuff and each album has their own incomparable tracks. I'd be hard pressed to choose my favourite but it would likely be either WTTC or "I Am The Phoenix" which is an odd title because she never sings "I am the phoenix" but "I am the fire" (I wonder if she knows..... LOL). If someone held a gun to my head, I think I'd have to choose the Phoenix - if only for the hauntingly wonderful "You Were The Place" which, whenever I listen to it, stays stuck in my head for days. Thanks for responding (kinda feel sorry for you having missed all those years. I'd already had three kids before you even stumbled across her. But I'm guessing your probably a good bit younger than I so would have been a tad on the young side, when Jude first burst onto the scene and - sadly - was competing with the equally brilliant yet far more quirky, theatrical and TV performance friendly, Ms Kate Bush or Judie would likely have been a much bigger star, even, than she was. Not that she wasn't, anyway).
what an incredible singer. what a voice. and singing so effortlessly too. what a joy to bring me back to that day when her album came out and i would listen endlessly to soooo many of those wonderful tracks. this is one of the best on that album, imo. loved it from the first moment i heard it, and it is still a wonderful song. abbasolutely wonderful lyrics. 'fooooooooooooooool' this is a superb live version too. thanks for posting, love and peace to you and all, xxxxxxx
I'm a drummer and into bigband jazz, and grew up with Cleo Laine, Marion Montgomery, and other great names in jazz and had as a consequence little time for pop and rock singers. BUT! This beautiful woman stopped me in my tracks. Such a pure voice, and seemingly effortless technique. She was never truely appreciated unlike some lesser singers we could all name. Pure class.....❤
Ive been listening to her from day 1 and still doing so today during the pandemic. A wonderful performer, hugely underrated except by those who know and love her and her music. Judie, thanks for 40 amazing years, keep on rocking madam!
I have the Ritmo record and I adore it. And this song is star star star plus for me. Should have been a massive hit. Her voice is so full of emotion and meaning. I always get a powerful blast though, when i listen to the Ritmo record. I love that Nighthawks track. Black leather in the moonlight, and dont they look so good. Power to all the Judie Tzuke fans, we have the magic at our fingertips. Thank you Tench magic. xxxxxxxxx
What a voice this beauty has...what a fabulous track Ladies Night is - fell in love with it from the first time I heard it, probably thirty years ago! Thanks so much, Judie x x x
Beautiful song from an underrated singer.Good to see that she is still releasing albums and touring, and that her lovely voice sounds as good as ever on her recent albums.
Got to be one of my favourites of Judie's (there really are many!!!) A legendary, unmistakable voice from such a brilliant vocalist! Love love love her and all she does x x
Thanks for posting this. Fantastic voice, great records. Saw her in Chichester back then and she was so nervous.. she conquered a few hearts that night. Her voice is still so haunting today, full of that particular brand of English melancholy.
This Whistle test was the first time I'd seen Judy perform, this started it all for me.Still love Judie & still get to see her play whenever possible 👍
Amazing song sung by a totally underrated performer - Britain is full of fantastic singers that are truly underrated - Kiki Dee , Sam brown , David mcalmont fall into same category
I saw her perform an acoustic version of this song last month and her voice is still awesome. She also did wonderful acoustic versions of other songs from the first album: "Bring The Rain", "Welcome To The Cruise", "For You" and, of course, "Stay With Me 'Til Dawn".
Good effort Chris, keep dragging them out & posting! Great to look back at the old stuff. Takes me back to many happy memories, she wrote the soundtrack to my adolescence! Thank God she's still knocking out some great albums and still touring, and that I'm still here to enjoy it all!
Best ever Judie song. There was a radio 1 session from about the same time where she sang this even better. I had it on cassette, gave me goosebumps every time I played it. Anyone got that to post?
Generally, I was indifferent to the late 70’s and early 80’s pop music scene. I’d switched off at punk rock and disco. Artists like Judie and Annie Haslam shone out like beacons at that time and restored my faith in the genre.
For those that havent got it, there's a DVD available of the Ritmo tour and she's at the height of her powers that night. Well worth getting yours paws on that, How do i feel is just amazing on it

My introduction to Judie, a mate said you have to listen to this, and threw me a cassette. 40 plus years later, still listening.
Fist saw Judie at the Colston hall in Bristol as support for Gallagher and Lyle been a fan ever since going to see her in Stroud tomorrow
Stay with me till dawn....dear Judith
It was a sad day when the old grey whistle test went away
This is the UK,s most under-rated female singer. Beautiful song and voice
Saw her last week singing a guest spot on a Rumer gig at the Union Chapel. Great to see her after all these years!

Saw her live in 1979 at the Caird Hall in Dundee, she opened for Gallagher and lyle I was 17 never forgot it. Memories
AHH , would have loved to see her on that tour ❤️
what an angelelic woman with a pure voice.

After "For You", my favourite JTz track. So much talent; being able to write the songs & then perform them with such a beautiful voice.
What a voice this beauty has...what a fabulous track Ladies Night is - fell in love with it from the first time I heard it, probably thirty years ago! Thanks so much, Judie x x x
i think this is her best ever song, and this is the only recording i can find. beautiful.

WOW ! 10,000 views !!! Brilliant.
@beguilingeyes Hi, I know about that one thanks. Didn't think the Ritmo tour was recorded !
A huge vocal talent, Judie appeared on the Old Grey Whistle Test, the only series the BBC got right, at least until Soft Cell.
@Bladestrummer you are welcome! She is on tour in March, and she is even better now!
Spine tingling.............
@seasider1962 I might have it on cassette. But converting that to digital media might be a problem. Maybe if I get a bit of time !
Englands finest singer bar none
Well, maybe bar Kate Bush.
Nice one Robert 😀
